Owner description: Visit the Thoroughgood House to hear the great success story of Adam Thorowgood, one of Virginia's first colonists. Learn about the house Argall and Susannah Thorowgood built and what makes it so extraordinary. See the special touches added by John Thorowgood and tour the passage and parlor, furnished as they might have been when John lived there. Finally, follow the house in pictures up to the present and find out what-and how-we are continuing to learn about this historic treasure.

very nice for the locals. It's a bit quaint if you come from the DC area where we have a plethora of museums and historical houses.

“History at its Most Fun!”
Reviewed 12 December 2012

I love this historical landmark! It's so amazing to see such a well kept piece of our local history. The guides add a touch of whimsy in their period dress. For a small contribution it's a great few hours.

“First Brick Home Holds Up”
Reviewed 8 November 2012

Thought the Thoroughgood house is a bit of a distance from the beach, it is definitely woth the trip. It is supposedly the first brick home in America and is small but charming. Great effort has been made to preserve the building andit is regularly referred to in history texts, design magazines and historical publications.

“A taste of history in an otherwise beach-oriented community”
Reviewed 7 November 2012

Most attractions in Virginia Beach focus on, of course, the beach. Or the military. This venue is a nice taste of history, though. It's not Williamsburg (which is mostly fake, I hear), but it's a nice little stop. It's an unexpected plantation feel in the middle of a modern neighborhood. It's impressive how you can step back in time while in the midst of modern mansions hidden behind trees. The staff dresses up, the artifacts are authentic, and the wind in the trees makes you imagine how calm life could be in free hours four hundred years ago. A good history lesson for all!

Not wheelchair friendly if you want to see the second floor.
