I stayed here 2 nights for a company seminar the first week in May. The grounds are very beautiful, and the room was amazing with a spectacular view. I especially liked the patio which made for a great place to retreat to after long days of work activity. The only reason why I am giving 4/5 is because the lady that operated the kayak booth on the dock was very snotty and had a terrible attitude. That was a total turnoff. Other than that, I had a great stay and hope we have our next retreat there.

We wanted to do something special for our 26th anniversary. Originally we were going to go to the Cannery Inn in Astoria as we have stayed there before and loved it! Then I found this place and it looked beautiful plus we love the hiking opportunities in the area. We went all out and got a room with a view for $275. When we arrived we were disappointed in the size of the room, typical hotel room just with upgraded furnishings. Also only a soaking tub, missed that fact when making my reservation, would have assumed for the price it would be a jacuzzi tub. Our view straight out was blocked by an events tent. Also we were placed next to the bride of one of two weddings being held that day. They were loud....but left for the wedding ceremony within an hour so it was better. That was until after the wedding in which the reception was held directly underneath our room and went until late into the night.

We had dinner at the restaurant and while the meal was nice and atmosphere was pretty, felt over priced with comparable places.

Also didn't realize we got charged for the coffee in the room until reading another post here (haven't received final billing yet) Wow....that's just wrong. Guess that will be another $10 as my husband took the extra ones thinking "we payed $275 for the room, so these are paid for..."

On a positive note, the premises are well tended, location is beautiful and there are a lot of things to do in the area, just won't be staying here next time....Deanna

This year for Mother's day I decided to spend a weekend at the Alderbrook Resort and Spa with my husband and toddler son. I have heard many good things about it and it is rated as one of the top hotels in the Pacific Northwest.

Another reason I chose this place is its proximity to Seattle, which is a big plus when traveling with a toddler. Just under a two hour trip can be divided between a ferry ride from Seattle to Bremerton (1 hour) and then another 40 minutes a drive in a car.

The resort meets its price-based expectations: located right on a hood canal, clean, modern design with a cabin feel in the lobby, helpful staff, great views and all fixtures are working in the room. The restaurant serves delicious premium food: steaks and seafood.

This is the only resort that I have been to so far that is designed for families. There is a spa, a golf course, boats and other water activities plus the gym, great quality food and children are everywhere. There are craft stations for kids in the hallways of a hotel plus a small playground. We went on a few short nature hikes (1/2 mile) right outside the resort.

I also saw several babymooners there. Spa features a maternity menu!

The pier and the beach full of rocks and oyster shells is an exploratory ground for kids. My son enjoyed collecting rocks and throwing them in a water.

The drawback is that resort is in a middle of nowhere. There are no stores or restaurants nearby so unless you want to eat every meal at a restaurant and your kid likes the selections they have you better bring your own water, milk and food. Of course, my husband complained that the mini bar in the room did not have beer. The problem was solved by going to the restaurant to get it and bring it back.

I highly recommend this resort to families.

We first saw this Resort on a local Evening Magazine show and noticed the excellent reviews. It is also the only Resort/Spa within one hour drive of our home and chose to go there, as opposed to driving 3-5 hours to one of the other 5 or so full service Resorts/Spas in the Pacific NW. The sole purpose was to wallow in Spa treatments for 2 days to recuperate from a stressful remodel project and to celebrate my husband's birthday.

Alderbrook is located directly at the Hood Canal shore in a beautifully designed, typical Pacific NW setting with picturesque views of the Olympic Mountains (if it's not cloudy/raining). There are all sorts of activities like canoes, paddle boats, etc. We stayed in the horseshoe-designed main Lodge with a Canal view, because the cottages are too big for one couple. Please see my notes about room selection. There is a tiny store on the premises, but it offered nothing special.

The room was decent size, quiet and clean, although the heat was off (outside temps were in the mid 50s), and some things could have been designed better. There is a window bench which looks cozy, but is not designed for sitting - besides, you can't see outside without turning oneself into a pretzel. It would have been more practical to put a small tables and couple of chairs in that alcove so one can enjoy that first morning coffee with a view. There was a lamp (unnecessary because of pendant lights overhead), which made it very cumbersome, standing on that padded bench, to reach the spaghetti of strings behind it to close all those the blinds. There is also a teeny balcony with a couple of folding chairs - quaint...

Also - we like to play cards, and the room doesn't offer anything other than a large, non-reclining chair with big ottoman and a chair by the tiny desk. We tried to use one of the 2 game tables in the lobby, located near a big gas fireplace, but they were occupied when we wanted to play - and on a weekend or holiday it appears to be very noisy. We stayed Thursday and Friday nights - and by mid day Friday there were screaming little kids everywhere.

The bathroom is well appointed, but the lighting is dim (we're both in our 60s and eye sight isn't what it used to be) - suppose nobody needs to shave or put on makeup on vacation. If you need towels when getting out of the big, beautiful tub, better remember to retrieve it before getting into it - or you'll traipse wet and barefoot across the room to get one from above the toilet. There should be a towel rack or at least a hook next to the tub. The rack that's there is for the floor mat and barely within reach.

The Spa service and personnel is fantastic! We used the exfoliating wrap, hot oil scalp massage, foot and hand massage, and both regular and Hot Stone massage to the tune of almost a thousand $ - but it was heavenly! There is one caveat - if someone gets cold easily - wear warm clothes to get to/from the Spa facility! Depending on your room location - you either have to cross the entire outside courtyard - rain, cold, or shine - or hike through that long, chilly ground level corridor past big maintenance rooms and more guestrooms. Once in the Spa, we encountered more chills in the dressing rooms and the Relaxation Room - which sported 65F. That's especially uncomfortable because you'll be wearing just a provided terry cloth robe... There was a small space heater - in front of which I spent my "relaxing time".

Even the treatment rooms were much cooler than we've ever experienced elsewhere. But the treatment tables are heated. If you choose the exfoliating warp - be aware that it's wet - and the cold is definitely not comfortable! The lighting is directly above the heated treatment tables - so bring some shades... There is also a dry sauna and steam room, as well as a large indoor pool and exercise room - but if you use any of those outside Spa hours to have interior access, they are ONLY accessible from the outside - again through rain, shine, or cold!

The food in their Restaurant was - for the lack of a more superlative description - YUMMY! Don't be afraid to try the Wild Boar - it melts on your tongue without tasting gamey whatsoever. And we could have made a meal out of just the bread and herbal butter! The New England Clam Chowder was among the best we ever had - even in New England! !Breakfast was also fantastic - try the Croque Madame with their signature potato cakes....oh baby! And the wild mushroom omelet!

We did notice some (unexpected for such a fine restaurant) cleanliness issues - starting out with the butter dish, which had butter smeared all over the outside. When I pointed it out to the very nice server - her response was "oh - it's just butter..." and made a futile attempt to clean it off. But I didn't notice it being on my hands and promptly touched my clothes accidentally - leaving grease stains on my not-so-cheap scarf.

We also noticed quite a few stained chair seats with food crumbs, dirty cups, a bug in the creamer, and cutlery straight on the wooden tables instead of wrapped in napkins. We all know how dirty those cleaning cloths are - full of germs and bacteria, even viruses. We put our silverware in one of the water glasses to clean them - hoping to avoid catching anything nasty. And in the Lounge our coffee and water glasses were served by the rims where the lips go instead of by the handles or the lower part of the glasses.

Overall we had a great time and were treated like royalty by very attentive and accommodating staff (kudos to Keylla!) - especially since it was my husband's birthday. There were huge home made choc-chip cookies and a nice bottle of wine in the room, and at dinner he got a complimentary crème brulee with candle. We now know what to expect and will definitely visit Alderbrook again - but only during mid week and most likely not during colder months. If someone is looking for a romantic couples retreat - this facility does not offer the peace and quiet one might crave. It definitely caters more to families.

Room Tip: Resort is on a slope, so the entrance/lobby is on the 2nd floor, with rooms above and below. Unless...

My family and I just returned from a three day trip to Alderbook over Easter weekend. This was our first trip away from home after our son was born (Jan 2014). It was a much needed getaway and The Alderbrook was a great place to relax and spend time together as a family away from the city.

Customer Service
When we arrived, the check-in was quick and easy. The man at the desk was very friendly and knowledgeable and immediately made me feel welcome. They spend the time to ask you about your visit and get to know you on a personal level and share with you all the events happening during our stay. Since we were visiting over Easter weekend they had an egg coloring activity for kids, an Easter egg hunt, and an Easter brunch.

Room
We stayed in the 2 bedroom waterfront cottage and it was perfect for our family of four. The cottage provided the right amount of space and had a fully equipped kitchen, which is useful if you're traveling with children and want to have in room snacks and food (milk, yogurt, etc.).

The room was located in a prime spot as we were able to walk right out onto the beach. It was neat to see low tide and high tide from the room as in the morning you could walk right out there and then in the evening it was covered up. There was a blue heron that plopped itself outside our cottage the entire trip. We also saw the chef come out and harvest oysters for the brunch! Talk about fresh!

The bedding was super comfortable and my husband was mentioning last night when we were home that he wanted new pillows, just like the ones from The Alderbrook!

Amenities and Activities
We arrived in the late afternoon and were limited on time due to sleeping schedules so we took the time to tour the grounds and let my daughter play on the kids playground area. The grounds were very well manicured and there were quite a few activities for people (croquet, badminton, a fire pit for s'mores, and even oyster harvesting).

I had the opportunity to take advantage of the spa and had a relaxing hour massage with Tom. There is also a sauna and steam room available to all guests!

My husband took our toddler daughter to the indoor pool on the second day when the weather wasn't cooperating for outdoor activities. It was a great way to get her energy out and leave the cottage. We were looking forward to taking a walk along some of the nature trails across the road from The Alderbrook but the weather never turned out for us, next time!

We also checked out a DVD from the front desk for the evening. There was a great selection for family movies and again the front desk people were very friendly.

Food
We ordered room service one day and had one of the best fish and chips ever. The fish was very fresh and the breading was crispy. My daughter devoured it. The clam chowder bread bowl was also very good (lots of bacon and clams). The price was very reasonable, the serving size was large, and service was prompt. Highly recommend.

We went to the restaurant for the Easter brunch and it was AMAZING. A bit pricey, but well worth it! Our two year old daughter didn't eat much, we didn't even order her an entrée as it would have been a waste of food and we still paid the kid fee ($15). I might recommend that the kids fee only be charged for children 4 and up, young ones don't eat much. The spread was amazing! Crab, shrimp, salmon, fresh oysters, clams, etc...there was so much to pick from and then you had an option of an entrée from the kitchen as well! All the food was delicious and everything was very well laid out. We also had their Bloody Mary's and it was a meal in itself, a crab claw and lots of other garnishes!

Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back again! Perhaps making this an annual trip.

There is only one small complaint and that is our room service tray was never picked up. We had called to let them know that we had the tray ready for pick up on Saturday afternoon and as of Sunday afternoon when we were checking out, the tray was still sitting on our porch and crows had picked out all the fries and bread :-) Housekeeping did not visit our cottage at all during our stay.

Tips for a Visit
Get an ocean view or waterfront cottage
Visit Stottle Winery for wine tasting (kids welcome)
Swing by 2 Margaritas for dinner one night for something different
Stop by the Union Square Deli for ice cream, coffee, or pizza
Take advantage of all the amenities at Alderbrook (Spa, Pool, Sauna/Steamroom, outdoor games, water activity rentals, etc.)

Room Tip: Waterfront Cottage (#22) - best room on the grounds! Right on the beach and very spacious.

Who wouldn't want to start their weekend get-a-way with an Anna smile and warm welcome!? My husband and I got married at Alderbrook on Easter Sunday 2012 and have returned 4 times since. Anna was our wedding planner (who is amazing BTW), so seeing her greet us (and remember us) from behind the counter was very sweet!

For this weekend we brought our kids for the Easter events/brunch and despite the weather (can't hold that against the resort) the weekend was perfect! We colored eggs on Saturday in the conference room, went swimming, painted landscapes on the complimentary artist easels, went on a dock walk, skipped rocks, and on Sunday enjoyed the egg hunt, family photos, and brunch.

We've eaten at A LOT of high end restaurants and I can honestly say that Alderbrook might just be my favorite food. First of all, kudos to the restaurant staff for fixing a seating snafu. I made reservations for a window seat a month in advance (it was our anniversary) but when we arrived they tried to seat us in the middle of the floor at a small round table. When we asked for an alternate seat and mentioned our earlier reservations they went out of their way to fix it and re-seat us. Thank you for that level of customer service; trust me, it didn't go unnoticed and that is what keeps us returning to this magnificent place!

WOW...the variety at the brunch buffet was incredible! Everything was so fresh, tasted amazing, and the display was gorgeous. For my plated dish I tried the banana bread french toast and I'm still dreaming about it! My husband had the salmon eggs benedict and he said it was incredible, and my son's mushroom omelet got rave reviews.

This is our first visit with a local crafter selling her arts and crafts outside and we thought that was a special touch!

You did it again Alderbrook! We can't wait for our next weekend (or longer) get-a-way.

I have taken a small group to the resort for a few years now and this last time there was some little issues that though not a major inconvenience but was and should not have been. The last two years I have noticed a new feeling or culture at the property and always involved but not directly is the General Manager. For this reason I was really curious this year with the problems my group had, and how they would be addressed. This is the customer service to "another level" I do not want to say what went wrong and exactly what was the resolution because I do not want to set that as the expectation.

I did not complain about what happened but made it clear that I was not pleased. Action was taken and not only was it more than I could have expected another level was that what was done was not like any other experience. Hard to explain but what I mean for example is that say something is wrong with your meal at a restaurant...the manager comes over, apologies and gives you a free desert or whatever and then you thank them for the gesture? Their establishment made the error but we are thanking them only seeming to make them feel better about apologizing. The exact opposite happened here. The GM corrected the matter, and said nothing to me. He did not need recognition for doing what was right, but beyond that he went way over the top in making it right and still did not look to me to make him feel better. It was incredible. I actually reached out to him to say it was over the top and this is exactly what he said "you have been coming here for a few years spending good money not only with us but the local golf course, and Robin Hood (local restaurant) That is appreciated and if your group is 5 or a 100 your business is important to me and this community and we want to see it again".

Blew me away to experience such sincere gratitude from a place. I feel that from everyone when at the resort and now I know that it truly starts at the top.

Thanks, and you will see us next year if not sooner.
