“Fabulous small Superb small inn and world-class restaurant.”

We just spent four days at the Inn at Ship Bay. The rooms were spacious and beautifully appointed and looked out onto East Sound. Bald eagles soared overhead along with other sea birds. The real news is the restaurant. Chef Geddes Martin is a world-class chef with a superb menu and with each dish beautifully presented. Since there are an abundance of things to do on Orcas (hike, bicycle, whale watch, sea kayak), it was an enormous pleasure to return to the inn each day and look forward to a gourmet meal. Breakfast is served on the terrace each morning: a family recipe granola, fresh fruit, freshly baked breads and muffins and the requisite tea and coffee. We cannot wait to return!

I have stayed at the inn on a couple of different occasions and have been extemely pleased. The room are well appointed. I also stayed at what imaybe considered the most exclusive place on the islands and was much more pleased with the Inn at Ship Bay. All the employees were very friendly and cordial. When I made reservations the second time, they knew right off who I was. And the restaurant is excellent-probably the best place on the island. I have definately recommended other to stay there.

We recently (June 2004) stayed at the Inn at Ship Bay on Orcas Island and we had a great time. The weather was perfect and the view from the Inn is as beautiful as they come. The Inn is perched on a bluff overlooking a bay and we saw eagles soaring above the beach every day. The complimentary breakfast was excellent every day. The Inn keeper, Luke is the best manager of any hotel or Inn in the USA - bar none. As soon as we arrived at the Inn, Luke gave us a tour of the facility and told us about a hike to the summit of Mount Constitution, which we hiked. The Moran State park, which is about 3 miles away has lots of beautiful trails and is like Colorado at sea-level. We ate dinner in the Inn and I give it a 5 star rating. The Inn's owner, Geddes, is also the head chef and all of the islanders go there for dinner.
We highly encourage anyone thinking of staying on Orcas Island to consider staying at the Inn at Ship Bay. We hope to return some day. Also check out the whale watching - the best tour boat is Island Expedition - Captain Dan and his boat were featured in Free Willy 2. We will never forget our experience on Orcas and the friends we made at the Inn at Ship Bay! Our hat is off to Luke who made this trip very special.
The rooms at the Inn are well laid out and very nicely decorated. Try and reserve the suite, which is perfect for a family of four.

After reading reviews about the various hotels (originally we were planning on staying at Rosario) we gave the Inn at Ship Bay a shot. We were not disappointed. The rooms are nicely decorated and immaculate. The bed rivals the Westin's "Heavenly Bed". The in-room refrigerator is stocked with complementary sodas and bottled water. The view from our balcony was spectacular. Lots of nice little touches for about $150 a night.

The innkeeper who checked us in gave us the lay of the land and then was off. My wife and I have stayed at some of these smaller places before and have had to deal with owners who are always under foot wanting to talk. We go on these little get-aways to be together, not to sit around and engage in lengthy discussions with the owners (or other guests). The benefit here is that you get the cosiness of a bed and breakfast without having to deal with the communal dining experience.

The dinner was exceptional both in the quality and diversity of the choices. The server who took care of us was very busy, but never left us for long. She seemed to anticipate our needs and made the experience a joy.

I would highly recommend staying here if you plan to visit Orcas!

My husband and I have stayed at the Ship Bay Inn twice. The rooms are lovely, nicely decorated, quiet and warm. Spectacular view of the bay since the Inn sits on a high bluff directly on the water. The restaurant offers delicious food and we highly recommend the large, succulent mussels... Overall, it was OK. The service and innkeepers, however, are a little on the chilly side. Don't expect any warm fuzzies from any of the staff. If you are expect to check out on a Sunday morning, don't expect anyone to be around to give you a "So nice to meet you. Thank you for Staying with Us". Considering that it was our second stay, even a small demonstration of appreciation would have been appropriate. If you don't care about something so seemingly trivial, this is the place for you! We'll be staying elsewhere next time.

We didn't actually sleep at this lovely 14-unit inn (built in 2000), but we did have a wonderful dinner in their restaurant the third week of March. After we finished eating in the dining room which has views of Ship Bay, we asked to see a guest room. We were quite impressed by the cleanliness and charm of the room which included a private balcony with an unobstructed water view and a beautiful comforter on the bed.
We were told that the midweek winter rate was $100 per night and included breakfast.

The waitstaff as well as the host who showed us the room were very accomodating and friendly with a professional level of service.

We were sorely disappointed that we had booked two nights at Rosario Resort, just a mile down the road, instead of at Inn at Ship Bay. The next time we come to Orcas Island, we know where to stay!
