We stayed in room 16 on the third floor, the second set of stairs look as if they are about to fall off the wall. The front windows of this room have Plexiglas over them, the beds were either rock hard or very warn out.
The furnishings seem to have been thrift store finds or maybe alley way treasure, the chair in the main room was unusable (for fear it would break) none of the furniture really matched. This room could sleep 6 but the table only seats 4. This room has a kitchen, the refrigerator smells horrible, the flat ware is cheap and the plate don't even match, to top it off it is only a set for 4 persons, we have a family of 5 . The cookware is SERIOUSLY lacking 1 10" pan and a 1qt pot cooking utensils look like they are garage sale throwaways. The room was "clean" other than the cobwebs in the corners. The master bed room had a hole in the window sill that let cold air in, I understand this building was built in 1889, and maybe they are still working on it, everything just felt as if very little effort was put into it, this place could be AMAZING, but unfortunately it fell flat.

Bottom line, for the price you could find something better.

We found the hotel in the phone book and called to get a room, we were warned up front the hotel is over a bar with live music that night but the price was right.

Normally our family stays at Starwood/Hilton properties. First impression, we were quite worried, the lady that runs the art gallery/gift store handles the phones and check ins. She was incredibly sweet but it caused me some concern because I was pretty sure she would be leaving at some point. and what would we do without a front desk clerk? Plus for a $58 room it can make you a little nervous.

We were offered the suite with a king bed, kitchen & fireplace for $75 and considering the blustery day it sounded great. After being given our key we climbed the stairs to the second floor and I revisited my staunch denial in the existance of ghosts. We got to our room and I was totally charmed.

There are no phones in the room but the ceiling was at least 12' high. The windows stretch from 2' off the floor to the ceiling even! The furniture could have been 100% thrift store finds but it was all immaculately clean. Our room was directly over the bar but the music really wasn't that loud and I only noticed the band starting and dropped off to sleep soundly the entire night.

The room was absolutely amazing, it had a king size bed with a gas woodstove/fireplace. A day bed with a trundle and a separate mini room with a loft queen bed. Almost made us feel guilty about leaving the children behind, but we got over it quickly. The bathroom was a modern bath, I guess the matching room to ours on the 3rd floor has a clawfoot tub. We had a porch overlooking the water with a picnic table and swing, bummer the weather was so yucky.

Every part of the room, the kitchen, the bedding, the bathroom was very clean. Yes, it is an old building but there was no peeling paint or mildew at all. There are no phones in the room but the wireless internet had a full signal and our cells had good coverage (which has been really hit and miss in this town). There is a coffee room for the guests in the hallway along with a phone.

All in all, a very nice deviation from the ordinary. For the price, this was an excellent room. Location couldn't be beat. I am looking forward to returning in the summer so we can enjoy the porch. What a great little gem.

It's important to note that this hotel is above a bar and so it can be loud. The noise did not bother us at all. We stayed in a room with a kitchen and a view from the bedroom which was actually quite nice. The beds were comfortable and the room, while old, was clean. The entire hotel is old so it creaks, slants, has dark wood and a ghostly feel which is part of the charm. We didn't use the kitchen and the bathroom was older but clean. The carpet was brown but looked new. The place was light filled from the ceiling to floor windows. Our experience with the reception was nice. This is not an expensive hotel whatsoever and is in fact, cheap. It is also a perfect location for Port Townsend if you plan to walk the shops, hit the restaurants or bars and just hang out. That was our reason for picking it and we were pleasantly surprised. It's no Ritz but if you know that going in and can appreciate the price for the location I think it's worthwhile.

My husband and I have stayed at the Water Street Hotel for six years now. We LOVE it! Anyone looking for a 5-star hotel with all the glitz, this place is not for you. But if you're seeking clean, comfortable, friendly accommodations, this is the place! From the moment Mary greets you in the quaint reception area until you leave this beautiful old building, you will not be disappointed. Yes, the building lacks some modern conveniences (no elevator; some rooms with shared bath) but the character and atmosphere make up for it. And let's not forget the economical price. All in all, a great place to stay. We'll be back this Fall!

The bar on the first floor will play loud music until midnight. After they close, bar patrons are loud and rude. There are lots of places to stay in PT, but I wouldn't recommend this one. Hotel owners need to decide if they are going to cater to people in the hotel or people in the bar; the two are not compatable!
