“Great tour - not for kids”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

This is a great tour of the Governor's Mansion by seniors who volunteer at the mansion. To take a tour group, you need lots of advance planning and to submit all of your information in advance (I think they do background checks) - there are many rules on what you can bring. I did this tour in 2010 with a group of moms and kids and it was not appropriate for this age group. I thought it would be interesting going without kids. The volunteers had all of their information memorized and could not cater it to the audience. Plus the tour was long, at least an hour. It is a beautiful home though and definitely a good place to visit.

“A tour of History”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

We just did the tour and really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful building on wonderful grounds. The exterior of the mansion is something to see and then to glimpse the history from inside is just a treat. We felt honored to be there.

“Decorated for Christmas”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

We booked a large party to tour the mansion during the holiday season. It's nice to see that this historic building has been preserved! Recommeded, especially for children so you can throw in a lesson about government.

“Great (Free) Tour For The Whole Family”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

Having been born and raised in Olympia, it's easy to overlook local tourist attractions. I thought it would be good for the kids (ages 10, 13 and 14) and me to experience this tour. Scheduling a tour was simple. Tours are offered on Wednesdays, and you can schedule it via email: tours@des.wa.gov.

All people over the age of 18 are required to provide IDs upon arrival, children are not. When scheduling, you will need to give the legal name of all people on the tour. The day before the tour, both my sisters decided to come, and a simple e-mail ensured they were added to the list.

Parking was easy, although you have to pay to park on campus ($1.50 per hour). The registration desk is right next to the gift shop (signs direct you as you approach the capitol), and they ask you to arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour's scheduled time.

The docents that facilitate the tour are all very well informed and do a great job. The governor's private quarters are off-limits (obviously) but you are allowed to go in their private family room. Which has the governor's own furniture, pictures, and décor that changes with each administration.

There are some great things to see, incredible history to learn, and it's a beautiful campus to explore.

Purses are allowed, but no photography of any kind. Bins are provided if you have any bags larger than a purse.

Definitely check out this beautiful piece of Olympia's history.

“Interesting View into the Life of a Governor”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

The tour was well done by some very nice volunteers of the Governor's Mansion Foundation. The tour consists of most of the mansion besides the Governor's private quarters. It includes a lot of history from former Governors as well as the current Governor. It is a great way to complete a tour of the Capitol.

Tours need to be scheduled in advance and are only done on select days. However it is worth it!
