“Excellent Customer Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2014

The Odell House management were extremely considerate of a travel error that I made in booking hotels in the Spokane area (another member of my group booked a hotel close to our destination in Coeur d'Alene at the same time I booked the Odell House). I had made my reservation at the Odell House in the afternoon of the day I was planning on staying there. When I called them asking to cancel because the other person in my group had booked another hotel, they were very considerate and cancelled my reservation without charge. That is service that one can not hope to expect from a chain hotel. A+ for that.

Thanks to this traveler for writing.
I hope another time we can keep them, but I wanted to note that we were happy to be flexible because it was such a reasonable request!
Sure, our policy says we do not cancel reservations withing 24 hours of check in. This assumes that we have held space for perhaps an extended period of time--with six units and no front desk or walk in clients, that's a big risk if an individual does not appear as promised.
But this very charming man held a reservation for perhaps less than an hour on a very crowded weekend when some lodging stress was understandable.
He said he's made other plans and we were fine with it.

"We" being the owners, bookers, book keepers, laundry slaves and ironing staff get to make these choices. Very happy to be of service and thank you for noticing. Your kind note made our day.
Cordially,
Ms. Dale and Mr. Rick.

My husband surprised me with a getaway to the Odell House B&B in Spokane. It was lovely! Really eclecticly furnished room, very comfortable and relaxing. There were fresh eggs left in the fridge and coffee, so we cooked ourselves breakfast and enjoyed it on the wraparound covered porch.
It's in a lovely neighbourhood, with some really funky restaurants within walking distance.
We'd definitely go again.

Room Tip: We stayed in suite "A" which was at the front of the house. It had a porch swing, table an...

I found the hosts to be horrible, rude people. The place was a dirty apartment with worn out furnishings. Just stay away from there. Do yourself a favor and seek a cleaner place with a lot less traffic with nice people. This place isn't it.

My husband and I stayed in Unit C for four nights. We had a wonderful time! The unit had a full size kitchen which was perfect because I was able to cook some of our meals to save us some money on dining out. The queen size bed was more comfortable than my bed at home! The sheets, comforter, and pillows were super soft and fluffy! Dale was a very gracious host. She is one of the nicest, down to earth, people I have ever met! We had fresh eggs from the chicken coop in the mornings as well as fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden. Dale gave us some tips on some great places to eat that were within walking distance. (I recommend the Elk House! Yum!) The house and the area were very quiet and the grounds are just beautiful! A very short distance to downtown. Another bonus is the gorgeous museum that is literally across the street. We will definitely be visiting the Odell House again! Absolutely Awesome! I highly recommend The Odell House to anyone staying in the Spokane area!

Room Tip: Unit C was very spacious and comfortable

Dale couldn't have been more helpful and the set up is fabulous. We had ground floor bedrooms, a bath and a small kitchen.decorated with beautiful things. The setting is in the historic Browns Addition, kitty corner from the Art and Culture Museum and Campbell House. We walked to a music fest and did people watching. Had breakfast at Jenny's and dinner at Wild Sage and The Davenport. What a wonderful way to celebrate our birthdays. Stayed Saturday and Sunday nights because we had tickets for Lily Tomlin's performance at the art deco Fox Theater. Am recommending this B&B to everyone.

Room Tip: first floor rooms the best. This is one of the only places in Spokane that has 2 beds rather than 1...

These guests were the most charming people--well traveled, fun and interesting. The unit they stayed in was the Gallery, which is our smallest unit, and yes, has two almost identical queen beds which is useful for some stays to be sure. Most of the units have a bigger kitchen than the Gallery, but a more formal one bedroom setup, then with dining/living room and kitchen. BUT, the second bed in many of these is not as good as the first, more of a futon situation. So if this is important, this is the unit to pick. We hope to have a repeat visit from these really great guests! Dale and Rick

My wife and I were driving across country and this place was really nice. They have an electric car charger, fresh eggs from chickens, and a wonderful host.

The neighborhood that the Odell house was really nice also. We walked down to a delicious Italian restaurant and ate on their porch in the nice weather.

This was listed as a B&B. We are B&B owners and we certainly know what qualifies as a B&B and that is it includes breakfast. This is more like a nice boarding house. Each unit has it's own kitchen - no breakfast served. Most of the drawers in our unit had somebody else's belongings in drawers. This is advertised as a "Green" echo friendly establishment. Organic soaps etc. were on the kitchen and bathroom counters, however I would NOT consider Soft Scrub, Clorox, etc. as echo-friendly green cleaning agents found under the sink in the kitchen.
We could recommend staying in this place as it is in a lovely part of Spokane and it was adequately furnished and clean. However, it is misleading to advertise it as a Bed and BREAKFAST and green, echo friendly. It was also creeping having someone else items in drawers. This was misleading.

Room Tip: Just come prepared to fix your own breakfast or go out to breakfast - false advertising.

Though it is always hard to get a negative review, I wanted to thank Maureen for helping to make public an issue that is happening in Spokane right now and may continue across the country. It has to do with short term lodging and how it is regulated. We are indeed licensed as a Bed and Breakfast. We have been so since 1998.

There are many illegal offerings on the market today and we stress our licensing to differentiate us from the many unlicensed and often non tax paying entities that reside under Air BnB, VRBO, etc.

BUT, because we offer furnished apartments where everybody has their own kitchen there is no way to go through the regulatory process of having an inspected kitchen, which is what you need in Washington State to serve food to the public. This may be different in Idaho, where our guest is from.

I am a bit surprised and the very negative response--two stars is a very serious review--our worst ever--and in this case based almost solely on "lack of service.'' Service that was never promised in any way. We are very clear that we cannot provide food. We offer furnished apartments with complete and private kitchens.

What our guest did get for her rate of $95 a night was an upgrade to a unit that usually rents for $135. She also found ironed sheets and table cloths, fresh flowers in the living room, local chocolates on the bed. In her own refrigerator she found butter and cream with gourmet coffee--locally roasted--and a coffee grinder. Our tea is stocked from Portland's Jasmine Pearl. Our guest was invited in her check in note to go pick up fresh eggs from the cooler by the chicken coop.

Why no better service--eggs already in fridge or arrival of service to the door in the morning? We are not allowed. The health department says we cannot provide anything in the units that needs refrigeration, in fact, we are not allowed to provide any kind of food that is not prepackaged--that is why the little creamers and butter in foil. We used to provide organic cream in bottles. But it will spoil, so we now cannot. Guests can go help themselves to fresh eggs, but we cannot put them in the units. Health Department rules.

As for lack of green cleaning. She is right, we do stock bleach cleaners in the units. Without going into too much detail, the average person can well imaging a situation where it would be a good thing to have a hotel use bleach products between guests. We do so only when it seem warranted--like someone has left many tissues in the trash baskets indicating a possible virus, or any other sign of sickness In these cases we unashamedly bleach everything. This if FOR the well-being of our guests! We use vinegar-based cleaners in most other applications and sometimes suffer through a review saying the unit smelled funny at first!

My apologies for the lack of breakfast! Hope this makes things more clear for future guests.
