Iron Horse Inn Bed & Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 August 2010

On July 27, 2010 my wife and her friend from Japan stayed overnight at the
Iron Horse Inn Bed & Breakfast at 526 Marie Ave - PO Box 629 - South Cle Elum, WA 98943

The Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places, and cared for by Mary and Doug Pittis a husband and wife team that takes it very serious when it comes to making sure you are satisfied and happy with your visit.
Mary takes care of the guest, while Doug the chief cook and bottle washer, a graduate of the American Culinary School, whips up a delicious mouthwatering breakfast. Believe me you won’t go away hungry here.

The Inn itself is a historic building were the crews of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad and served until 1974 as temporary housing for men who had the job of getting trains over some of the most hazardous tracks in the country. Each of the rooms are named after a crew member that actually stayed there. The room décor are a little frilly for a man, however, all the room are extremely clean and smoke free.

This is the type of place, where you let the younger ones bicycle, very little traffic on the roads, and spend some time either reading a book or viewing the many historic pictures and antiques of the old railroad times, and there are many to see.

I stayed in the Inn, and the ladies opted to stay in one of the four cabooses, I think it will be the reverse the next time we stay there.

The Inn is on the web http://www.ironhorseinnbb.com/.

We've stayed here three times in the past five years, in three of the four cabooses. We would have stayed in the Northern Pacific caboose, but it has only a double bed due to its size.

Our favorites are the Milwaukee Road and Great Northern cabooses. The Southern Pacific caboose has a spa tub and handheld shower. I prefer the tub/shower combination in the GN caboose or the shower stall in the Milwaukee Road caboose. Also, the toilet was right out in the open in the SP caboose, with no privacy.

All cabooses have modern amenities, such as TV (albeit small), microwave and refrigerator. The private decks are nice, except it seems that it's always too hot, too cold or there are too many mosquitoes to sit out there.

The proprietors, Doug and Mary, are most gracious and hospitable. We're not really breakfast people, but the breakfast is one of the better features. Each day Doug offered a choice of two meals, and he does a great job in the kitchen. He even was able to accommodate my wife, who is allergic to most breakfast foods.

Normally we're not B&B people either, but we make an exception for the Iron Horse Inn.

In the Inn itself are quite a few rooms, including some with private bath.

Being railfans, we were pleased to be able to walk to the nearby restored Milwaukee Road depot/museum/cafe and interpretive trail. Unfortunately, the cafe was looking for a concessionaire to run it on our last visit.

My husband and I stayed at the B&B this last weekend. I chose this location after doing some research online. We arrived without reservations and were greeted with such warmness by the owner. After being given a tour of all the cabooses available I chose the Southern Pacific caboose. Our caboose was cozy, beautifully decorated, and had a wonderful whirlpool tub. Especially appreciated was the very clean atmosphere.

We very much enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful breakfast which I thought was delicous and filling. I hope to visit again.

Iron Horse B&B is a great idea, staying in real railroad boxcars. We enjoyed our stay but at $179 for one night it was very overpriced for the experience. We stayed in a boxcar, base price $139, but they charged an extra $20 per child (2 children). The kids stayed up in two bunk-like loft beds which we had to make up ourselves. They were delighted with it but it was an expensive little sleeping arrangement. The boxcar itself was stuffy, as no windows open except in the bathroom and the front door. Fans were a bit squeaky.

The breakfast was tasty but I'd have to say skimpy. 3 pancakes, or a breakfast taco, coffee, a small glass of juice or milk and two link sausages. They did ask if we'd like another order of pancakes, and brought 2 more.

The main house had games, books about the area, a piano, wine, and the owners were friendly, helpful as to where to eat in town, and kind. The property is adjacent to some historic railroad yards and fun to walk around.

I would have to say that we got taken on this one. At half the price it would have still been too-highly priced for the value delivered.
