“Cozy and rustic”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

Things are very casual and laid back here - if you arrive and nobody's around, just grab a key and go to your room - pay in the morning. The entry hall/room is very comfortable, it has tables, games, a fire place. We had a nice room ("deluxe") upstairs, facing the river. It had a little balcony - a robin was sitting on the nest out there, watching us carefully. The room was equipped with a coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, and TV. The bathroom was functioning and ok. The bed was wonderful. We were there on a Saturday night, and there was a noisy group downstairs at the picnic tables until late. This is not the place for reading - the lights are sparse and not bright enough. But, overall, it's cozy and comfortable. Breakfast was continental, the usual; bring your own protein. You can supplement the breakfast and buy hardboiled eggs in the IGA store 2 doors away.

Room Tip: Upstairs, facing the river.

This was my second stay at the Virginian. It's definitely not fancy, but the price was reasonable and it worked fine. All rooms seem far enough off the road that there wasn't a lot of traffic noise. Contrary to some of the reviews, though, not all rooms have a microwave and fridge -- we had a value priced room and neither was included. But it was still very adequate for our needs. Breakfast wasn't overwhelming, but not bad. Mostly rolls, bagels, kids cereal, yogurt, poptarts, juice, coffee, and some fruit. There's a microwave in the breakfast area too, plus a grocery store two doors down if you want something more substantial to eat. Walking to town isn't out of the question either if you're ok walking on the narrow shoulder of the road part of the way there to where the pedestrian suspension bridge is, otherwise it's a short drive. Staff was all very friendly. They changed our towels each day and also took out the trash, but we had to ask for more toilet paper. Anyway, if you're ok with a rustic sorta place and are looking for a decent deal very close to Winthrop, I think it's a decent deal.

The room was clean, and the continental breakfast was more than adequate. The staff was very nice, and I appreciated that the hotel was pet friendly. I had no major problems with this hotel.

I wish, however, that there was conditioner in the bathroom and that I didn't have to walk on the road to get to the cute part of Winthrop. The pizza joint right next to the hotel was convenient and pretty tasty.

Room Tip: "River view" doesn't mean that you'll have access to the river, but it is nice to...

We just booked again for our 4th year in a row. Always stayed in the sweet cabins but decided to try the facing river room this time. Pet friendly. Very people friendly. Love the breakfast. The whole place has a family feel to it. Clean & comfortable. Short drive to town & so much to do there.

Room Tip: Cozy feel of the cabins. Cannot hear neighbors as they are separated from each other.

Stayed in one of the cabins twice. Friendly owner gave late check in discount the first time staying there. Stayed last year for a couple of nights in a pet friendly cabin which was very clean and cozy with fireplace and partial kitchen. Continental breakfast and free wifi. Next to gas station, grocery store, and excellent pizza. Price very reasonable and would definitely stay again.

Planned a couple of days over recent holiday weekend to meet friends so only needed one bed and shower. We booked several months in advance through Central Reservations, rate decent. Our room was clean, older, but gave a rustic feel. A/C worked well in this room. On ground floor in the back building by the river. Parking was tight as the first night every room was full. Second night no problem. Breakfast bar, just cereal, juice, and pastries. No frills. But, I would stay there again.

It's an old motel, all worn wood, but a nice location by the river. You can get rooms that are just a grassy area away from the river's edge. Gas Station right next door on one side, with a grocery store and hardware store beside that. On the other side is a Pizza restaurant with outdoor seating (quite a small place). The Virginian allows pets and they do have cabins. Note: there is no one to check you in after 9 p.m. Breakfast is enough to tide you over until you have lunch - bagels, doughnuts, yogurt, juice, cereal and milk, coffee, etc. We felt quite safe and secure here. The owner is extremely friendly and nice. Would definitely stay here again. Next time I would get a room upstairs (2 stories) as we had a downstairs room and you could really hear the person upstairs....so I guess it's minimal soundproofing there. You cannot walk into the town of Winthrop from this motel. It's about a 5 minute drive. Apparently they do close for the winter and re-open in April/May.
