“Take a relaxing trip back in time!”

From start to finish, this was a wonderful, relaxing trip! Our host was very prompt with replies to any questions that we had and was full of great information about the home and some of the beautiful furnishings. The rooms were very comfortable and more than roomy enough for our family gathering. The house was clean and in very good repair. We loved sitting around the beautifully crafted dining room table with a fire in the fireplace, enjoying our meals and some fun family game time. The outside areas close to the home allowed for some wonderful time to enjoy our whole family and the beauty of all the nature around the house. Can't wait to return!!!

“Unique, enjoyable place to stay”

A group of friends (4 couples) stayed at Lightwood for 3 nights. It is a fine, interesting house with a wonderful history. 2 bedrooms are good sized, 2 are small, and the twin beds room can be accessed by a separate steep stairway or through one of the larger bedrooms. The bathrooms are modern but only two in the house so some patience and coordination of showers will be needed for larger groups. The walk in the woods was very enjoyable with maintained and signed trails but we could have benefited by availability of a rough map.
We spent one day in Colonial Williamsburg and one at Historic Jamestown and the Jamestown Settlement. We would have liked to have another day to explore the sights around Surry, and more time to just relax at the house. The ferry ride was pleasant but requires some care to arrive at the right time to avoid too much delay. We missed the ferry back by a few minutes at night so spent almost an hour watching the fish hunting from the dock.

“fabulous”

Cliff thought of absolutely everything! he welcomed us with fresh flowers is the bedrooms and living room, had the grounds and home in spectacular condition! The grounds are beautiful and so quiet and peaceful. We could visit and play and be loud with our fun! I pay to visit homes like this but I got to STAY in this one all week! Couldn't ask for more. It is basically centrally located to all the tourist activities you would want to see. The ferry runs quickly and is free. I visiting the historic triangle, I would definitely recommend Lightwood House!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lightwood House. It was so nice to have our group of nine people in the same house instead of separate hotel rooms. While we enjoyed visiting nearby attractions such as the Jamestown Settlement and Busch Gardens, our favorite vacation memories are of Lightwood House. We had three children with us ranging in ages from two to twelve and they all loved the toys and games. They played in the yard and loved the balcony over the kitchen and secret passageway. The owners have beautifully decorated the home with lovely furniture and antiques. My twelve year old said that on a scale of one to ten, this house is a twelve! We hope to stay at Lightwood House again!

“The perfect fit for a Williamsburg vacation!”

We spent three nights at Lightwood for a multigeneration family vacation. It was the perfect base for a trip to all the tourist sites around Williamsburg. The grounds are quiet and private, and it feels great to drive through the front gates and not even see the house. The house itself was so much fun. The kids loved exploring every nook and cranny and everyone enjoyed all the period decorations and art. The dining room easily accommodated our party of 9 and the kitchen was fine for preparing a few meals - it had everything we needed.

The guest rooms were nice, especially the two larger ones. Kids really liked the attic bedroom, and everything was cool and comfortable, even though it was quite hot out. The downstairs room was a bit cramped, but for those who don't like steep steps, it was appreciated (along with the downstairs full bath). The living room had a music system and TV (although who needs that in this location!) and easily sat our group. Everything was clean, there were plenty of towels, and Cliff was always just a phone call away.

Best of all were the early mornings - outside by the patio with only birds to hear and blue skies above. Truly a great escape and so much better than staying in a soulless hotel or condo village.

Although it takes a bit of extra time, we really enjoyed taking the ferry every day to get to the attractions on the north side of the James River. It's about 20 and they were usually on schedule, more or less. Plus it is free.

We look forward to returning in the spring or fall, as we want to walk the entire property. The trail looked great, but it was just a bit too buggy and muggy this time.

Overall, we'd highly recommend Lightwood, and it made our vacation truly a memorable one.

“A wonderful retreat!”

We vacationed here with friends earlier this month. There were four adults and six children in our group. We had a terrific stay at Lightwood. The owner was accessible and attentive to our needs and questions. There were special touches throughout the home. There were fresh flowers tucked in various corners and the crock pot was left out after we inquired about it. The house, although very old, was very clean and well appointed. It was charming and inviting. The towels and linens were plentiful and soft and clean. We never ran out of hot water. The kitchen had lots of dishes for our large group. There is even a dining room filled with china for dinner parties. There were lots of empty cupboards for our groceries. The gas fireplaces kept things warm even when we had snow outside!

We loved the history of the home and the many touches that made it so fun for our children. They loved the "secret passage" and the nook over looking the kitchen. We enjoyed snuggling by the fire reading, putting together puzzles, and playing games. The boys had great fun with the toy guns and wooden train tracks. The backyard was lots of fun for the children and we enjoyed the hiking trails.

I will mention the upstairs room got very hot in the evening, so we were thankful to find a window that would open for a light breeze. There were plenty of blankets in the bedrooms so the children were nice and cozy. While this home is close to Williamsburg, our little ones enjoyed riding the car ferry to and from our adventures.

We had the most wonderful time in the home. It is a vacation in itself. We hope to return again when your cute garden is in bloom!
