K-Diamond-K Guest Ranch
Reviewed 12 July 2010

I came to K Diamond K with some girlfriends in the late spring with no idea of what to expect of a working ranch vacation. We were first guests in the new lodge which was quite nice and comfortable. The family who run this ranch were all very accomodating and happy to let us participate in ranch life.
Each day we rode horses through the most beautiful country, usually riding in the morning and again in the afternoon. We each got our own horse for the week and were able to groom them.
We got to see a newborn foal and some baby goats, we drove cattle into other pastures, drove thru the woods to learn all about trees and the timber industry. Hiked a bit, went fly fishing , visited the fossil mine in town. We were even taken to a lake nearby to fish by one of the cooks. We road deep into the woods and had a picnic lunch up near a pond.
Food was plentiful and good, served family style ( we were usually asked if we had any preferences for meal selections) Each night the kitchen staff left some sweet snacks for us in case we got hungry. Alcohol is not provided, but they have no problem with you bringing your own. (side note : there are lots of great wineries in Washington state)
This is a working ranch and you can do as little or as much as you'd like to do. Overall it was a great experience and we wished we had more time to spend there.
We intend to return, next time bringing the kids along, and perhaps for a family reuinion.
This isn't the type of place where your itinerary of activities is scheduled for you.... you have to give them some idea of what you want to do and they most graciously will work to make it happen.

"Howdy!" My name is Pearl Mance and I was blessed to be able to visit the K Diamond K Guest Ranch with my granddaughter at the old age of 84! Since visiting, I have been to the ranch two more times and have loved each visit.
During my stay, I went fishing in the creek down in the meadow with Stevie, the grandson of the ranch, got to visit the various farm animals and pet deer on the property and was so blessed with three very tasty meals each night.
My first visit was during the fall and my last visit was over the Christmas holiday. The Konz and McKay family was so gracious to open up their lodge to my family during Christmas and we enjoyed watching the grandkids open their Christmas presents.
Thank you for another great vacation....I can't wait tocome back!

We were so excited to stay at this guest ranch. The owners daughter Kathy was very personable and lowered the rate so my best friend and I could bring all 6 kids to stay for 2 nights.
After a 6 hour drive we were happy to finally arrive. The area is beautiful, but the service was the worst ever. We paid $1500 for 2 nights of what we thought would be fun activities for everyone. We were asked when we arrived ( once I found someone in charge. Noone was acknowledging guests when we entered even though they were sitting at a table by the entrance) what things we wanted to do. We told them we wanted to ride horses, fish, hike, explore the fossil mine and what ever else they had to do. We were told we could do all of that. We rode horses ( they only got 6 ready and there were 8 of us) for 20 minutes in a corall. From that point on we were asked 5 or 6 times what we would like to do and when we told someone they would say "OKAY" and then wouldn't see them again for another hour and they would act like we never had a previous conversation. They would ask again what we wanted to do and again they would leave us high and dry.

Dinner was at 6:00. By a little after 7:00 without a word ( never an update on dinner and when it would actually come) we were fianlly fed. We thought because they were getting ready for the weekend that things would soon get back on track. Another family arrived (it was just them and us not too many people to take care of) and they were asking us where to go and what to do and who was in charge. They too were having the same experience as us. We all ended up at the bonfire where we were asked again if we wanted to do something. They suggested making smores. Once again, We agreed. After over an hour we went in the the kitchen ourselves and asked for items to make smores and for sticks for the marshmellows. 45 minutes later and numerous requests finally brought an employee who wanted to see if we "WANTED TO DO ANYTHING" I told her everyone asks that and then noone does anything about it. She said " Sorry to say That is just the way it is around there, but if you want anything done around here YOU have to do it yourself" Did I mention we paid $1500?? We finally went to bed after being there 9 hours and some of us rode a horse for 20 minutes! The next day has to be better???
Noone who worked there knew the time for Breakfast. They said Around 7. My son needs medication so I was there at 7 sharp. By 7:30 there was still no breakfast started. I went and made my own and my sons. I came back at 8 and there was someone just starting to put food on the grill. My niece waited 15 minutes with an empty plate and asked twice for food before I got up and got it for her myself.

We were not asked at all that morning if we wanted to do anything and it was our last day :( We talked as a group AND decided to leave. We packed our luggage and left. The owners daughter Kathy even held the door open for us ( w/ our luggage)to leave without asking where we were going. We drove the 6 hours home.
At 9pm that evening I got a call from Kathy ( 12 hours after we left) Saying she was upset that they treated us bad and that she wanted me to call her so she could make it right. Once I called her she apologized and said she knew we were very neglected and I did not have to tell her a thing about what happened. She said she knew all the things that went on. Really, she did not want to hear any of it. I did however tell her of our disappointment and many of the things that she did not know even happened. She was especially shocked to know she held the door open for us as we left and didn't even notice. Come on, a Guest ranch with 11 guests and she can not keep them straight?

She offered for us to come and stay again for free and she would give me my entire amount paid back. Wow, that sounded nice , but I knew we would never go back. This was not a one time mishap. This was a way they ran their business. One mistake maybe two could easily be overlooked. But 20, 30?? I have left out numerous things. I could really give you an earfull.

So at least we would be getting our $$ back. Because they proved to be full of talk and no action I was not surprised that I had to call her 5 times over the next 30 days to ask about my refund. Her answer every time was that she forgot. Finally, she refunded $1000, not the $1500 as promised. She said $500 she had decided to keep for the nights stay , for the dinner we had and the breakfast we made ourselves.

So sad of a Summer vacation for the kids. We will never go back and have told numerous people to not waste their money on this awful place.

We spent four days at the K<>K ranch. A family group of adults, teeenage boys and ten year old daughter.
We hoped to have some down time together, do some riding and hiking.
The present guest ranch was built recently and rooms are roomy and comfortable. We had a room with three twins for the children, others with queen and twin. There is also a big room with a king and 2 (3?) twins, ideal for a family. There are more rooms I did not see downstairs. We had a lovely balcony outside our room.
There is a big common area downstairs with two big fireplaces, plenty of comfy seating, tables and chairs, pool table etc. Upstairs is another area which is more peaceful (although downstairs was certainly not noisy when we were there). There is a big deck for outside seating.
Kathy and her husband Brian, work incredibly hard to ensure everyone has a good time and does what they want to do. Kathy's parents started the ranch in the 60's and still live there, her father, Steve spent a lot of time talking with us (and especially paid attention to the boys who he sent of with a challenge to investigate the old Gold Mine on the property) and telling us about life as a rancher. Dr June (Kathy's mom) is a practicing vet with her practice on the property. She has 50 years experience and I was honored to spend some time watching her walk and chatting. Two brothers work on the ranch too.
Our ten year old had the time of her life. With Kathy's daughter as companion they ran around the property, feeding a fawn and kids, playing with dogs and rabbits and hours of grooming horses and riding out.
The horses are well looked after and sound.
We stacked hay, trail rode and the kids even helped herd cows on horseback.
We fished in the property's own trout stream (and our daughter caught a trout which was promptly cooked by the cook and served to her to her absolute delight).
We read books, sat around the campfire (entertained by a wonderful singer one night) and played poker.
You can be as involved or uninvolved as you wish, there is no pressure to join in if you want to be quiet and read a book.
The ranch is in an idyllic position, in a valley just outside Republic, WA. It runs both sides of the valley and scope for hiking and riding on the steep hills and through forest is great. The surrounding area is stunning and the ride across the Columbia river on the ferry is fun (and free!)
Food is plentiful, home style and good.
There is WIFI downstairs (though I'm glad to say we were too busy and happy doing other things to use it much).
There is no alcohol but you can bring your own and store it in a fridge in the kitchen.
Republic is a small town about 3 miles away with a grocery store, drug store, bank, outfitter and several other small stores. There is a good small museum about fossils and you can dig for your own fossils on a cliff nearby.
Maybe it is so fabulous here because it is remote. It's a 6 hour drive from Seattle (we went via the stunning North Cascades Scenic Highway) or two from Spokane. Next time we'll fly to Spokane and drive from there.
I would recommend this ranch without hesitation.
We had a wonderful time and would love to go back for longer.
