When you see the sign in the parking area that says it's a half mile hike and it's difficult, believe it. You'll start thinking, "this isn't so bad!". And then you'll start heading downhill and wonder if you read the sign right. You did...the end of the downhill part leads you to an overlook of Dead Man's Cove. A beautiful little hidden beach that is unfortunately owned by the US government...lol. Along the way you'll also see the coast guard station.
After Dead Man's cove, you'll round a corner and find yourself on a paved roadway...headed straight up. It's a Coast Guard service road so watch for vehicles coming and going. It seems like a long, long uphill climb (especially of you're not in great shape!)...and it is. But I promise, it's worth it!
The views from the top are just beautiful! It seems like you can see forever (on a clear day, which lucky for us the clouds burned off just as we got to the top!). And if you're not into nature, there might be a couple good looking Coast Guard guys manning the lighthouse station. ;)
On a side note, from below at the west end of the North Jetty, I was treated to seeing some sea lions diving and poking their heads up in the bay. I was like a little girl, giddy about seeing them!
Be prepared with some water for the hike to the lighthouse and don't forget the camera!
