“Don't Knock the Faux-Colonial Wallpaper”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

We loved this hotel! It's so convenient to get to Colonial Williamsburg - a *lovely* 8 minute stroll through gorgeous scenery, past a real working plantation, to the gate! Or you can jump on the frequent free shuttle bus and get off or on at numerous stops. The hotel is spacious, WOODSY, well laid out and very relaxing! The pool is heated, the people in the lobby are friendly Southerners. Two words I would use to describe this hotel are FAMILY and FRIENDLY. The breakfast is fantastic, lots of seats for everyone, great food choices, and everything is really clean. I don't know how they clean the rooms because you never, ever see the maids and they are never clogging up the halls with cleaning carts. There was a magic show with a rabbit for the kids in the lobby. This hotel is a great price, too. As for the faux colonial wallpaper - there is something really charming about it! We loved it! (-:

I cannot begin to say how much we loved the hotel, the staff and the beautiful property. The breakfast was sooo good. The breakfast choices were like no other. Continetal ? Nope its a hot meal! Potatoes, Virginia ham or bacon , sausages grits, oatmeal ,fruit, cereal, muffins, banana bread so yummy eggs, bagels, toast, peanut butter, juices ,coffee, tea,hot chocolate, and more! They offer everything you can imagine. The make your own waffles were my kids favorite. From the awesome lobby to the golf and games they offer families to the driver that picked us up from the Amtrak station. Everything felt perfect. The grounds are so beautiful to walk around , the visitors center has the free shuttles to go to colonial towns and the local orange bus connects you to a transit center that allows you to make connections to another local bus that takes you to Walmart, food places,Busch Gardens , water country , go karts plus , etc. For those that don't want to drive there are bus options. One way is $1.25 or get an all day pass for $2.00 good deal. Our train was at 5pm check out is at 11am but they let us leave our bags and go out and come back to chill in the lobby for a few until our train was coming. So family friendly!!!! Sorry but if you complain then you're a hard to please person.

Room Tip: If your family member has a disability or little kids who have to walk back to the room , get a room...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Woodlands. We were able to walk to Colonial Williamsburg on a great paved trail (although bus shuttles are available). The rooms are well sized, immaculate, and quiet. We had a package plan that included access every day to the Colonial Williamsburg sites, and that was a terrific value. Hotel staff all were very helpful. A continental breakfast is included with the room, making it very convenient, but my recommendation would be to walk (20 minutes) or drive (4 minutes) to Aromas Coffeehouse Bakeshop & Cafe. There you will find delicious breakfasts and baked goods, terrific coffee, and very friendly, helpful service.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms are possibly a bit quieter.

Our stay at Colonial Williamsburg was at the Woodlands Hotel and Suites. It is quite large, but they treat you like you are staying in a small hotel. Good service and beautiful lobby. The rooms were nice and quite -- even though there were school groups who were staying in the building too. The morning breakfast was plentiful and varied and the breakfast room was clean and charming. To top this off, they are just a short walk to the Visitor Center where you can pick up a bus to Colonial Williamsburg.

The location is good. The shuttle is convenient. Unfortunately, during our stay, breakfast was moved from the main building to a conference center. We were drenched just from having breakfast. I am surprised about the praise for breakfast? It is the standard continental breakfast you get at a Day's Inn with the make your own waffles and what looks like eggs but doesn't taste like eggs. It would be great if they offered real hard boiled eggs. Plumbing and the internet are both spotty and slow moving at best. Have already had to call maintenance on day 2 and will need to call again on day 4. The beds are extremely hard and uncomfortable.

It is not the worst place we have stayed but we would not stay here again.

The Woodlands Hotel offers something that few conference centers can deliver: placement in a fresh, forest environment within walking distance of a major historical attraction. Even more remarkably, the staff of what could easily be a tourist- or conventioneer-trap are exquisitely polite and take great pains to welcome as well as to assist guests. Especially admirable is the ready availability of a shuttle, which makes up for the twenty minutes required to walk into the Colonial Williamsburg installation (although that walk is a remarkably pleasant one that passes through both groves of trees and historical sites). The drawback of the Woodlands is that it has not completely shed its conference center identity. Its rooms and its furnishings are slightly austere, a deficit that is somewhat concealed by the over-the-top wallpaper on the accent walls of rooms--a rendering of an eighteenth-century, colonial-era, highly sentimental pastoral motif. Pastoral ease gives out at the bathroom door, where water pressure in the shower and other fixtures is on the low side. These occasional Spartan counterfoils take this hotel out of the "romantic" or "getaway" category and returns it to the "business" zone. The hotel offers one restaurant that makes nice, generous single-slice pizzas and where the food offers good flavor but where the service is clumsy (upon arrival at the hostess pillar, the guest is immediately asked for his or her room number and other irrelevant information; during my visit, I waited ten minutes for a table in a restaurant that was half empty). The Woodlands is definitely a superior alternative to the somewhat synthetic, would-be-historical hotels in Williamsburg proper, but it has some way to go before it becomes a genuine resort spot or luxury haven.

Great staff and excellent customer service. The breakfast buffet was fantastic. Rooms were spotless and well maintained. Great prices on package deal for the rooms and Colonial Williamsburg tickets. We had a great time.

Room Tip: Ask the front desk for a recommendation.
