“Beautiful mountain escape”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2012

We drove through the Cascades coming from Canada wine region into Seattle. This was a beautiful stop along the way. A beautiful resort, lovely room with a back deck over looking the mountains. We hiked along a trail in the morning and had a deer and her two fawns visit us early in the morning. The lodge was quiet and peaceful. Two pools and wonderful lodge. No TVs is fantastic!! Worth the visit - especially with a coupon from the local school fundraising.

We stayed at the Sun Mountain Resort first Weekend of August 2012. The rooms were overpriced as for one night they charged around $385.00... The first room we stayed, they had to relocate us as the aircondition system wasnt working and it was miserably hot... They moved us to another room that was quite nice, but too not worth the price... If this is a business trip for you the cell service is sketchy... You must go outside the Lodge and try to find cell service.... Some how they have blocked the cell service and you can't get calls or use the phone in the restaurant. Which maybe is good, because you don't get interrupted by cell phone's ringing... but thought I would give you advanced warning.... The real irritation came when we checked in and they wanted to hold another $200 on my card.... Most hotels do this, so please always check in about their policies... I asked them about how long the hold would be and she pointed at the sign on the counter that said "Debit Card Holders please note, your bank account will hold an amount for maybe over a week". "We do not determine this length, its up to your bank" That really was inaccurate information and I told them so" I called my bank and put them on Speaker phone and asked them if this was true" They said absolutely not...... The Sun Mountain Lodge is the one that determines the hold period not us..." The check in lady face got red and I knew that was inaccurate... I refused to give her my card and offered her cash and she declined... So at that point she wanted us out of there and told us to go ahead and stay.... Please those who read this do not let them do this to you.... Always call your bank and get accurate information.... The restaurant staff was very unfriendly and they acted like it was an imposition to serve you... I asked one of the crabby waitstaff if she was having a bad day and she responded "I have morning sickness and don't feel like smiling"... Save your money go somewhere friendly....

Room Tip: Always asks questions about the credit card length of time they say the will hold your deposit and b...

Thank you for your review: I was pleased we are able to relocate you so quickly to another room with functioning air conditioning - the room were first assigned has a repaired system now. Cell service is a bit spotty in this quiet part of the world which for many is part of the allure. No, we have not discovered a way to block cell phone signal into the dining room! I am sorry you fell afoul of the debit card dilema we all seem to face. We (Sun Mountain Lodge) do not and cannot hold your funds, only the bank can do this - a good safeguard for debit card users. I'm sorry you found my wait staff crabby - I could not help but notice your other restaurant reviews held the same theme. Our dining room supervisor is pregnant and as she mentioned to you she was returning from from the rest room suffering from morning sickness. I'm afraid it was not a happy moment for her but she did recover nicely and was able to continue her shift without any further episodes. She is by nature a very pleasant young lady and I am certain this is all but behind her.

From the moment we pulled up to Sun Mountain Lodge, my husband and I knew we were in for something special. The staff was super friendly and helpful, the grounds were beautifully kept, the food was delicious and our stay was really amazing. We stayed in the Gardner building and found it difficult to ever want to the leave the room. The views from the balcony were breathtaking, the hot tub was perfectly situated and the bed was so comfortable. When we did pull ourselves away from room, we truly enjoyed the hiking trails that surrounded the lodge and the pool/hot tub area. We were so glad we splurged b/c it was a memorable stay!

We booked at the last minute and were told all that was available was a building apart from the main lodge. It was great and we will return. Patio led to grassy area with view of valley below. Pool was just up the hill with hot tub there. Less noise than the main hotel pool.

Room Tip: Level one of two story building have patios on the grass.

We love the Winthrop area for its beauty and wildlife. I'd always wanted to stay at Sun Mountain and our room in the Gardner building did not disappoint. I was out on the balcony till 10 at night and back out at 6:30 in the morning. The view, as others have said, is spectacular and changes with the light. Our rustic style room had a very comfy king bed, sofa, gas fireplace, wet bar and large, well appointed bathroom. The included breakfast was very good. See separate review for the dining room

Room Tip: Room 116 in the Gardner building is very well located.

We enjoyed our stay at Sun Mountain Lodge, but thought it was very overpriced. We stayed in the Gardener suites, but the room was like trying to negotiate an obstacle course to get from the bed to the bathroom. the large couch and chair in the room were uncomfortable to sit on and the table, desk chair combo was so uncomfortable you could only sit there for a few minutes. The Balcony got afternoon sun so you couldn't sit out there in afternoon, or early evening for the heat. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very large and nicely appointed with lots of room for our stuff.

We did the cowboy dinner one night and that was fun and good food and I was very impressed with the attention the staff gave to small children on the wagon ride and dinner. The other 3 members of our party took the horseback ride out to the dinner and said it was enjoyable. But the stables are so far removed from the lodge (down a cliff) that they were almost like driving to a separate place and not integrated into the lodge. We spent one day at the pool, but there was a nest of bees at one end that bothered the swimmers and there were no poolside attendants or possibilites for refreshments.

We had drinks at the bar and ate both lunch and breakfast there. The food was good and plentiful. The views are beautiful from all angles of the property and the surrounding country is quite lovely. The lodge was clean and well maintained. I didn't like all the stairs, up and down to everywhere, but that is unfortunately the topography of the location. There are plenty of activities available to keep you busy during your stay. My husband went on the half day horseback ride, but was disappointed with the slow paced walk with no opportunities to trot or lope and no breaks for the entire 4 hours.

On the whole this is a very nice place, just didn't think it was worth the thousand dollars we spent for two days there. (Room plus food plus activities.) There isn't a lot of choice in the area so I would probably choose to stay here again. It is way more than just a hotel.

Room Tip: stay in the main lodge.

You've read the other reviews that mention the views, and yes, they are wonderful. Lots of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding that can keep the entire family active. There are two well-maintained swiming pools and during our stay they were not overly crowded.
I would not classify the bedrooms as "luxurious", although they were clean and quite adequate. The bed was most comfortable and the linens were fresh and relatively new. Our bathroom appeared recently renovated, and was quite nice, very clean and adequately sized as well.
Good meals in the restaurant, which also provides a super view. Don't miss the breakfasts.
