Spent the entire weekend at the George Washington Hotel. Our first but not last visit. The room was spacious, beautifully furnished and updated on the 3rd floor. The staff could not have been more gracious or accommodating. We felt like we were in a magnificent country inn. The pool was a delight. A most see and swim. Do bring your bathing suits. Breakfasts at the Dancing Goat were delicious and not the usual fare. A must is the Sunday Buffet. Besides being an excellent value, the diversity and quality was outstanding. A must is the biscuits and sausage gravy. Unfortunately, only a Sunday treat on the menu. The servers were attentive and provided excellent guidance on menus selection. House Staff and front desk exceeded all expectations including Gary the Bellman. Each employee shared the history of Winchester, the Old Town (a must to see); The John Handley High School and Handley Library; Daniel Morgan (the Patriot) and George Washington. Upon visiting those sites you felt you were at THE UNIVERSITY (U of Virginia for those above the Mason Dixon Line). Beds were outstanding; Room quiet even with multiple wedding parties and high school graduations. Worth a stop over to remember when traveling north or south on 81 or in search of the Shenandoah National Park. Apparently a completely opposite experience to the previous review on the very same weekend. Definitely, one of the best hotels we have stayed anywhere in the US or Europe. Small Inn atmosphere. Outstanding value! Spotless. One Grand Hotel!

Room Tip: Reserve early to get the best rates.

We requested rooms together with our friends, and we ended up on different floors on complete opposite sides of the hotel. The front desk blamed it on the 1-800 number, and wouldn't try to make it right. You have to pay for parking,, (which was explained to us very poorly) which is VERY limited. They say they are green and to hang your towel on the towel rack if you wanted to keep the towels. We didn't have a towel rack. One hook on the back of the bathroom door. Was clean and comfortable, and housekeeping asked if we needed anything else for our room. We were on the fourth floor but could hear the music from the lounge in our room.

Location in Winchester Historic District dictated the choice as well as easy access and parking. The hotel is in all aspects a first class place - well appointed lobby, beautiful architecture, professional staff, superb furnishings throughout - a real pleasure to find. Yes, the staff - no newly hired youngsters here with only basic training - all very, very good people, knew exactly what they were doing, competent and experienced. The room - very well furnished, excellent bed, no institutional furnishings here, everything in fine taste, bathroom finely done, excellent fittings, mindblowing shower stall (no tub) excellent towels, etc. The dining room was on a floor below the lobby - but again, well appointed and with a satisfying menu - good wine list. The main bar, on the lobby floor, well appointed, well arranged, congenial, not dressy, friendly and well stocked. Only an overnight stay here, but was very reluctant to depart.

Room Tip: a King suite is good bang for buck
