“Best Hotel in Ocean Shores”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2008

MY boyfriend and I spent a Saturday night here over New Years Weekend. We booked a one bedroom with an ocean view on the 3rd floor. We got a great deal, $130 with all the taxes! We were travelling with my boyfriend's sister and her husband, they had an ocean front room (ground floor, by the pool) for $90 including tax. Not a bad deal at all!

The rooms are great, really nice little kitchens, everything is spic and span and clean. Big flat screen tvs in the rooms, and big bedrooms with tvs in them as well.

Our room had a little balcony and a gorgeous view of the beach. You can walk to the beach on from the hotel, there is a trail from the pool.

One of our favorite things was the wine & cheese reception they had on Saturday night. From 4-5pm, they had complimentary for guests, 3 different kinds of wine, cheese, salami, grapes, etc. It was a fun time to have a glass of wine and socialize with the other guests.

The pool and hot tub were fabulous. Pool is heated warm enough to swim in, even in December, not cold at all. The hot tub can fit about 5 adults, and is also very nice. We each took a drink to the hot tub and sat in there and socialized and drank and nobody gave us any trouble.

I can't think of a single bad thing to say about the hotel. Check in time is 3 or 4pm too, and we got there at 8am, and our room was ready and they let us in. The customer service was great.

A few warnings about Ocean Shores:

Beware of the Shilo Inn's restaurant. It was so disgusting. Canned clam chowder and rude service. And $$$$$!!!

The Ocean Shores bowling alley was fun

Beware of Dugan's pizza. They literally put less than a handful of cheese on an entire large pizza, it was disgusting. Also, while we were there, a customer came in and said that he ordered a 6 pack of rootbeer that he never got, and they argued with him for 10 minutes, telling him he had no "proof" instead of giving him the rootbeer. What ever happened to the customer being right?

This sounds gross, but if you DO want pizza, the bowling alley has the best pizza in town. No joke. It's pretty damn good.

If you're going to rent a moped in the winter, bundle up!! Even if it's not freezing outside, with the wind and water on one of those mopeds you will freeze to death!

Have a great time! You will not be disappointed with the Grey Gull! If you are staying in the winter though, make sure and call them and verify their pool and hot tub aren't undergoing maintenance, since that is the star attraction.

When we arrived in Ocean Shores I was a bit surprised - it was a bit like an old seaside town from the sixties! However it's quirkiness makes it unique - the same can be said for the GG!

If you want a modern, sterile box to stay in then this isn't for you. If however you want a large room, with a full kitchen, comfy sitting room, stunning ocean view and comfortable king size bed then I suggest you book room 503. Yes, the place is a little dated but the staff couldn't have been friendlier and our stay couldn't have been more pleasant.

There is internet access in the little lobby area and other amenities but you are there for the beach - which is just wonderful. Get up early and have the place to yourself (just remember to get the kite flying on the beach so you know where abouts to get back to the hotel through the grass and dunes!)

Our room was clean and well maintained. I wish now I had booked it for more than one night. And if you get the chance try a pizza from Duggan's - best pizza we've ever had - EVER!

My husband and I just return from Ocean Shores, We stayed at this hotel just by chance and were very pleased with the service and room. We had a 3rd floor Dlx 1 bedroom. The room had a fully equipped kitchen, large Lvg room, gas fireplace and the best view of the ocean we have seen in a long time. The bedroom had 2 queen beds and a slider door that also went out onto the balcony. The Staff was wonderfull! The next time we're back in Ocean Shores we'll be staying at The Grey Gull.

The Grey Gull is a fine property with all the amenities needed for a great mini get away. I stayed there with 2 of my kids this past week and we enjoyed what we found. The room was comfortable and roomy enough for all of us. The view of the beach dunes and ocean beyond was lovely. We used the kitchen for snack storage mainly, but I did enjoy making coffee every morning before we ventured out.

I found it to be quiet after 10 p.m. without fail, and the staff was helpful and courteous. I liked the pool area - it was just right for the youngest to use even when it wasn't terribly warm out.

For Ocean Shores, it was a great find - almost like having a house but centrally located and easy access to the beach on foot. The walk was enjoyable and the trail well maintained. All in all, we loved our stay there.

  • Liked — View and space for all of us
  • Disliked — Nothing comes to mind - no complaints!

The Grey Gull is pretty par for the course in Ocean Shores.

The good: It does feel pretty homey, and the staff is very friendly.
The room was spacious, and the kitchen, DVD/VCR, and gas fireplace were great. The bed was maybe a 5 out of 10 for comfort. The view over the dunes and to the ocean is very nice.

The Not-So-Good: The walls are paper thin. There are signs everywhere
asking you to please walk quietly, and they're needed, sounds carry very well here. The pool and hot-tub are feels old, and the water in the hot-tub is green, even though the hot-tub is white. I couldn't
quite explain that.

Having visited a few spots on the Northwest Coast - I doubt I'll be back to Ocean Shores. I'd go to Seaside or Cannon Beach in Oregon - 1
extra hour in the car from Seattle would be well worth it.

Stayed in #301 this past weekend, first night was quiet, but wow the next night was super noisy. The walls are really, really thin in the bedroom and we could hear voices clearly and also in the hallway. The hallway has a slider with a lock on it, and if anyone is in the hallway next door you can hear every word. The people in the adjacent room #302 kept trying to open the slider which scared the heck out of us at midnight!! I called to compain about the noise and no one is at the front desk from 10pm-8am. The phone rang and rang....I was told that the answering machine would come on the next morning when I told someone at the front desk about the noise problem, but it never came on. The customer service at the front desk was ok, not super friendly, not mean, but definently not willing to go out of their way to make the guest happy..... The condo itself is big and roomy. The condo was $195- a night before taxes.

We stayed in a standard one-bedroom condo at this property on July 6, 2007 (Unit #206).

We have stayed in most of the motels in Ocean Shores and two other condos, and this is by far the most pleasing.

We had a balcony with great view of the pool, grounds, and the ocean beyond.

Our living room had floor to ceiling windows, a good-sized seating area, a dining area, a gas fireplace (that worked perfectly), and a TV.

There was a complete and fully equipped kitchen and a descent sized bathroom with plush towels.

The bedroom had a very comfortable king bed, a dresser, two nightstands, and a large closet.

The only deficiencies we noted were a couple stains on the carpet, one window pain that sometimes sweat, and a refrigerator that was noisy when it started up and would have disturbed anybody sleeping the living room (but nobody was sleeping there).

The summer rate is $169. We received a 10% AAA discount and, with tax, the unit was $167.87--a very good value for Ocean Shores.

The next time we stay at the Grey Gull I hope to book a deluxe one-bedroom, which is $195 before the 10% discount.
