Owner description: Celebrating 81 years, Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown and a gathering place for connecting people through art via thoughtful exhibitions, exciting events, and enriching programs. The museum’s collection of more than 4,500 works emphasizes the art and artists of the Northwest and broader western region. Highlights of the collection include: -the largest retrospective museum collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on continued view; -the largest collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists; -key holdings in 19th century European and 20th-century American art; -one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast; and -the Haub Family Collection, one of the nation’s premier western American art collections, with approximately 300 works spanning 200 years. The Haub Family Collection is the first major museum collection of western American art in the Pacific Northwestern region. Named by USA Today as one of the “Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities,” the museum has developed a national reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner, with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. In addition to dynamic exhibitions, nationally touring shows, and historical retrospectives, TAM serves the diverse communities of the region through innovative programming and learning opportunities for all ages, including free community events. TAM is located in Tacoma’s Museum District, near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, and historic Union Station.

“Small museum, well organized, interesting exhibits”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We went to the Tacoma Art Museum primarily to view the Chihuly exhibit, but expanded the visit to include the entire museum. Interesting local art, pleasant experience, knowledgeable staff.

“Until October 5, distinctive and riveting photo portraits of Native Americans by Matika Wilbur”
Reviewed 2 August 2014 via mobile

The whole museum -- the building and the collections -- is excellent (and being doubled in size by a new addition) but we went specifically to see the exhibit of photographs by Matika Wilbur called Project 562 -- the number of recognized tribes when she began the project. This exhibit runs until October 5, 2014.

“Enjoyable visit”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

I visited with an artist friend. There was lots to see, and they are building a new wing. Ask an employee about the outdoor exhibit in the middle of the building. Very interesting history.
Good gift shop too, and they have a café.

“Interesting modern art”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We got the museum pass and went first to the art museum, which had a nice collection of Chihuly glass. We also had lunch at the café there, which had a wonderful coconut black bean soup. The cook and server were also very friendly and helpful.

“Don't Miss This”
Reviewed 7 July 2014 via mobile

My east coast girlfriend and I did a glass museum and Art Museum visit on the same day. The offerings at the Art Museum are varied and provide something for every taste. Just the building is beautiful. You won't be disappointed. We loved the big dog sculpture. Give it a go!
