“PERFECTION IN EVERY WAY”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

My husband and I have stayed in many B & B's throughout the US and overseas and give The Speckled Trout the highest rating possible, as it perfect in every way. Kay obviously has found her calling and could not have been more accommodating and gracious. She had wonderful suggestions of things to do and see in the area and places to go for dinner and in general could not have been more helpful. The breakfasts were delicious, healthy, and presented beautifully in a lovely setting. Each evening there were wonderful desert options when we returned from dinner. The home was extremely comfortable and meticulously clean with beautiful furniture and interesting memorabilia. The bedding, towels, and bathrobes were of very high quality-by far the best in any accommodation we have stayed in. We stayed in the Royal Coachman room which was beautiful and very comfortable. I was concerned at first because the bathroom for the Royal Coachman was just outside of the room, however, it was never an issue. The bathroom was large and extremely well appointed. In fact if we have the great fortune to return again I hope we get the same room. Kay does indeed go beyond what most hosts do, in fact she asked if we had any suggestions to make her quests stays even better. We assured her there was absolutely nothing. It's hard to improve on perfection. The inn is located in a quiet residential setting with convenient parking. We highly recommend The Speckled Trout and hope to return someday.

Room Tip: We would choose to stay in the Royal Coachman again. The room and bed were very comfortable and eve...

Kay was our hostess and I must say she was what all hostesses should aspire to be. This is a meticulous, tasteful home filled with interesting family histories and great attention to the smallest detail. Kay served us a delicious breakfast that included sautéed nectarines and walnuts plus perfectly poached eggs with asparagus and hollandaise. Her genuine love of hosting really shined through in her warm smile and eagerness to make us as comfortable as possible. We highly recommend The Speckled Trout.

As other reviewers have noted, The Speckled Trout is made special by its gracious hosts, Jim and Kay. The home is beautifully decorated, clean and thoughtfully appointed with everything a guest could need. The location, while residential, is close to many scenic and popular spots (Blue Ridge Parkway, wineries,Charlottesville). That said, one of the nicest things about this B&B are its owners. Jim and Kay are genuinely interested in their guests and have led fascinating lives. They are happy to chat or give their guests privacy. They are also spectacular cooks and their breakfasts were one of the highlights of our trip. We were grateful to find this charming place and highly recommend!

Room Tip: The Quill room is the only room with an en suite bathroom.

My wife and I love the Charlottesville area, so for our first anniversary we were looking for a nice B&B near there to stay for the weekend. Pulled in by the glowing reviews of The Speckled Trout, we decided to stay there, and it lives up to every word. We were greeted by Kay, whose husband Jim was out of town for the weekend. She gave us a tour of their beautiful house, and provided some history for much of the incredible decor. She showed us to our room, the Quill Gordon room, which included an amazing four post bed and a bathroom in the room. Since we were the first ones there for the weekend, we also got to see the other two rooms, all of them immaculately clean and perfectly decorated.

She left us to get settled in our room, and a few minutes later we decided to go sit in the backyard and relax for a while by their gorgeous garden, and we met her coming up the stairs to bring us some refreshments; tea, fruit juice, and cookies! Just in the few minutes we were there she was already an incredible host and we truly felt at home.

Kay's hospitality never ceased for the entire long weekend (being Labor Day weekend, we stayed an extra night!). After a day of exploring the lovely town of Waynesboro and nearby Charlottesville, we came back and relaxed in the sitting room with a book, classical music playing over the radio, and Kay would offer coffee or refreshments and even a nightly dessert! There was chocolate lava cake one night, raspberry sorbet another night, and some delicious cheesecake! After being relaxed and fed, it was easy to fall asleep in the Quill Gordon's amazingly comfortable and welcoming bed!

In the morning is when The Speckled Trout really shines. We woke up to the most amazing breakfast smells, and made our way down to the sun room and sat with a cup of coffee while Kay served us the most amazing breakfasts. Each day would start out with a glass of orange juice and a small fruit dish. The first morning we had blueberries and cantelope, the second we had melon, raspberries, and blueberries, and my favorite was the third morning when she presented us with some warm peaches and nectarines with roasted pecans.

What followed these fruit courses was nothing short of divine. The breakfasts were incredible. The first morning we had a light, fluffy apple puff with some excellent sausage and a few slices of peaches. The puff was so light and flaky and while she brought out some maple syrup to go over it, the apples themselves were the perfect amount of sweetness. The second morning was my favorite breakfast of the three: Eggs florentine with a cranberry-orange scone. The eggs were cooked in ramekins with spinach and parmesan cheese and seasoned with salt and pepper. They were perfection! And the scone was served with a dish of lemon curd and a dish of freshly whipped cream for topping, both of which were excellent accompaniments to the scone. Our final morning, we were served an apple crisp pastry with sausage and some fruit. Again, the pastry was amazing and light, the apples very yummy, and it was covered in a delicious marmalade.

The visit made us feel like we were guests in Kay's gorgeous home. We wanted for nothing, and anything we asked for she provided with a smile. We will definitely be staying here again, and the sooner the better! My wife and I both highly recommend this lovely little place for anyone staying in the area. Look at these reviews, 27 (now 28!) 5 star reviews can't be wrong!

Room Tip: There are really no bad rooms. The Quill Gordon room has its own bathroom, the other rooms share the...

We stayed here one night as a convenient stop whilst travelling on the I81 to Philadelphia. The accommodation is Five Star, immaculate, clean and comfortable in a quiet setting. The food was excellent and Jim and Kay do everything they can to make you feel welcome including giving us very good advice about places to visit.
The house is tastefully and beautifully decorated, full of interesting artefacts and has a real "Southern mansion" aura about it.
We would have liked to have stayed another night and would have no hesitation in recommending The Speckled Trout especially to any English people travelling through the U.S.A.

My husband and I chose The Speckled Trout for a relaxed weekend getaway in April 2013. The B&B is in a quiet residential neighborhood and the home is historic without feeling stuffy. Kay and Jim are excellent hosts and are really the reason to stay here. We were greeted with a fruit punch and a tour of the home, Jim's love of history and flyfishing are evident. We enjoyed our stay in the Quill Gordon room , the bed was extremely comfortable after a busy day exploring the area. Breakfast was delicious, we especially loved the apple puff! While in the area we explored downtown Charlottesville, several of the area wineries and hiked nearby Crabtree Falls. We highly recommend a stay with Jim and Kay if your travels take you through Waynesboro.

Traveling alone, I recently stayed for 2 nights in the Royal Coachman room. I got to see all the rooms; they are pretty online, but in person they are even more beautiful (as is the rest of the house). I was extremely comfortable and lacked for nothing. My room’s bathroom was just outside the room. At first I honestly was a little concerned as to how that would go, but once there, it clearly worked out just fine and I would not hesitate to do it again. Breakfast is delicious and relaxed. Kay and Jim are cut out for this kind of business; it just flows naturally for them. They are kind and gracious and conversational; however, you can tell they sense whether you would like more or less interaction and are just very comfortable hosting. I never feel too awkward traveling alone, although they went out of their way to make sure I felt like I had attention or company if I wanted it, which is always nice. It’s definitely not by chance that they are highly rated. This is the kind of place where you’ll start thinking about a return trip before you even leave.
