“Excellent getaway”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

It was cold, wet and dreary weather when we arrived at Airlie. From the minute we checked in with Molly we felt welcome. She was extremely helpful, providing us with the history or Airlee and even taking our picture at the welcome reception. We stayed at the recently remodeled lodge which as its own lobby with a huge fireplace and wonderful views. The room was lovely and a welcome basket was a pleasant surprise consisting of fresh fruit and cheese.

Dinner and breakfast were included in our package from Living Social. It was a short walk or drive to the restaurant from the lodge. We were escorted to a lovely parlor where a huge wood-burning fireplace was blazing. We enjoyed champagne and local cheeses and salami were served. The dinner was outstanding, made with fresh herbs and wonderful flavors. The rutabega bisque, filet mignon with a beet puree, were outstanding. The lemon curd shortcake and toffee was a perfect ending to our five-course meal. The chef is quite personable and obviously extremely talented. the staff were extremely courteous and contributed to one of the best overnight getaways my husband and I have experienced.

There's a cozy pub complete with a full-size bar and another fireplace. A pool table and games are available for the guests. But we chose to just sit in our private lobby area at the lodge and read a book in front of the huge fireplace.

Unfortunately, it was a cold dreary January weekend and the weather didn't cooperate so we couldn't explore outside. The views were spectacular and I am already planning a return trip for an opportunity to explore the lovely grounds

Room Tip: Loved the lodge, but the lake cabins looked really rustic but charming

My wife & I spent a Friday night at Airlie with a 5 course meal.

Oh, the meal! Locally-sourced, with 90% of the produce grown on site. The ways the flavors played with each other and with the recommended wine - Herron merlot, was impressive. The amuse bouche did it's job of making us want more. Poached quail egg, pistachio coulis, tomato jam, dressed Swiss chard. We were hooked. On to the butternut squash bisque with a little fennel - enough to make it interesting, but not enough to overpower the squash. Then there was a finely minced apple & lemon preparation with a single tarragon leaf alongside a small vessel of mulled cider. All three opening courses were incredible. For the entrees, my wife had verlasso salmon on a cauliflower-parsnip mash with brocolinni and blue oyster mushrooms from North Cove Mushrooms, an excellent local grower, whom we've patronized. I had New York strip with roasted turnips and a clove demi-glace and a sweet potato-rutabaga hash. Both were very tasty. I found the hash to be a little more assertive than I wanted, but the beef was excellent. My wife found the brocolinni a little too salty and the dish, though quite good, lacking the "wow" of the initial courses. The dessert was very interesting: lemon and goat cheese sorbet with Virginia Riesling poached pear and blackberry coulis. It was great for its inventiveness, although the lemon overpowered the other flavors more than we expected. The chef came out and talked to each table, answering questions and ensuring everyone was pleased. It was truly a wonderful meal.

The staff were helpful and courteous. I was unsure of what to expect because prior to going, I'd spoken to three people on the phone, and none of them seemed happy. So if you have a phone interaction that seems curt, don't let it be a deterrent, as I found none of that in person.

We stayed in the lodge. The room was nice, essentially what I would consider a three star hotel room. The lodge had a comfortable foyer area with sofas, a fire place, and lots of windows.

Also of note, Fauquier county contains no fewer than 23 vineyards, which can make for nice outings.

We were very impressed by the beauty and expanse of the grounds. My wife went for a seven mile run in the morning, and she enjoyed the varied landscape - ponds, swans, geese, gardens, and more, even as the topography presented her a welcomed challenge. We can only imagine how stunning it must be in Spring. We will have to plan a return trip.

I was there about a month ago for a work event. The place is beautiful, service is great and the food is very good. The conference rooms where very comfortable, fully equipped and had an excellent snack and coffee break service. They also offer a good gym, and plenty of activities to relax and enjoy in your time off.

I stayed here as part of a business retreat in September 2013. It was very lovely despite a few hiccups. The grounds are picturesque and almost dreamlike. Plenty of nature to go around. Many encounters with wildlife. Meeting facilities are superb, state of the art and light and bright. Never felt like I was in a cave, which is key. Sleeping rooms are nice. We had a fire alarm at 1 a.m. that sent everyone scurrying outside. But it was resolved quickly. I stayed in a larger lodge but the smaller houses were very quaint and lovely. I could easily have a very romantic getaway in one of those places. Food was good, offering a variety of locally grown and organic sourced options. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is definitely your place because they offered many many options and not your typical fare. Overall service was good and they made accommodations for snafus. A rowdy wedding party left late on the day of our arrival causing many people to wait to get into their rooms. This is ideal for those that no problem walking or biking around. People with movements issues may be at a disadvantage because the complex has many buildings spread out. Overall a very nice place.

Hi Kate- Thank you so much for this wonderful review. We'd like to thank Mother Nature for our beauty – we couldn't have done it without her. As employees, we think it is a magical place, and to be honest it really never gets old seeing it all. We hope to see you again soon, whether it be at a conference or a private get away.

My husband and I recently stayed at Airlie (Sept 2013) using the Saturday night package. We really enjoyed our stay there. The grounds are beautiful and the location is very quiet. The staff was very friendly. The dinner was amazing! It tasted great and the plating was very pretty. The breakfast was just ok - alot of options but overall just ok.

The rooms were spacious, but need some updating. The walls are somewhat thin though - we could hear the person in the room next to us having a conversation on his phone.

Overall, I would recommend Airlie. We would return again.

I am so glad my husband and I discover Arlie! We had to wait to celebrate his mid-week birthday til this weekend and I am so glad we celebrated at Arlie. All our interactions with staff via phone, at the front desk, and in the restaurant were extremely pleasant and friendly. The dinner package included room, dinner, breakfast and the lovely views of the extensive, treelined roads and grounds. The dinner was amazing, our compliments to the chef. The chef was attentive to food allergies and customized the dishes accordingly-- with no lapse in quality whatsoever. The bread basket (three kinds of bread, all warmed, served with sweet, savory and buttery toppings) totally blew my Weight Watchers points but that is what the gym is for. The squash bisque was just right, a gentle blend of sweet and savory. The entrees were hearty yet not overwhelming, choices of Halibut or steak, both plated colorfully and expertly.

The wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive, and did not rush us at all. What a nice place to relax and unwind after a busy week!! We plan to return, because we didn't do a lot of things that we wanted to do because my husband still has a healing broken foot. We would have enjoyed biking around the property, checking out the onsite Pub, he would have enjoyed fishing-- and we would have like to have tried the breakfast on Sunday morning but frankly we were so full from our fabulous late dinner the night before we just had coffee and tea in our room and that was just fine. Oh, and the wine and cheese plate provided in the room was a great touch. The dinner package was incredibly reasonably priced, and we plan to return. We think this is a great place for couples looking for a relaxing weekend at a great price, and not too far from the DC area.

Room Tip: They have charging station for electric cars. :-)

I would think twice before choosing as a destination wedding unless you like cold food, poor lighting, bad attitudes and dangerous situations for walking and driving. It is not the place for older folks or anyone to walk at night. The employee attitudes are terrible. Keep aneye on your belongings or they may end up in lost and found or the mud.
For what they charge one would think you could open the shower door without knocking into the sink.

Too bad because the setting is beautiful.
