“A WONDERFUL, WATERSIDE, WONDERLAND!”
Reviewed 7 September 2013 via mobile

My wife and I purchased a overnight stay from Groupon (at a discounted price) even though the original prices were well worth the stay. This beautiful place is a conglamorate of quaint shops, a mini-marina, a superb restaurant and lovely spacious rooms. All of this is family owned operated and maintained. We were greeted by the owner Mr Pack and his "SWEET" antique car. He was very nice and approachable. We went in our room and were stunned by a huge king sized bed accompanied by chocolate covered strawberries and champagne. All of the rooms have a comfortable balcony smack dab on the pagan river just over the marina. We sat there and enjoyed the sunset of a wonderful day. Our front desk associate "Donna" made reservations at the smithfield station restaurant. The food was superb and the hospitality of our waitress "Katrina" was sweet. The next day we ate a yummy complimentary breakfast. Then we went swimming in the pool. Next we went shopping at one of the shops adjoined called "Girl This", and had a great ice cream and cake the ice cream shop called Jeff's "Sir cakes a lot" so you see this is a great place to stay and do everything in one shot. Also, while your in the area check out downtown smithtown.

After all these years in Virginia we finally took the time to visit this charming town and stay at this wonderful property for 2 nights last weekend. Our room was spacious and had lovely cherry furnishings, pretty linens and was a comfortable sleep. The view was terrific and we were able to relax and enjoy a lovely dinner in the restaurant also.
"Main Street" offered lovely shops to visit and the Isle of Wight Museum was a great place to get information. On the way there and back to Richmond we visited other historic venues and simply had a pleasant trip on a holiday weekend with no traffic as we traveled the scenic route.
Highly recommend this gem of a town and property if you are seeking peace and quiet, a water view and some good eating.

Room Tip: We stayed in the inn section, nice rooms and very quiet. Great views of the water.

Good evening lakemates and thanks for the glowing review! I am so happy that you were able to join us on one of the last weekends of summer and visit this charming southern town. The scenic route (Route 10 East) is absolutely beautiful and, as stated, traffic free from Richmond! We are always happy to host folks that are looking for a relaxing getaway.

Thanks again,

I recently stayed at Smithfield Station after buying a deal on Travelzoo. It included champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, what's not to like about that? The resort is lovely, the staff was nice.We were given a beautifully appointed room off by ourselves, with a lovely view. The bathroom was beautiful and the bed was so nice you don't want to leave. We did have to make an appearance for breakfast a little earlier than I would have liked, but it was worth it! I would definitely recommend Smithfield Station for a romantic relaxing evening.

Checked in with our best friends for a couple only night...kids at home with sitter. We drove from Yorktown to Smithfield in well under an hour. Pulled up to the resort/hotel and checked in was pretty good. Nice lobby with the sweetest little row boat front and center. Check in and to our delight found the most beautiful waterfront room with little terrance to view the river. In our room was champs and chocolate cover strawberries. We enjoyed all the extras and then went to the restaurant for appys. Sat outside and enjoyed the view and our food. Went back to relax and change and back to the same table for dinner. We had the most amazing food!!! Oysters Rockerfeller to die for...crap dip...sprimp..steaks...We had it all and it was all so great! We had a blast with the staff...sitting out there and enjoying the great wine, food and company with an awesome sunset...doesnt get much better! Quiet cooling breeze and the river just below..was picture prefect...we will be back.
Smithfield Station is one heck of a secret....Go and you wont be disappointed!

Room Tip: Ask to see the lighthouse..we did ask to see the rooms after we checked in and in the future will bo...

Wonderful place for couples wanting to get away to spend some down time together. It was lovely. A nice boardwalk to stroll with nice shops.
We also enjoyed a nice dinner in the restaurant. Good service and good food. It was nice being able to walk from our room to the shops and to the restaurant. We were also in driving distance of Historical Smithfield.
Our time was peaceful. We will be back.

Room Tip: My husband looked online to see the different rooms to choose from. The back of our room faced the...

Smithfield Station is fully as picturesque as shown on its website, and the private balconies offer a terrific view of the water (not sure if that is the river, a bay, or what, but very attractive). However, the town does live up to its situation as home of the world's largest plant producing the ham and pork products for which Smithfield is famous, and the plant is but a few miles up the river. One morning when the air was still and the humidity high (apparently not at all unusual in that area), the atmosphere wafting across the water and surrounding the hotel can be very odiferous. I suspect even the most ardent ham-lovers would not be breathing that in with any kind of pleasure.

After a much hectic work week, we couldn’t wait to start our weekend getaway at Smithfield Station. On arrival, we were greeted by a nice staff at the reception. We had a discount coupon for a standard room, which in itself was quite nice and far above a typical hotel room: King bed, fireplace, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, small sitting area, etc. As promised in their brochure, the room came with a balcony where we watched the boats and the sun setting, on 2 comfortable Adirondack type chairs on our balcony, which were unfortunately stained with the souvenir leavings of the birds that had apparently been reposing on them some days before our arrival - not sure why the cleaning staff had overlooked this obvious issue.

The restaurant is equally picturesque, with great views from the large windows facing the Marina and water. Last reservation at their restaurant is at 8:00 pm (early for us after a long day of travel and touring and a late lunch but not impossible). However, if you want a romantic candlelight dinner for 2, this is not the place. I think we were the only ones in the restaurant actually dressed for a nice dinner. Family style casual is definitely the ticket, at least on a summer weekend, and be prepared for lots of children. Perhaps if the restaurant stayed open later, and reserved for couples seeking that quiet and intimate dinner setting, this would have been ideal. We have no problems dining with other large groups even with a very fussy baby, but the parents certainly tired and harassed; apparently we were not alone in our thoughts, as another older couple looked decidedly unhappy with the noise.
My husband had crab cakes which were quite nice, though they did not live up to the billing on their menu as world famous. The Sunday night special – prime rib - was another matter. The meat was dry and flavorless, the dishes arrived incorrectly, we had to ask for the Au Jus for the Prime Rib, the courses took a bit too long to be brought out even though the restaurant was by this time not at all crowded. We felt sorry for the waiter who obviously did not enjoy having to deal with the mistakes from the kitchen. On the way back to our room along the exterior boardwalk, we noticed a bottle of beer and a half empty wine glass on an outside table by the boardwalk, which we were very amused to see remained there all the next day and evening, and even the following morning at breakfast, which seemed symptomatic of the lack of attention to detail.

Did we enjoy our getaway? Yes, we certainly did. The location is superb for visiting the many tourist attractions in the Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown area, and to be away from the honky-tonk atmosphere of that triangle for accommodations. There are so many historical places to visit around that area, and we highly recommend visiting all of them, even if you do not go to Williamsburg (where we have visited several times already). But would we go back to Smithfield Station? Probably once is enough, though we would consider it if we could not find a more conventional B&B that offers rooms at similarly reasonable rates.

Good afternoon aerojet28,

Thank you so much for your review. You have pointed out some areas of concern that looks as if we need to address. As I have said many times before, it is our desire that no one leaves Smithfield Station anything less than delighted. Perhaps you caught us on an off day, as I promise our facility is not usually as described. While I can do nothing for the smell of ham in the air (it does happen sometimes, locals call it the smell of money to make it at least sound better) I can certainly address glassware not being picked up! Thank you for pointing out these areas that need improvement and we will do our best to get them addressed. Thanks again for your review and we hope to see you again.

Yours in Hospitality,
Randy Pack

This was the first stop that was part of his "birthday week-end staycation." We used the Travelzoo special (King room, champagne, chocolate covered strawberries). It was very much worth it. The hotel housekeeping staff were very professional and friendly. Being an environmental professional, I love the fact that the hotel has made great strides in being environmentally conscious. The location and atmosphere in great. Accommodations were nice, the room was large. I loved the large bathroom with the walk-in shower. Definitely not designed like the normal "hotel chain" bath. Two people could function in the bath at the same time. The linen was very luxurious and top of the line. I was not afraid to sleep on the sheets..... they had that "fresh out of the dryer" smell and feel. The toiletries were Bath and Body Works. We ate lunch in the bar. I did not feel like I had to cut my foot off when I mistakenly walked on the carpet without my slippers. The carpets were really clean. The food was good and the bartender told us about happy hour. Of course we went back to partake in happy hour libations. I wish there were more Northern VA happy hours like this one. Good food, inexpensive but great drinks, and great ambience. The owner was there and very friendly and engaging. The breakfast was an added plus. I loved the ham biscuits! The cereal and breakfast bars were Kashi. I definitely recommend this hotel. Only a short 2.5 hours from DC area and close to so many Tidewater attractions. We are coming back in the Fall (I am craving that country ham).

Room Tip: Get a room with a private balcony facing the waer. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Thanks for the review trvln_d_world! Did you also know we are a certified green hotel and restaurant by Virginia Green and recently won the Governors Award for Environmental Excellence? We pay attention to the environment that affords us our great views and natural beauty. While we don't advertise it often, we feel it is something we just SHOULD do. Thanks for noticing and for your kind words. We appreciate it. Look forward to seeing you this fall.
