We recently spent 8 nights sailing from Seattle to Friday Harbor. Rosario Marina was our favorite stop. The convenient dock leads right up to the Cascade Bar and Grill. We had both lunch and dinner there and found the food good, prices reasonable and staff very friendly. We had the same waitress for lunch and dinner and felt very well taken care of. Definitely try the cornbread! The fish tacos were a favorite in our group – and the ribs! The marina facilities are very good (fee was $75 for a 34’ boat—a bit pricey but those are summer rates ), as well as showers that don’t need coins and are clean. The moorage fee includes use (for 4 people) of the pools (indoor and outdoor) at the mansion and the whirlpool (which was wonderfully hot and welcome after a cold rain). Towels are provided at the spa. Every day at 4PM the general manager plays the Aeolian Pipe Organ in the upstairs museum –quite a treat to hear. The grounds have tether ball courts, a volley ball court and a fire ring. By chance, some musicians were at the marina that night and played for hours around the fire. There is also a well stocked small store sharing the space with the Bar and Grill. We were able to stock up on a number of things we were out of – lunch foods, chocolate and beer, for example! The whole experience was great and we would highly recommend this marina on Orcas island as a stop. It’s a great place to walk and has beautiful views—what more does one need?

If you don't trip over the cracks in the sidewalk or fall into the non-functioning, dried-up fountains, the scenery is beautiful. The resort as a whole is rundown and the grounds are not kept up. Since being there, I heard they have plans to fix it up, but unfortunately, they are charging room rates as if they have already pulled the weeds
growing out of the second floor wooden deck. We ate at Cascade Bay Grill a couple times and the food struggled. The ribs were tough and cold throughout and the clam chowder was even colder and incredibly bland. The service was nice and friendly, but couldn't make up for the fact that we could have purchased a more satisfying meal at the Chevron down the street. I definitely don't recommend dining there.

I have reached out to this guest to find out more about their visit. I apologize their experience at Rosario was not as expected. I certainly hope they let their server know of their dissatisfaction during their several visits to the Cascade Bay Grill, allowing us to improve this guest’s experience. As I have mentioned before, we certainly want to have our guests satisfied during their visit, and there is little we can do for them once they are gone.

We do have several vacant guest buildings that are scheduled to be torn down, which include the mentioned unusable water features. We are continually striving to improve this historic property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our standard room rate in the height of the season is $159, compared to $575 for West Coast Ritz Carlton properties. We do not advertise Rosario as a “luxury” resort, but as other reviews confirm, we offer very clean and comfortable waterfront rooms in a spectacular setting.

Rosario has a gorgeous setting, no doubt, but don't think you will be staying in the beautiful old mansion pictured in its ads. Read the small print: there are no rooms located in the main building, and likely your room will be quite far away from the pool with the great view, the main restaurant, and the manse's bar. We spent two nights recently in the farthest room away from the mansion, which necessitated driving and finding a parking place every time we wanted to use the main facilities. The view from the deck was great, but there was little privacy since the other unit's deck was on the other side of a portioning divider. In fact, the smell of smokers around us was off-putting. The deck was never swept, and was strewn with leaves and debris from check- in to check- out. These units are from the seventies and need updating, banisters were rotted out, everything needed a paint job. We noticed very poorly maintained trim, decks, walks throughout the property. The whole place badly needs upgrading---the units we stayed in and even those closest to the main manse. It's a unique property, but don't expect anything other than very average facilities. The small lower pool has no ambiance whatsoever--it's just a bare rectangle surrounded by cement--looks like a cheap , community pool. The grill at the marina was very reasonably priced (open only till Labor Day) and the food was good, but it's for warm weather (outside tables except for about 3, or 4 very basic self-serve ones inside the store). We heard (from a waiter) that the main restaurant is "coming back" from a poor reputation, now that they've changed chefs. Didn't try it, though. The hotel is right next to Moran Park, so if you plan to hike or enjoy the lakes, the location is great. Keep your expectation realistic and you'll enjoy Rosario!

Room Tip: Check the website map to see where you'll be. In most cases you'll need to drive to facilities of the hotel. Otherwise, it's a ten to fifteen minute walk up and down hills. Be aware of this!

We were on Orcas Island and saw good reviews on TripAdvisor so we stopped by to view the museum and check out the resort for possible dinner or to book a future reservation. The museum is on the second floor and contains a few pieces from the Moran family and lots of photographs. It was interesting, but was not a large collection. After the museum, we went downstairs to the main desk and the female employees working there were very rude and condescending when we asked questions. The general feeling I had when viewing the property was that the view was awesome but the resort looked worn. There is also a spa there, but I certainly didn't get a "spa" feeling from the ambience, or lack of it. Based on the general appearance and the attitudes of the employees, we did not pursue trying to book a future reservation. Would not recommend.

I am sorry to hear of this visitor’s experience at Rosario. I have reached out to them for more information, as this treatment comes as a surprise. As previous guest reviews on tripadvisor support over and over, we have a very friendly and helpful staff. I am also sorry this visitor did not get a chance to experience the resort from the perspective of an overnight or dinner guest, as most guests are pleased with the historic nature of the century old Moran Mansion, which incorporates our dining and spa facilities; however, they do point out how important first impressions are.

I was very worried after reading reviews of this hotel but it was all that was left on Orcas for 4 people. I wish we'd stayed here longer and skipped one night in Seattle. I cried when we left. We had 2 adults and a 15 and 8 yr old. The room has a huge king room(with it's own balcony and fridge and microwave) separate from the rest of the little apartment. There is a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. The living room has a couch that an 8 year old can sleep on but there is also a pull down bed-double size. Our kids just both slept in it. there is another balcony off the living room. The views of the Harbor are beautiful. The pool is heated but still chilly at night but kids don't care. Deer are roaming all over the place day and night. We did not eat there because we had the kitchen. We did use the convenice store which was nice. The inside pool is for kids in the main hotel. Kids are not allowed at the main outside pool, which was fine. Hot tub area is nice. I didn't want to leave the balcony honestly. I wish we would have taken a seaplane to Seattle to eat at the Space Needle and flown back to stay here 2 more nights. No offense to Seattle. You are also right by the State Park and it is lovely. We zipped on San Juan and that was a full day due to ferry times. We did not drive our car on-we parked down by the ferry but you have to get there very early to get a spot if you want to walk on the ferry. We whale watched from Orcas with Eclipse and that was great and conveinent. LOVED ORCAS!!!!! Want to go back soon!
