“Indifferent”
Reviewed 12 August 2013 via mobile

I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past and it just doesn't seem to get better. It's ran by a family that lives on site, in the back office. Their personality when they greet new customers is "matter of fact"; it is as if they can take your money or leave it, to them it does not matter as there will be someone else that will stop and get a room apparently.

Their rates went up this year. A king size bed, with a mini fridge and an antiquated TV for $85 on a non holiday weekend seems a bit over the top- especially when this hotel is the furthest hotel outside of Williamsburg, VA.

I had an issue with a dirty toilet, (looked like mold- all over the toilet seat and lid) when I first entered my room (I always inspect my room when I first walk in). I went to the front office to tell them about it, the wife of the couple that runs the hotel, came to my room to clean the restroom. Less than 5 minutes, she was done and out the door. Not even an apology or an explanation.

This hotel issues you an actual key, not one of those digital cards (they used to, but I guess try went back to using a lock and key).

The pool is clean an adequate.

The breakfast area is very small and has just the minimal basics- no need to get up to eat breakfast, you aren't missing anything. Overall, it's an ok hotel, I just think the price of $85 is a little too high; after all, it's the Econo Lodge. Price should be more like $49-$65.

We pulled in to Econo Lodge for an overnight stay without a booking and decided to spend an extra night as so much to do around this historic area. The owners were both accommodating and friendly. The room had a super comfy bed, fridge and microwave and the room and bathroom were very clean. The accommodation was very reasonably priced and this included breakfast too. Highly recommend.

Had a first floor room and there was loud noise of bath tub filling and draining from room above me. Continental breakfast coffee and OJ was good but did not try the muffins. After got home I noticed was charged for an additional night and when callled the office to discuss got a bad response and he was defensive and argumentative. Not good customer service relations at all. So be sure you take care of business before you check out no matter how early in the morning it is.

Room Tip: Be sure you take care of business before you check out no matter how early in the morning it is.

I have stayed here twice now. The rooms are generally under $50 per night, a great deal less than staying closer to Williamsburg. The motel is perhaps the last one going west from Williamsburg on Route 60, but is close to the Williamsburg Pottery, the real reason for staying here. It's about a seven mile drive to downtown Williamsburg and Route 60 is crowded with restaurants and shopping malls. Staying here is like being in the country. There is a pool in the rear outside (I never used it), clean rooms, a good cable TV package, and a great deal of quiet. On the downside: breakfast is skimpy and you better plan to eat at a restaurant. I have not met the woman mentioned in another review, but the owner's son seems friendly and concerned, as does the owner. (I agree rudeness would make me stop coming here; there are too many competing motels to put up with anything.) In short, a good value for your money, just don't find the witch.

The front desk clerk (woman whose father owns the property, I think) is as rude as can be. I would not darken their doorway ever again, based on this alone.

On Grand Illumination weekend, this was one of the few hotels with rooms available on short notice, and the rates were very good. The place is definitely run down and could use refreshing & repair (esp. carpets and bathrooms). Beds were comfortable but pillows were useless. Shower was strong and hot. Not the greatest hotel ever, but for our purposes it was good--we were rarely in the room except to sleep and shower.

It's off the beaten path--actually located in Toano. When the big new pottery "mall" goes up, it may be in greater demand because it's rather close to that construction. Down the road a bit is Hot Stacks, a very nice pancake house that fills up less quickly than the ones downtown. From here, you have fairly easy access to downtown Williamsburg, although it's about a 10-min. drive.
