You can hike in, boat in, or float plane in...that's it! I chose the boat, the slow one at that. If I had to recommend which one I say the fast boat. Though the slow one is a little more comfortable, the time spent in Stehekin is better spent.
From the second you step off the Lady of the Lake you feel welcomed. Phillip, the Lodge Manager I believe is waiting for you with a warm welcome in a colorful shirt. He is the "Mr. Roarke" of "Fantasy Island" there at the Lodge. He answers all your questions and helps you find your way for whatever your visits purpose, sightseeing, lunch, hotel...etc. If staying, Mary welcomes you at the desk and makes every effort to accommodate all your requests (as does everyone at the Lodge whatever their role). The lake-side rooms are roomy, comfortable with a spectacular view. If only staying 1 night splurge, if staying longer it won't matter where because the view is always available with a short walk.
The restaurant was great, for breakfast, Blueberry pancakes...fantastic! Dinner the meatloaf. It is a bestseller for a reason. The staff Keira, Kaelyn, Barbara, Brian, Micah, CR, "SloppyJoe", Cory...all super friendly and amazing. Whether they are serving you or you run into them about Stehekin they all stop, chat, recommend...
The room staff headed by the Fabulous Mary Martin were just as wonderful. Adam, Heather...they made towel origami for us everyday that was a surprise above and beyond. Very courteous and always trying to fulfill expectations, always exceeding.
They made a 4 day stay feel like a home-coming in one of the most wonderful places I have ever visited. Oh yes, Stehekin itself is a wonder. So remote and detached and charming. The hiking was incredible for all levels, even a slug like me.
There are other places to stay and eat but for me The Lodge at Stehekin wins hands down. It is so convenient and comfortable and the hub of everything. A visit to the bakery for coffee and a treat worth it and dinner at the Ranch worth it too, but the Lodge is the best choice for the stay.
I hope to return, for more of the sites but for the stay at the Lodge as well. It is that good!
