“Heavenly weekend at China Beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2007

Just returned from an anniversary weekend at China Beach Retreat. We loved our time there; it is a magical place. The lodgings are splendid, the bedrooms are cozy with amazing views (that you can still see when you lay in bed, as the windows sit high on the wall) and the bathrooms have beautifully detailed custom tilework.

The living room downstairs is quite comfortable, with an interesting collection of both asian antiques and northwest artifacts. The deck and its glorious view of Baker Bay held us so tightly when we first arrived that we didn't move off the deck for three hours.

We much preferred the privacy at China Beach to staying at a more traditional bed and breakfast. It is necessary to drive to the Shelbourne Inn B&B in the morning for your breakfast (8 minutes away?) but really not a big deal at all, especially considering the amount of privacy you are getting in return. And those breakfasts are incredible. Because the mushrooms all popped up this week, we were treated to an amazing collection, gathered by the innkeeper and incorporated into the breakfast menu. My husband and I both think we'd never tasted anything better.

We've stayed in many fantastic places over the years -- the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, the Hotel Matira in Bora Bora, Tassahara Zen Center in Carmel -- so we know a special place when we see it. China Beach is one of those places. Don't miss it.

$269 fo a shack on the marsh a few blocks from town. No beach here. This tired old shack is split into three rentable rooms and a common area. Very outdated "Sears" type furniture. Dirty. Poorly maintained. The bed we stayed in smelled of mold. Discusting. Broken screen door. Lights that don't work. The kitchen was decorated in early 1970 blue and reds (see photo). Nice view but not worth the money or aggravation to stay here. Avoid, avoid, avoid or you'll feel fooled the way we were.

  • Liked — Nice view of the ocean.
  • Disliked — The shack / accomodations were poorly managed and maintained.

So here's the deal--if you want a romantic getaway and you don't try out the Audobon Cottage at Chine Beach--you goofed! We owned one of the top inn's in the country--and this place outdoes us. It is a one of a kind gem. Set apart from the main lodge at China Beach, surrounded by naturlized gardens and a salmon stream, looking out over salt marsh to bay and river filled with wildlife in the near vista and ocean going steamers and mountain peaks afar, this two story abode has an outdoor hot tub AND an indoor two person spa tub. It has all the romance possible with a king bed, an unbelievably beautiful bathroom--and (for him?)a flat screen TV mounted high up a wall where it won't disturb the view.

We took the suite, while family took over the three rooms at the lodge. Each of them is also wonderful--and you have the huge great room and kitchen to yourself as well.

We breakfasted up at the Shelburne (just a few minutes away). Your choices for breakfast (included in the unbelievably low rate)range from their Cranberry croissant ricotta french toast (my wife licked her plate) to the Hangtown Fry Oyster omelet that was so rich I needed no further sustence for hours! (The next day we did their 8 grain oatmeal--with the fresh fruit and home made breads it was still a treat though not quite so deadent.)

We chatted with others who were staying at the Shelburne--one of the most charming and historic inns in the state. The neat thing about this place is that you can stay at the inn or down at the cottages and still enjoy the same berakfast... After inviting another couple down to see our place, they booked two more days down there--guess they fell in love all over.

Seriously--we don't give 5 stars to hardly anybody. We are PICKY! But the Audobon deserves all five and more. It was built by a master craftsman, decorated by artists and simply exudes a peace and serenity which should lead to nights of romance and passion.

Go...enjoy! and then write your review!
