“Grill Your Own Korean BBQ Excellent!”
Reviewed 2 February 2011

O Bok is tucked away in a small strip mall on S Tacoma Way. The name is not prominent, it just says Oriental Restaurant, don't let that fool you, the food is first rate. The restaurant serves both standard Korean restaurant fare cooked in the kitchen as well as cook your own at your table Korean BBQ (known as Yakiniku) at select tables. The BBQ must be a minimum 2 dish order or they will BBQ it in the back and bring it out to you. We tried the chicken, rib-eye beef (known as bul go gi), and the beef ribs (known as kal bi), all were excellent. Our waitress was knowledgeable and walked us through the process. The waitress fired up the grill and brought out a variety of "banchan" which are pickled vegetables and the obiquitous "kim chee", all were very tasty and varied in spiciness. When we asked the waitress what some of the more exotic greens were, she could not come up with an English equivalent but said we could purchase the greens at the nearby Paldo World or Boo Han Korean markets.

The meat was brought out and our waitress put it on the grill. Even though the restaurant was busy, she returned on a regular basis to check on the grilling meats and turned them as necessary. When she deemed them done, she pulled out a pair of regular scissors and proceeded to cut the meat up into bite size pieces-novel, but efficient. The flavor was exquisite with just the right blend of sweet and salty! The vegetable soup was a a hearty blend of onions, squash, egg, and tofu and was utterly delicious.

Our waitress explained to us the proper way to eat the meat was to place a small bit of rice, meat, and red miso (not really hot or spicey, but very flavorful) in the supplied fresh romaine lettuce leafs, wrap it up, and proceed to eat it like a veggie wrap. We ate a few like that, but it was just as good with just rice and some banchan. We asked for more of the seasame marinated spinach, bean sprouts, and sweet pickled radish, which the waitress quickly refilled, all inclusive in the meal at no extra charge-nice.

Be advised this restaurant is not for the unadventurous, outside of the occasional Anglo who was accompanying their Korean spouse, we were the only non-Koreans in the restaurant, yet recieved excellent service. Our waitress was very good at explaining everything on the menu and making excellent recommendations. Before we left, the owner came out and asked us how we enjoyed the food, what great customer service (although she wouldn't give me the recipie for the soup LOL)! If you are in the mood for an authentic Korean meal at a decent price, but were afraid to ask, this is the place for you!
