View the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse from the North Jetty Road. There are picnic tables and restrooms. After that, if you still want to get a closer view, you can take the road to the lighthouse parking lot and climb the hill to see it.

Yes, you have to have your Discover Pass or pay $10 to park to see the lighthouse. Yes, it's another $5 to walk through the Lewis and Clark Interpretive center. Yes, it's 3/4 of a mile hike from the center to the lighthouse itself...but seriously, you can't put a price on history and you will never regret having taken the time to see both the North Head Lighthouse and the Cape Lighthouse, as well as visiting the North Jetty and Beard's Hollow lookout.

We took our 4 year old on a hike to Cape Disappointment Lighthouse last week. She loved tromping through the woods. We had to go slow at some points (steep trail, a bit muddy), but it was fine. Tennis shoes are a must. A bottle of water was a welcome addition, too. Quite a few bugs and a lot of mosquitoes, so long sleeves and pants would be great. The last hill before the lighthouse was the hardest, but the view made it worthwhile. The whole hike (with a little one in tow) took less than an hour.

After touring the North Head Light, just drive around the corner to Cape Disappointment light....another dramatic day nearer to the mouth of the Columbia River. We loved that there were 2 lighthouses so near each other. Don't miss this!

The walk to the lighthouse is a good hike, and it is hilly, so if health is an issue, plan to take some time. It's a beautiful hike. About 1/2 way from the parking lot to the lighthouse is Deadman's Cove. You cannot get down to the beach, but the view from above is stunning!

The final hill climb to the lighthouse is steep one, so again, consider your health, and wear good shoes. From the top, you will see the Columbia River delta where the river and ocean get acquainted. On a good day, you may spot some seals or whales from here. The lighthouse itself is managed by the US Coast Guard, and is in a bad state of repair. On our visit, it was actually closed - roped off, and we were not even able to go to the edge of the bluff to get a good view. It was a terrible disappointment and anti-climactic end to our hike up the hill.

As mentioned in a related review, pass on the Interpretive center. It has some fun stuff for the kids, but is a bit of a disappointment for adults.
