“Authentic Small Town Country Inn”
Reviewed 30 January 2009

Modern comforts with period charm. An excellent value, this is the real deal -- an old inn on the main street of a small country town surrounded by rural delights. Sure, you may have to wait 5 minutes to check in, but it's worth it. The people who run the place are nice, and they're busy.

The sophisticated country ambiance of the dining room is reflected in the impressive menu. On a recent Sunday night in January, after a delicious dinner, I slept blissfully in the Monroe Room, unaware of any noises from the street, as did my travelling companion. There is perhaps more traffic on Saturday nights, but it is only sporadic.

While authentically quaint, this is not a frou-frou B & B. Although it is only a few minutes from the entrance to Skyline Drive (a national park), It is not entirely "out in the country" either, inasmuch as Stanardsville is the seat of government for Greene County (the smallest county in Virginia). Cell phone reception was excellent in our room, and there were 65 cable channels on the small TV. Some rooms have wireless Internet access.

As for minor complaints -- Our friends who were traveling with us could tune in only about 12 TV channels in the room next to ours, the Jefferson. (Twelve channels would have seemed fine, except that we had so many more.) They never noticed the hotel guide that was in their room on a shelf under the telephone. Maybe it could be more conspicuously placed in the room, with a cover that would be more immediately identifiable than the plain black one currently in use. Also, we found the complimentary champagne unpleasantly sweet. But it was a good idea. My one other quibble is with the ghostly photographs and the admittedly lifelike and amusing ghoulish butler statue on the stair landing. They weren't in evidence when we'd last stayed at the inn in March 2008, so I must assume that they appeared for Halloween -- when they would have been cute --and just stayed on. I find them a little out of place in January. Nevertheless our most recent experience at the Lafayette was wonderfully relaxing.

“5star at 3star prices--Romantic Getaway just outside Skyline Drive entrance”
Reviewed 10 December 2008

Beautiful 3 room Victorian suite at reasonable prices! Excellent creative chef at restaurant--had a creole dish, etouffee and my husband had filet, and cream soup in a heaping bread bowl, no room for dessert...we did see the couple next to us do the 10 dish tasting, and the food looked fantastic, but they couldn't go beyond #7. There was one error during dinner where they overcooked the med-rare filet to med-well, but they quickly and graciously replaced it and comped us appropriately--sign of good managing team. 2 fireplaces in room w great bedding; massage table near one fireplace in bathroom---yes, the bathroom (separate lil room for the actual toilet and another separate room for jacuzzi). Lots of nice small touches--such as the range of romantic CD's in the surround sound speakers in all 3 rooms; beautiful canopy over bed, did I mention the massage table that you can book in advance for a private masseuse or your partner for a massage; lil' bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us at check-in too.
Lots of near by activities: Full day at wineries--Barboursville within 10ish mi--great Italian wines---try the Octagon. On way home took the long route on skyline drive down to Charlottesville to go home to Richmond. Would recommend to friends and couples of all ages.

we stayed in the wilson room, the loft type room was very cool, although the steps were steep to get up. our room was very clean and cozy. the full size bed was comfortable and squeeky!
we had dinner at the inn it was very good. we also had breakfast before we left whitch was excellent also.

“Big Surprise in a Little Town”
Reviewed 7 October 2008

Lafayette Inn is a romantic, cozy inn with a friendly and very accomodating staff. Having returned from an area wedding where the food was inedible and finding the Lafayette kitchen closed, the owner was kind enough to make us delicious Chicken salad sandwiches on croissants with chips and even offered desserts! A complimentary bottle of wine started the weekend off right. We only wished the wedding had been as nice!
