Owner description: Jefferson Museum of Art & History is located in Port Townsend's historic City Hall building. The Museum features award-winning exhibits that display our unique cultural history of Maritime, Native American, and Early Settler life throughout its multiple galleries. The historic courtroom is now a rotating art gallery, displaying the works of noted artists. Once Port Townsend's Fire Hall, Courtroom, Jail and Police Station in the late 1800s, the building itself has many stories to tell! During the summer, the Museum offers historic walking tours of our beautiful Victorian seaside city. The Jefferson County Historical Society also operates the historic Rothschild House as well as the Commanding Officers Quarters at Fort Worden which are open to the public from May through September.

“Docent Mr.Stevens wealth of information”

Inexpensive with 2-3 attraction package price of only $6-9. Went to this museum and Rothschild home and lived them both. Combination of fact and fanciful exhibits. Jail...Sin City....City Development and history.

“Nice Museum, but small”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

Nice historic building with 9 minute historic video. Small old time jail is kind of cool as is the old fire dept. pieces. Some nautical and good historic photos and time line. Gift store not really pertinent to history displayed. Very limited hours and $4 admission.

“Fun and Informative”

Allow about one hour to two hours to fully explore this museum. Don't miss the old jail in the basement - creepy and grim.

“Step back into Jefferson County's history”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

The curator at the museum was very friendly and helpful. He gave me a detailed map of the museum, suggesting sights to pay special attention to. One room contained a big screen tv which was showing a very interesting 10 minute program on the early development of Jefferson county. The museum is home to a fair amount of historical artifacts, including pictures, letters, and a historical timeline. In addition, they have a a taxi and a hearse which were drawn by horses and used in Port Townsend a hundred years ago. Both are in remarkable condition. The old jail is in the basement and there you will find dreary jail cells, the solitary confinment cell and shackles for the prisoners. This part, especially, is interesting for kids of all ages!

“Great museum in a great building!”

Perfect building for a museum and very nice exhibits. But the best part was Mr. Stevens who was very knowledgeable and interesting to talk to! A gem and a credit to the town, we learned a lot about local history from him!! Great job Mr. Stevens!!
