“Great relaxed home away from home”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2013

I planned on off-season weekend for my husband's birthday here in early March. The staff is very nice and helpful. I like that it does not feel like a "resort" as I know them (although I think most San Juan Island "resorts" should always be in quotes...they tend to be quaint, which is fine by me). The cabins are very clean, well-stocked for cooking, comfortable furniture, etc. We stayed in the smallest rustic cabin the first time, then booked a weekend with the in-laws in one of the larger and more deluxe cabins (i.e. more modern decoration, TV/boom-box with AUX plug-in, so I was happy I could play my i-pod). Was very happy with both! The negative reviews that knock the campsites etc....well, if the state park is full, I think this would be a great alternative. Although, for a campsite, Moran State Park or Doe Bay Resort would definitely be better. But when on the island, I'd be planning to spend my time canoeing, hiking, etc. so a place to lay my head in a tent would be all I would expect. So back off camping complainers! If you want a more hippy feel, go to Doe Bay Resort which is very cool. We would certainly stay again. They have possible plans to install a better hot tub area. I would give them a "5" if they do. The one they do have was out of order on our second trip out, and it's really just a small, house-sized hot tub with a wooden bench beside it.

If looking for a 5 star resort, go elsewhere. If looking for peace, quiet, & a place little ones can play on the beach, keep reading. Have been coming here for 30 years and observed the resort evolve from scuba divers hideaway to a family treasure. Situated on the NW corner of Orcas Island, along a rocky beach with.a fantastic pier, mooring docks in the summer & buoys Gas, kayak and boat rentals.

Room Tip: reserve in advance, limited availability during summer no wifi in cabins, office area only no TV...

We gave the West Beach Resort a try, but didn't care for it at all, primarily because, as some people have mentioned, it felt more like a trailer park than a resort. Additionally, they charged more for pets than listed on the Website, and never mentioned on the site that they charge .25 for 90 seconds in the shower! What??? We paid $269 to stay two nights in a "tent cabin" (kind of like a yurt, only not as nice), and had to pay to shower? It was ridiculous!
The cabins look much nicer, but they're right on top of one another. I think we'll pass on a repeat visit.

Green Features: No recycling bins! There was a dumpster with the recycling symbol on it, but it was full of trash.

Thank you for your feedback. West Beach Resort offers many lodging options for our guests, including cottages, tent cabins, RV, and camping. Our resort has distinct "zones," including the cottages, store/marina, and campground. These zones are separate from one another so as to minimize impact. Many guests tell us how much they appreciate our layout - how the campground does not affect the cottages. Our main road does meander through the part of the campground before you come down to the cottages and store/marina area, but again no camping/RV sites are located in this area. Our small RV area in the campground can hold a maximum of 11 RVs. Our tent cabin rates for this time of year are $99/night. Pets are $12/night in the tent cabins.

We visited the resort to attend a friend's wedding and were thrilled to find ourselves at such a lovely place for four days. The property offers spots for tenting, "glamping" RV's, and cabin rentals. The cabins down by the beach offer unobstructed views of the ocean and are mere steps from the water. Cabin #7 was newly renovated and had two bedrooms with new, comfy, clean beds - one with a ocean view and another snug wood panelled room. The combined living room (futon couch) and kitchen (round table easily seats 4-5) will remind you of eclectic cabin style, rather than country chic. Great water pressure in the bathroom shower. We loved that we had a picnic table on our front deck and deck chairs to view the sunsets. Campfires were allowed but a 10:30 "quiet time" was enforced to make sure a peaceful environment was maintained. Friends were a few cabins away (#11) and I was not as impressed with their older and mustier accommodations. Beds looked beyond well worn and were not too appealing. Very nice staff...we arrived after 9:00 pm and they made sure our cabin was accessible and welcoming. A nice combination of comfort and convenience in a beautiful, natural setting..ideal for kayakers to launch their boats from the beach or enjoy a nature walk.

Green Features: No recycling efforts were made whatsoever. We were shocked to find that basic beverage sorting was not even done. Plastic, glass, and paper all went into general garbage.

We were pleased to host this beautiful wedding at our beachfront ceremony site. What a great event! A quick note - all of our beds are brand new as of February 2013. Deluxe units have brand new pima cotton linens, and all other units have new bedding as of 2012.

We stayed in one of the older cabins but it suited our needs just fine. The amenities are a bit primitive but you come here to unwind and if you like to relax without distractions from tv and internet, this place is perfect. The location cannot be beat - the beach is right outside the front door. We enjoyed listening to the waves and the rain at night and building a fire with the provided wood. Easy access to Eastsound and a short drive to ferry and hiking trails. We brought two dogs that loved our stay just as much as we did, and we really appreciate that the dogs are welcome here. Hope to come back soon!

Recently, my husband, who just celebrated his 79th birthday, was fishing off of the east side of Lopez Island (just a short jaunt from Cornet Bay on Whidbey Island.) When his best friend couldn't make it, he decided to go out alone. He hit something with the prop of the engine and when he went to look down to see what was the problem, he fell in the bay. Luckily, our 19 ft. boat had a little step on the back end of it and he was able, in time, to get back in the boat. It seems that when he fell,he hit his head on the boat and this may have been what disoriented him. Instead of heading east back to Whidbey, he goes north. We still can't imagine exactly what route he took to end up at West Beach Resort on Orcas Island, but thank the Lord he did, almost out of gas. Hilary Barnes and her husband found him and took them into their cabin where they gave him warm clothes and a nice meal while he tried to warm up from his hypothermia experience, Jamie, the resort manager, gave him a cabin to stay in that night and free mooring for his boat. No charge. Wow! You don't find that very often nowadays. Thanks to all of you who kept my husband and our kids dad safe until we arrived the the next day to pick him up. Just reaffirms the fact that there are still such good people as these!

My sister, my 3 teen age children, their 2 teen aged cousins, and my 2 year old all stayed in cabin #3 on the beach (two to each bed, two on the futon, and one on a sleeping bag...and the little guy wherever he wanted to be!)...Best time EVER :) I could not have been happier, we were cozy, if you are looking for more space they have other cabins available that may fit you better, but we liked being so close, that is what we were there for!
Everyone had plenty to do....some of our favorites were: Exploring the town of Eastsound, Mount Constitution (amazing to look down on eagles soaring!) at Moran State Park and the hiking around it, LOW TIDE in the evenings was my two year olds favorite, kayaking with the harbor seals, exploring the beach in general, and the teens loved the hot tub and the beach bonfires (who doesn't love smores, chai, a fire and the peace of the water at dusk!).
We arrived after hours and found a note on the front office door with our name on it containing instructions on how to proceed. It was simple, welcoming, and warm. It felt like coming home and camping at the same time. The next day I went to check in and the staff were just amazing. As was their Island made Chai tea :)
A+ service we will DEFINATELY be returning often!!
