The chef at Lager Heads, Beau Phipps, made an amazing meal for our food allergic son and we feel confident that he will continue to prepare not only safe meals but delicious ones for him to enjoy. I cannot express how invaluable his creative efforts and attention to detail are to our family. A special thanks to the GM, Stefano Reyes, for the time and effort he spent on our behalf (as well as the front desk manager, Daniella, and Mr. Mathias) in making arrangements with our insurance company for our stay as a result of being displaced due to water damage and mold in our home. In addition, Timothy Mullen, one of the maintenance crew, has taken care on several occasions to ensure our son's safety when we were already faced with trying circumstances. The breakfast crew, Christian and Julie in particular, made every effort to care for our needs and the friendly front desk staff made such stressful transition for my boys enjoyable. We are so grateful. The beautiful and clean room, great restaurant and breakfast buffet combined with the gorgeous beach and ocean view a delight. We would certainly recommend it to our friends.

Opened in the summer of 2014, the oceanfront Hilton Garden Inn on Atlantic Avenue between 33rd and 34th streets nicely expands the “Hilton block” at the northern end of the Virginia Beach. This brand is a step up from the nearby Hampton Inn and a couple of notches below the proper Hilton Hotel, also nearby.

Recommend using the complimentary in/out parking at garage across the street. The hotel allows you to unload, check-in, and get pass to keep in the car and the special card to keep with you, then park it yourself. It’s also a public garage (additional cars: $10/day weekdays, $15 Sat/Sun). Hotel’s valet service available for $16/day.

Hilton Garden does not offer the free Hampton breakfast, but does have a fridge (larger “dorm size”), microwave, and “Keurig” coffee maker in the rooms. There’s also free Starbucks coffee in the lobby each morning along with USA Today. You can save quite a bit if you plan ahead with a few groceries for breakfast and/or lunch. Ice machine for your cooler on each floor (we were glad we brought a large zip-lock bag for ice.)

The rooms are fine, but as noted elsewhere, the (very efficient) AC units are very loud, and exhaust onto the small balcony (table and two chairs). Try switching the AC fan to “on” instead of “auto”. That gives you constant “noise”, instead of the dramatic on/off. Heavy sleepers will not be bothered, but light sleepers will hear it every time; it’s an unfortunate design flaw in a new property. Avoid 3rd floor rooms with public sundeck and less-good views of beach. Corner rooms are the “suites”, with separated-by-the-bathroom sitting/pull-out couch area (no daylight). Bedding is good, lots of pillows. Good room lighting options. Hot water takes a while, but comes eventually. Great views of beach, people, dolphins, ships, and jet fighters from all rooms. Bring binoculars. Fireworks on Saturday nights. Live (acoustic, but amplified) outdoor music from north end restaurant ends at 10:00 pm Sun-Thurs and 11:00 pm on Fri/Sat.

The ocean-view breakfast restaurant is very pleasant and good, sometimes a line on weekend mornings (they offer a “fixed” $12.95 breakfast menu/buffet). The on-site Lager Heads restaurant for lunch and dinner is typical.

The pool is an inside/outside ground-floor facility, not oceanfront. Inside area is a little un-lovely albeit with a “cool” rainfall feature, while outside suffers from some traffic noise. No morning sun (use the 3rd floor sun deck). A few nice in-pool chaises available.

We found the staff pleasant, but the young/new/summer help doesn’t know much about anything except their specific job, so some internet research, combined with concierge help, is really your best bet on most issues. WiFi works great; Verizon has better phone coverage than AT&T in the rooms. TV and cable service is fine. The two guest elevators are marginally enough to handle the demand. Just chill, you’re on vacation. (When a thunderstorm chases everyone back in at the same time, a dozen elevators would not be enough!)

Get your complimentary beach (and pool) towels from the pool area (down the hall behind concierge desk). Though not advertised, a limited number (50?) of complimentary passes for two beach chairs (not chaise or umbrella) are available from the concierge beginning at 9 AM.

The beach is fantastic. If you haven’t been to Virginia Beach recently, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Three miles of “boardwalk” and biking (skating and boarding, too) with a wide beach and great sand. Bring a ball to play catch in the sand or ocean. Great swimming with lots of observant lifeguards. Rent chairs/chaises/umbrellas/cabanas by the day ($12-$20 each) or week (with a discount). Hint: Rent the chairs/chaises but bring/go buy your own umbrella. Crowds and tides make beach-walking a challenge, so the concrete “boardwalk” (and separate bike lanes) might be a preferred option for some.

All the commercial opportunities (non-hotel dining, pizza, ice cream, souvenirs, mini-golf) are on Atlantic Avenue, not the boardwalk. Great (if fairly slow) bus shuttle ($1, bills only) runs frequently with a stop near hotel at corner of 34th St. If you’re going more than 10-15 blocks, bus is a good option. Many hotels/condos have restaurants ocean side, which are accessible from the boardwalk. They have typical “beach” prices with good burgers, some well-prepared seafood (not sure how much is really “local”), some (expensive) good steaks, and poor fries. In season, after about 7 PM expect to wait about 30 minutes (longer on Sat. night) at any “sit-down” restaurant. A few places take reservations and “Open Table”. Use the coupon books (street boxes) for some good discounts on dining and merchandise.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms on public sun deck level have less full view of boardwalk and beach.

this is a new hotel on the boardwalk, located on the northern part of the beach. The staff is friendly and the hotel keeps a supply of drinking water in the lobby at all times. Complementary coffee is available in the lobby during the morning hours as well as cookies at night, but act fast as they go quick. The rooms are nice and not bad in size, however, there's 2 kind of suites, regular and oversized. while the regular suites are decent, the oversized ones are worth every penny, they're located on the north end of the building with lots of windows compared to the regular suites where the only source of light is the patio doors, the architects missed the boat on this one and I'm surprised The Hilton accepted the layout. Breakfast in the morning is really good, buffet style, decently priced and delicious.

Room Tip: If booking a suite, opt for the oversized suites, a lot bigger on the northern side of the hotel wit...

Service was fantastic. Rooms and overall hotel were clean. Pool was too small and elevators did not work well. Great location especially at night for relaxing on the boardwalk and listening to live music.

This is a beautiful hotel at a great location. The suites are fabulous, with views on three exposures. This is the type of place I would love to recommend without hesitation, but there are some odd kinks that are worth noting.

1. No bell service - luggage carts are available for self-service.
2. The pool and bar are technically separated by just a few feet (if only they had put a door through the wall that connects them), but there is no way to get your poolside drinks without walking out onto the street and around the building, or walking through the marble lobby in your wet bathing suit. Also, there is no way to easily get from the beach to the pool. I think the architect missed on a few key elements.
3. One morning there were no towels at the pool. It was a cloudy day, and mid-morning, so they didn't run out - they must not have stocked it that day. I asked several staff members over a period of several hours, but no action was taken. We went and got our bath towels from the room.
4. The hotel seems a bit understaffed. Breakfast service was slow. It took more than an hour and several phone calls to get extra pillows from the housekeeping staff.
5. The parking garage is a block away. Not a tremendous inconvenience, but not terribly convenient either.

I hope they overcome these hiccups. We really enjoyed our stay, and would return again.

Room Tip: The suites are well worth it. Spacious with great views.

Our family stayed here the second week of August...lovely receptionists, all the food servers were amazing and accomodating, I would give this a five star with the exception of one caveat, the handle on the shower kept popping off, when you would turn it to cold or hot, the whole thing would just pop off in your hand! So if it's scalding hot and it pops off, you are stuck being burned until you can pop it back on...we learned to hold it to the wall as we turned, I went down to tell the desk about it but each time there was no one there and we were headed out to the beach...so hopefully, they'll read this and fix it for the next guests! :) Other than that, it was beautiful, wonderful spot on the beach, lots of eateries across the way, convenience was key here for our family! We rented beach chairs and they allowed us to charge it to our hotel stay, also convenient! Would stay here again without hesitation, brand new facility with outstanding representatives in hospitality!
