“Much better than expected”
Reviewed 29 August 2011

Unfortunately we only stayed for 1 night. Everything was much better than we had expected from the web site. The room was very comfortable, the location really quiet, breakfast was very good and our host was very hospitable. We used it as a base to visit Mount Rainier (fantastic) which is abour 1hr 30min away.

It was the photo on the website for The Shepherd's Inn ( http://theshepherdsinn.com) that made us determined to see this green and leafy paradise for ourselves. The road through the woods convinced us we had made a great choice for a serene and peaceful setting, and the warm hospitality and spotless accommodations awaiting us at the end of the drive were just the icing on the cake. We had a well-appointed room with a view of the woods (and yes, Bambi did stroll by!). Our breakfast each morning was superb; those huckleberry crepes are world-class. The inn's location midway between Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier is ideal for touring both from the same home base, but allow a day for each. And don't miss the fine visitor center/observatory atop Mt St Helens! After a day of hiking or of jostling tourist crowds, The Shepherd's Inn, surrounded by woodland, is a perfect place to relax.
Travelers who crave excitement, crowds, noise, bright lights and endless nearby dining choices will not be happy here. . . but that's what city-center hotels are for. The Shepherd's Inn is a slice of heaven.

We planned to stay 3 nights and stayed 4! Ellen and Richard are great hosts and the atmosphere in the house with other guests over breakfast and evening treats was wonderful! Highly recommended!

Driving to the Shepherd's Inn, we were a bit worried that it would be OK, as it's out in the boonies. But we had few choices in this area between Mt Rainier and Mt St. Helens. We were greatly relieved to find the Shepherds Inn -- full middle-class comforts. I would go here again in a second.

Stayed here for just one night whilst touring around Washington and Oregon from the UK. Ellen and Richard are excellent hosts, like staying with friends and the breakfast was just superb. The drive to the house is longer than we expected and we had wondered if we'd taken a wrong turn but then came upon the lovely house.
Bedrooms have wi-fi and be sure to ask for local restaurant recommendations - we ate at a nearby Chinese restaurant where the meals were huge but Ellen had told us to just order one meal - she was right!

My friend and I stayed for a night at this wonderful place on the way to High Pass Challenge near Packwood, WA.

We reached late by about 8.30pm, and were greeted with a yummy Apricot pie. Since we were to leave by 5.30am, they arranged for breakfast so that we could hit the bikes without stopping elsewhere for breakfast.

A well-managed and homely place!

The Shepherd's Inn is a great place to stay and Ellen & Richard are great hosts. The rooms are wonderful, and so comfortable and clean. Breakfasts are to die for they are great cooks and you are served something different everyday. The Huckleberry Crepes are their specialty and don't forget to take the receipe home. They provide you with maps and directions and hints for Mt. St. Helen's and Mt. Rainier which are close by.

If you are in this area you can't go wrong in booking a stay at their lovely B&B.
