“Charming, Comfortable, Friendly and steps from the 1770's...”

The Williamsburg Lodge was originally built to handle overflow from the pricier Williamsburg Inn, shortly after the Rockefeller restoration of this colonial town opened. Recently renovated, the Lodge is not inexpensive -- but it enjoys the perfect location for a busy family. Park the car and walk to the 18th Century, literally just steps away. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated (we stayed in the 1980's Tazewell wing) but newer rooms were recently built and are similarly appointed. Food here is pricey. So jump in the car to visit familiar chain restaurants when needed. Parking is free. We had to work and play while here, so it was refreshing to have superb Wi-Fi service in rooms and in the lobby. Cell phone service a little spotty (on AT&T). We've stayed at cheaper Williamsburg properties, but the Lodge will get a return visit. It is comfortable and beautiful, with a relaxing bar/lounge also ideal for late-night e-mail! Golfers will appreciate that the famed Golden Horseshoe Course is just across the street, as is the Spa for those who like to indulge.

We stayed at the Lodge 3 nights beginning Christmas Eve. The front desk reception was lukewarm at best and not what I had expected. The room was fine, although I've never slept in such a totally uncomfortable bed. $300/night I DEFINITLEY expected more. We were locked out of the room twice - access cards were deactivated mysteriously, and had to walk from the farthest part of the hotel to the front desk twice to get this resolved, and with very little offered as apology (rude front desk again). Other than this everything was very nice. The food was excellent and the decor spectacular. Fellow travelers were friendlier than any other place we've been. Because it was Christmas? Maybe. Great!

We booked our stay at this hotel for a weekend excursion to Colonial Williamsburg. We hadn't stayed in one of their properties before, but really wanted to be within walking distance to the park. This hotel truly delivered and exceeded our expectations. I reserved the room online and requested one of the rooms with the hardwood floors for the more "authentic" historical experience. Our room was gorgeous and quite big. The bed was amazingly comfortable and the amenities were wonderful. I think it could be considered a bit pricey if you tried to include their restaurants in your visit, but if you're in Williamsburg, you're certainly better served by going to one of the taverns. Overall though, I would highly recommend this hotel and certainly plan on visiting it again myself.

Make sure you keep inventory of items taken out of you suitcases for return to same upon leaving the lodge. If you forget any item it seems as though they can't find any left items as minor as a cell phone charger. I made three phone calls to the Lodge and spoke with house keeping and was promissed a return call which I didn't receive. Called a third time and spoke with a desk clerk and didn't receive any help.

Wonderful location on edge of historic area. Nice rooms, if a bit pricey. We stayed in Tazwell and were satisfied there. It's a haul from the main bldg but path is all under roof. Our king room was large and nice but bathroom was worn and in need of updating (e.g., mismatched tub & vanity, rusted fixtures). Nice to have extra vanity / sink outside the bathroom. Did not notice the smoke smell in Tazwell mentioned by prior reviewer. Staff all friendly and helpful--particularly at the front door. Hotel provided van shuttle to and from theaters and restaurants in town. Room seemed clean but housekeeping was understaffed--room not made up when we got back at 4:30 one day, forgot to restock coffee fixins another. Breakfast service very slow in their restaurant, one day because they were obviously understaffed and the other--just because... Definitely not worth the price for either buffet or regular menu. Pool looked nice but hard to find (no maps of the Lodge in the room or posted around grounds). Very helpful at the desk where you can buy tickets for events but they do not do restaurant reservations there. If you want to have dinner at Kings Arms or Christina Campbells--call before you leave. We could not get dinner reservations for any of the 3 weekdays we were there. Did have a nice lunch at Kings Arms--but were much happier (so much we went twice) with dinner at Chownings--good beer, reasonably priced food (a Sampler for $20 was plenty for 2), friendly service, nice company (seated with 2 other couples one nite and table for 2 the other), and free entertainment (magician and musicians both nights we were there). Bus service to historic area and town worked out well for us--it is handicapped accessible.

When my family and I ( a party of four adults) drove up to the Williamsburg Lodge, we were excited about seeing our room. The gentleman at the valet handled our luggage and stated he would have the bellman bring our bags to our room. We checked in went to the room, which took for ever to get to because they put us in the Tazwell building which I called them up and told them I didn't want because I requested to be in one of the newer buildings. Just a thought to all of you non smokers out there. Don't stay in the tazwell wing, before you could open the door of the building it reaked of cigarette smoke so bad. My eyes we watering and I actually felt I was in a Las Vegas Casino puffing away. We went to the front desk and told them about the situation but they first stated they were totally all booked up and they finally found us a room which they said was an upgrade. It was in the main lodge it was the Hepburn Suite. It looked nice at first with the large entry, large colonial dining table with chairs and then we noticed it had one queen size bed and two make down sofas. We paid for two queen beds, not make down sofas. We don't even give guests at our house that and they still complain. The bathroom was so small. I have seen bigger ones in motorhomes. The kitchen was bigger than the bathroom and there was no mini-refrigerator in the kitchen at all. Well , that night we pulled out both sofas to get ready for bed and there we no sheets or blankets or pillows. We called down to housekeeping and told them we need all of the above. Someone came finally about 20 to 30 minutes later and said oh don't know how that happened. Well finally it was settled but we had to make our own beds because they just gave us the sheets and a filthy bedspread. The same thing happened the following night with the linens and blankets. This time it took them almost one hour to bring them up again we had to make the bed. I have got to say I would love to know where they get there sofas because they are the best torture devices to have for you guests that you don't want to have around long. The mattress was awfull. When it comes to dining. Don't eat there at the lodge for dinner go to King Arms or Christiana Campbells. But do eat at the lodge for there regular menued breakfast. The sunday brunch is good but I had reservations for 10:30 and they weren't ready yet for the customers. What the tipping, don't over tip. I would only recommend this hotel if you call up resevations and you stipulate I want to be in a new building period. Other than the room incident , I had a great time.

great location for being in williamsburg and being with kids... you can run back to the hotel easily if needed. and they have all the conveniences. room service was very good - nothing int he mini bar though. We booked well in advance and got a very good rate. Agree with other reviewer that you do need to ask about what you get with your stay. not a whole lot put forward about what you get as a hotel guest unless you ask.
