“Beyond words: slow, awful food”
Reviewed 21 February 2008

We went to dinner at Maria's on President's Day weekend. We were 4 adults, 3 children, hungry and happy. It was about 6 pm on a Sunday night (President's Day weekend), and the restaurant was virtually empty. The dinner was terrible: long wait for simply inexcusable food.
The service was pleasant enough, but excruciatingly slow and not so well-informed. For example, when we asked whether the pasta was fresh, the waitress said Yes. When we asked further about it (trying to avoid any incidents with our egg-allergic guest), she said that it was dried pasta from a box, and that they boiled it fresh. The salads that were to come with our meals never appeared, which is probably for the best: the food was God-awful. The pizza was a low-quality FROZEN PIZZA. As hungry as we were, we couldn't stomach it. The pasta was equally inedible (stuffed shells and spaghetti). The place had been recommended to us as a good place to go with children; we're bewildered about that, given how long it took and the low quality food. The waitress did bring crayons and coloring books, which was a step in the right direction. The decor is over-the-top (Pope plates on display, rosaries for sale at the front register), but that has its own charms. Not so for the food and service. Avoid it!

Quaint alternative to your average hotel room. The free breakfast was not good, but there are near by restaurants to choose from. We had the suite; 2 rooms with a shared bath and kitchenette. Loved the neighborhood and the porch. Thanks Perry family!!!!

This is less of a restaurant & more of a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The service is S--L--O--W (i.e. after we ordered simple meals--subs & pasta-- it took close to 50 minutes to be served!)

Any residual Catholic guilt will make it hard for you to get up & leave... but you should.... the food is marginal at best.

I frequently take little weekend "breathers" and head out to Berkeley Springs, WV, for weekend R & R.

Last year I was introduced to Maria's Garden Restaurant. Since that introduction, I always come back when in the area. Peg, the owner & primary cook, makes the BEST meatballs. They are huge, tasty, and filling. Her personality sparkles and this sparkle is reflected in her food.

I have also stayed in the "Suite" 3 or 4 different times. It is slated for renovations, but I adore the old-fashioned kitchen. It reminds me of growing up in the 60s. You can just see yourself and Donna Reed sitting down at the formica table with a steaming cup of coffee.

The Suite is clean, roomy, and affordable. It is warm in the winter and air conditioned (window units) in the summer.

Breakfast is included in the price of the room. The waitresses are friendly and helpful. One gets two choices of hot meals for the breakfast that comes with the room. Both choices are filling and satisfying.

I always enjoy walking down to the nearby 7-11, picking up a few of the local papers and a cup of cappacino, returning to Maria's for a little quiet moment on the wrap around porch with my coffee & papers.

The property is just 2 blocks from the Park and closer still to all of the quaint shops & art galleries. It is an idea location.

I have had the opportunity to inspect all of the rooms on the Angel Wing. Peg has put a lot of thought into the recent renovations. Each of the rooms are comfortable, clean, and special.

Recently had dinner at Maria's during a trip to Berkeley Springs. My mother and I both found the food (mostly Italian) to be excellent. Service was also good and the surroundings were very pleasant. Prices were very reasonable. I would definitely recommend Maria's. We didn't have kids with us, but it looked like it would accommodate them well.
