There aren't many old, impressive buildings in the west. 100 years ago Olympia was mostly dirt roads, so this amazing marble building from the 20s is really something to see if you are into history..
How did Washington get a building like this? After all, California and Nevada have a Capitol campus that looks like 1950s office buildings. Oregon's Capitol is nice enough. Private money is the answer. Some well to do locals wanted Olympia to the state capitol and decided that the best way to make that happen would be to build it. The proceeds from the Capitol Forest (their donation) still contributes money to the genteral fund. These guys had a real atraction to the classics, thus the domed capitol building and several local names such as Delphi Rd.

I just returned from touring the capitol building where I saw the marble walls, ceiling to floor, and was impressed that it had survived the great earthquake that lifted it off the ground and settled it back down with only damages that could be repaired. I got to see the legislature in session, and learned that they have an electronic scoreboard to record their ayes or nays in the Senate. I was impressed with our tour guide who lived through the earthquake, knew the names of the current leaders of both houses, the upcoming candidates for the Governor, etc. and could give the history of the capitol so eloquently. It was the most interesting tour I've ever had... and ended it by rubbing George Washington's statue's nose for good luck. I highly recommend you visit this place! And if you go in April you see cherry blossoms in bloom along the drive to the building. Also, the tourist information building is at the corner of the entrance and you can take a free shuttle down the main street to the Farmer's Market. I had lunch at the Oyster Bar, and highly recommend that restaurant to you for their oyster stew.
