“Charming and wonderful”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

We recently stayed at the Mt. Gardner in Witnthrop WA and were very pleased. The room was done nicely and was very pleasant. The innkeeper was very accomodating and made some excellent suggestions for us regarding restaurants and the walk to town. Our only suggestion was to include some coffee in the lobby. The machines in the room just don't do it for us and its nice to have fresh coffee provided in a lobby for guests, otherwise a great place with a great location and management, and reasonable.

The owners are quite personable. Our room was a good size and everything clean and orderly. The place is dog friendly and you can hang out in a grassy area with the dogs off leash and sit at a picnic table.

Room Tip: Our room was in the front building on the highway, but we didn't hear any traffic noise.

Green Features: very enviro oriented and will recycle bottles and such

We are new "pet parents" and this was our first overnight trip with our new pooch; this trip was the first I have planned for which I had to be cognizant of "pet constraints". I was attracted to this property because it was overtly "pet-friendly" and this was made clear on the property's website. Certain rooms are specifically designated as "pets allowed rooms".

I am not a fan of B&Bs with their chichi bedding and draperies and odd layouts, but this is not a B&B. Instead, it combines the positive aspects of a B&B (e.g., active day-to-day management by the owner/ innkeepers, small size, sense of camaraderie with fellow guests) but with the familiarity of a more standard motel that you'd find in a touristy town.

I was a little leery of what a room in an overtly pet-friendly inn would be like, but in fact the room was extremely clean; there were no visible signs that it was a "pet room".

The pictures and descriptions on the inn's website are an accurate representation of the experience. A few remarks:
1. It was nice to have an outdoor table (with umbrella) right outside the room.
2. The lawn in front of the west building is lush and green, and all guests are welcome to use it. It's a nice area for pets to "do their business" and it seems as though pet visitors have had responsible owners who do the right thing and clean up.
3. It would be nice if they could have a little landscaping adjacent to the east building, including a shade tree as the outdoor table adjacent to the room is blazing hot in the intense afternoon and early evening sunshine of this semi-arid location.
4. Bedding, linens, toiletries were nothing special but perfectly acceptable.
5. You probably did not come to Winthrop to sit in a motel room and watch TV, but the room is equipped with DirecTV and hence a wide channel selection. Free wireless internet is also available but I did not sign in as I made a pledge to stay off the grid during this trip.
6. The heart of Winthrop (i.e., the central business district) is about a 2-minute drive away. You could walk it, but it would not be a very pleasant walk along busy Hwy. 20. Personally, I like being just a little bit off the beaten path.
7. There was a refrigerator (including a small freezer compartment) in the room, as well as a microwave. We appreciated this as it enabled us to buy some deli meat for sandwiches for dinner and the next day's lunch, and also keep some milk and OJ on hand for an in-room breakfast of microwavable oatmeal.

I was very pleased with my stay here and have no issues with recommending it to other travelers, human and canine alike. My 4-star review (rather than 5) does not mean there was anything wrong with it; it is simply an acknowledgement that this is not a luxury property, but there is no shame in that.

Green Features: They do mention that they recycle any recyclable items that guests leave in the room.

Thank you for this nice review of our pet friendly standard room. Due to this guests review history, we appreciate his feedback. We do want to note: This guest said you need to walk on the dusty highway to get to town, when in fact, guests can walk three buildings down the highway (a 25 MPH two lane rd) and connect with the 2 year old pedestrian trail into downtown. It is a 10-15 minute walk with an amazing pedestrian bridge on the trail.

My wife and I were traveling through Winthrop with our dog and I was looking for a place to stay that was pet friendly. Mt. Gardener Inn has four rooms that they reserve for travelers with pets and so we booked one of those. You would think that the pet-friendly spots would be a bit on the lower end side, but our room was quite nice. I was really pleased with the quality of the room and the nice touches the owners had made to allow their guests to enjoy the property. I would definitely come here again.

Such a peaceful and relaxing place to stay and the owners are delightful as well as accommodating. We would certainly recommend Mt. Gardener Inn to anyone passing through Winthrop. It would be the perfect spot for extended family or a group of friends to congregate.

We were very sorprise on how clean and nice this small hotel was. The rooms were tastefully decorated and very clean. The lady that checked-us-in was very nice and helpfull.
the hotel is just 5 minute drive to town or 15 minute walking disctance.
The have a fishing gear shop at the front desk which is gear toward fly fishing.
The front desk lady recommended dinner at the Old School House, which had good burgers on an outside terrace overlooking the river.

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. We were looking for the cheapest hotel possible for a quick Winthrop visit, this was the cheapest. So, we weren't expecting much. We were blown away by the character of the inn, the friendly service, just the overall pleasant experience. We brought our little dog with us, and like a previous reviewer said, he was welcomed with open arms. The room was clean, cozy, and had everything we needed for our 2-night stay. Definitely would stay again! Highly recommended! The only thing, the T.V. was really tiny, but that's ok, we didn't use it much anyways.

Thank you for the wonderful review of our inn! Most of our rooms have 32" flat screen TVs but a couple do not yet. This room has a 19" Vizio flat screen. A high quality TV but it is smaller than our others. We are always making improvements and appreciate guest feedback. A larger TV for this room will be bumped higher on our priority list. Thanks!
