This was only the second experience at a B&B for my husband and me. It was such a warm and comfortable stay. Gail and Jim were wonderful hosts. The room was very clean, cozy and comfortable. We loved falling to sleep to the sound of the ocean. The gourmet breakfasts were such a treat. If all B&B's were this nice, we would never stay at hotels again!

My wife and I spent three days at the Commanders' Beach House in October, 2012. The house sits right on the water. I spent mornings before day light sitting on the front porch sipping coffee and listening to waves and sea gulls.

Our second floor room had terrific views of the water. We spent one morning sitting by the windows reading. Other days we explored the town and Fort Worden Park. The breakfasts were amazing. We're vegetarian and Gail serve exquisite vegetarian fare just for us. Over all it was outstanding. Superlative!

Room Tip: The Light House Room and the Sunflower Room have fantastic views of the water.

Stayed one night in October and loved it. Location is great and Jim & Gail made us feel at home. We definitely plan to stay when we're in the area again. Thanks to Jim & Gail for donating a night for a Port Townsend Play School fund raiser that our grandson Owen attends because if we had not bid on it for the fund raiser, who knows when we would have discovered it! Breakfast was great too! Pat & Frank from Wisconsin

During our previous trip to Port Townsend a couple of years ago, we knew that we wanted to return, specifically to stay at The Commander's Beach House, which we had walked past on the beach and noted its location with great interest. Not only is the inn facing the ocean, with expansive views of distant shores and ever-changing boat traffic (even a submarine) but also it's within a very short, level walk to the fascinating shops and most of the incredibly numerous, varied, and delicious restaurants of Port Townsend (Alchemy Bistro--yes!). On the way, near the little marina, a watchful person might spot some river otters! In the heat of a late July afternoon, we undertook the uphill trek to the shopping district at the top of the cliff, a hike which turned out not to be neither as arduous nor as distant as we had thought. The drive from the inn to the far end of town for dinner at Manresa Castle (yum!) took only minutes. When we first recognized The Commander's Beach House two years ago, we utterly failed to notice the adjacent trailer park. Driving past that property on our arrival this year we were worried about possible late night partying people and all-day barking dogs. Even though nearly every site was occupied and dogs large and small were visible, we didn't hear a thing from there at any time of day! At the end of our first evening as we strolled back to the Beach House from dinner in town, we noticed shoulder-to-shoulder sea gulls settled down for the night on the roof crown of a long building a couple of streets over. Having heard a great deal of gull-bickering in town during the late afternoon and early evening, we dreaded their starting up again at the crack of dawn. Well, they didn't! And the roads that run behind the inn apparently aren't popular routes, so traffic noise of any kind was non-existent; certainly, no buses stopping and starting or trucks rumbling by. As for Gail and Jim--such warm and helpful hosts, always attentive to guests' questions and needs. Coffee was available early and Gail's breakfast creations were absolutely delicious to the palate and pleasing to the eye. Her menus were not pretentious and portions were not excessive. Jim readily joined the lively discussions. One day, guests were offered a dinner feast of crab--barely out of the ocean--+ the necessary side dishes + beer/wine for a reasonable price. A good part of the charm of this historic building, which it must be remembered is Gail and Jim's home, lies in the displays of art on walls and eclectic curios throughout. These hosts also went about their normal daily lives; it was pleasant to observe them in their native habitat, not solely taken up with business. Altogether, an enjoyable stay in The Commander's Beach House--perfectly located.

Room Tip: The Island View Room, which we stayed in for 2 nights, was perfectly adequate, and even though we kn...

As if it wasn't enough just to return to our favorite Port Townsend to photograph and explore it's charm, we had the greatest of good fortunes to reserve a room at the Commander's Beach House. Gail and Jim made us feel immediately that we were honored guests and we found that nothing was missing to make this stay memorable. We could have spent our whole two days just in this fabulous place. The taste and presentation of the breakfasts was flawless and wishing Gail would write a breakfast cookbook. Beds were extremely comfortable and we slept like babies in the quiet house. Two blocks from the heart of town made a car unnecessary. I especially loved browsing through the common areas looking at the antiques and all the colorful and unique knick-knacks. Go visit. You will want to return often.

Room Tip: We stayed in two different rooms. Both were beautiful and yet different. I love it so much there t...

Great location close to the community theater, downtown, and Hudson Point. Jim and Gail made us feel welcome and comfortable and were accommodating of our shifting plans. We were in the Island View room with its gorgeous view of the sound and loved the maritime sounds and smells. Breakfasts were top notch.

Six of us gathered for our yearly reunion of some Berkeley class mates in October and loved every minute of our stay. Gail and Jim are extraordinary hosts and the setting, breakfasts and bedrooms were absoluteluy first rate. We hope to return and would heartly recommend the Commander's Beach House. The house resident golden lab,Cutter, added to the ambience. We will return!

Room Tip: We loved the light house room.
