Attraction details
Owner description: Located only 6 miles from Surry Courthouse and 15 miles from Colonial Williamsburg and Victorian Smithfield, the 1,947-acre Chippokes Plantation State Park invites visitors to explore thousands of years of natural and Native American and over 394 years of African and European American histories while basking on James River sun-kissed beaches, relaxing amidst nature and a roaring campfire, and visiting other regional attractions. In the same year Africans were first brought to Jamestown, in 1619 Captain William Powell was granted his patent for Chippokes Plantation. By 1626 Chippokes Plantation became a working farm and to this day remains an operational agricultural enterprise. Between April and October visitors may tour the 1854 Jones-Stewart Victorian Mansion and eight, beautifully-appointed exhibit rooms showcase how people decorated and lived in the years before the American Civil War. The Mansion hosts periodic Hearth Cooking Demonstrations at its detached Summer Kitchen. Please check for program details. During Summer months take guided walking tours of "Quarter Lane". Located adjacent to the 1816 Antebellum Riverhouse visitors follow in the footsteps of enslaved African Americans and their contributions to building America during this informative African-American Heritage Program. Please check for program details. Overnight guests may choose between four cabins and fifty water and electric campsites. Reservations are recommended.

Reviewed 19 August 2014

We spent a relaxing Sunday exploring the park. It's a very reasonable fee and there is plenty to see.

“Beautiful State Park”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We took a few days to camp at this state park and were pleasantly surprised. Since we were middle of the week in mid July, we had ample sites to choose from. The only negative is when you call Reserve America to reserve a campsite, they cannot guarantee you a specific site. You wonder why they even bother. We only wanted a pull thru site and there were plenty when we arrived at the park.
The campsite in Loop B was paved, long and level. The water and electric hook up was fine and the dump station was really easy to manage. The whole park was really lovely and perfectly maintained. They have a swimming pool but we did not go to look at it, so cannot comment. The town of Smithfield is really a lovely historic town and lots of shops and restaurants. Be sure to see the Isle of Wight Courthouse if you visit Smithfield.

“Loved this park and Matt, a park farm guide”
Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

We took the Jamestown ferry for the fun of it and ended up finding this park on Trip Advisor and we are so glad we did! Since we are in Williamsburg in our RV we checked out the camping area and found loop B to be spacious and well kept, we would definitely RV there. Then we drove to the farm area and found the animals and the very informative park ranger, Matt! It was time to take Taz, the pot bellied pig back to his pen so we got to pet the pig and learn all about Taz. The very best part is that we were able to have our small dog with us! The display of old farm equipment and household items was very interesting as well. It was a very worthwhile stop for a mere $4.00 parking fee!

“This is a great small town and park. Enjoyed better than Williamsburg. Much nicer people.”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

There is only 7500 in the whole county and all are nice. Park staff are so very nice. Everything was clean. The grounds are well take care. They need some more time work on the gardens but the staff and volunteer make up for the slightly over grown gardens. The story of the Stewards is great. Lots of history at this planation. Nice to walk the beach to. This is vacation all by its self.

“More Than A Farm”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This is a petting zoo, beach, farm, and museum all in one! There are donkeys and goats you are able to touch as well as chickens you are allowed to feed. The beach is gorgeous and perfect for any summer months! There is also a smaller beach where you can look for really cool shell and even shark teeth!! That was my highlight of the trip (I found 7 teeth!). There is also a small museum by the animals as well as a garden and some older houses on the land. Unfortunately a lot of them were closed when I went but I am looking forward to go back and see everything I missed the first time around.

I travel a lot around Virginia so check out my blog www.travelingva.wordpress.com for more reviews, photos, and plenty more traveling fun or follow me on twitter @Traveling_VA!!
