Surfside Resort is a timeshare condo property available also for rental without timeshare and has been like a comfortable old shoe to our family for the past 15 years. It was probably built in the sixties and had become a typical weather-beaten plain vanilla small town ocean resort with white paint and indoor-outdoor carpet in the outside corridors. So when Worldmark took over and gave it a fancy exterior facelift, put in an elevator and classy lobby, we felt it lost part of it's charm. And, although the rooms are much the same as always, I understand that by 2016 the rooms should be upgraded as well, and probably the rates too! In the meantime, if you are looking for a place to let the kids run around and just relax, don't mind clean but dated bathrooms and kitchens, the FUN is still to be had!
Here's what you will appreciate: A one-bedroom unit with a pull-out sofa (sometimes a 2 bedrm might be available); a fully equipped kitchen; a location even more out of the way than Long Beach; a playground; an indoor/outdoor pool (in a separate building by the playground); DVD and VCR players in the bedroom and living room; excellent storage space - a very roomy kitchen closet for your food and equipment and another closet in the living room; two nice-sized bathrooms; a 9-hole golf course across the parking lot with free rental clubs for a round of golf; a gourmet sandwich shop in the parking lot (lunch hours); 24 hour concierge; DVD's for rent - $3 per day; ocean view all second and third story rooms; first floor rooms face the ocean and may not have a view but are great for children as the rooms open to a grass yard; an elevator; a small gift shop; a quick-stop essentials store across the street; new furniture in the last couple years; bbq grills on the balcony-decks; a short walk across the street and through the dunes to the Pacific Ocean; short driving distance to historic Oysterville, Leadbetter State Park, Jack's Country Store, Long Beach shops, Ilwaco where fresh fish comes in daily, Cape Disappointment, a fantastic bridge that leads to Astoria, Oregon, and more.
Here's what you may not appreciate: Just adequate TV's; WiFi is sometimes spasmodic and weak and costs $15.00 for ten days or $5 per day; limited cell phone coverage (Verizon is most reliable and used by the locals); a small workspace in the kitchen, (but better than camping, for sure!); dated interior finishes; one-sit-down restaurant in the town of Ocean Park, otherwise a great array of eateries in Long Beach, 25 minutes away.
I definitely recommend. My rating is based on my preferences, not what other travelers may prefer :-)
