“It's a House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

These houses are very nice, they are the actual houses the miners stayed in after work. Plenty of options for your bed needs. These units have full service kitchens and baths. Nice quiet area to relax and enjoy.

Went on Cass for the 3rd time in 25 years. First time in spring, however, and we really enjoyed. The views were fantastic, the weather couldn't have been better. Tends to be rather cold up top in October but it was just lovely for a picnic in May 2014. We could not have had a better time.

We travel with a wheelchair and they were well prepared for us. Used an elevator lift to get into the train. Accessible bathroom was nearby. Gravel path at the top was not well done for manual wheelchair, too soft, but we managed to get where we wanted to go. Could not get on the observation platform at the top, steps only. They tell us that will change this year.

Sound system not very good so if you want to hear a guide give their narration it is not always loud enough. They really should do that via headphones for those that want to hear it. Part of the problem might have been that we're early in the season and the guides are learning their way.

We took the 4.5 hour trip to Bald Knob. Highly, highly recommend this excursion.

I rented # 249 a premium company 2 story house for me, my son and his family. This was much more than we expected when we walked in the back door. WOW! With 5 year old triplet granddaughters and another granddaughter 6, and then my grandson who is 16 it is hard to get motel rooms that work for the group.
My son was celebrating his birthday and he was entering the "roadkill cook off" for the first time in Marlinton, West Virginia. That was a once in a life time event for me!

The house was great with a full bath upstairs with the old style cast iron deep tub and the downstairs had a small bathroom with a small but useful shower off the kitchen which was retrofitted. The house had a spacious downstairs with a large LR, DINING for 8 plus, and a large fully equipped kitchen. The 3 bedrooms were roomy upstairs and slept 7 but there was a cot also.
My grandson opted for the large comfy couch and watched TV. Everyone liked the spaciousness and felt like a home away from home! There was a picnic table outside with a grill to use. We were only there 2 days but really wish we were able to stay longer and enjoy a little slower time. We had too many things to do in a short time. The TV reception was great to watch and relax in the late evening, the kids loved it. If you are in the area, don 't miss staying here, you 'll love it and enjoy the old style woodwork and the hardwood floors.
The only complaint we had was the type of mattresses and box springs they used were too light, not heavy enough and when you roll toward the edge of any of the beds you could fall off. One of the girls fell off as she is a side sleeper. Everything else was great! We didn't go on the train too much else we were doing.

Stayed at Cass on Saturday night and took the family on the train ride Sunday. The trees were beautiful. Staff was good. Food in the depot was average but prices high. Seats on train not very comfy...even for short ride. But my baby had an extra special day!! So our day was awesome. Highly recommend this to every family.

Took family to ride the train at Cass Mtn and had a ball! The scenery was nice and the train ride very enjoyable. Make sure you get there when the train pulls into the station as they board you right away. We had a full train with some people having to stand for hours. Everyone was so nice. If you get the chance, GO!! We stayed at one of the refurbished company houses which was OK for the money and plenty big for the seven of us. There were five bedrooms and two baths, a large living room and dining room with a table that would seat at least eight people. There was a bench and swing on the front porch that was great for deer watching. There is no air conditioning but we found a box fan that did the job. If peeling paint bothers you, this isn't the place for you. One of the bathrooms had a soft spot on the floor and some torn linoleum. We chose this place for it's proximity to the railroad. This isn't a five star hotel, not even three but it served its purpose for our trip and I would definitely go back again!

Room Tip: If you're planning to make this trip and stay on one of the company houses, bring food as there...

Trains were superb. Unless your a railfan or want to see the scenery recommend the 2 hr ride. In fact the best time we had was the 9:45 shop tour which was free!!!! Not only did we get to see the shops, but all the trains we waking up, shuttling cars about and generally having a wonderful time. The most action is early morning and recommend a overnight to see it. Pray for chilly weather cause then you can really see the steam!!! Couldn't link on the internet to the park houses so we stayed at the Morning Glory Inn in Slatyfork , about 20 minutes away, and highly recommend it.

We are a family of five, including three kids ages 7 to 14. We stayed here for two nights while touring the park and visiting the radio telescope.

When thinking of a company house built for workers, I expected it to be small. It is actually quite large, with an nearly open floor plan on the first floor, many windows, and good sized bed rooms on the second floor. There is no A/C, but it was fine, even in July when the daytime temp got to around 80F. There are screens for some windows, and there were fans, but we did not use the fans.

The house is beautifully decorated and seems like a home. There are quilts with different patterns on all the beds. The windows all have curtains. The dining room had chairs for 8 people. The kitchen was fully equipped pots, pans, etc and even Fiesta-ware plates. The bathroom is small, but modern with shower. There is even a porch swing.

The house we got (334) has 3 bedrooms, one with a double bed and two bedrooms with two twin beds each. Two of the bedrooms were a good size, one was a bit smaller, but was fine for us. There are lots of towel bars in the bedrooms, so it was easy to hang up the bath towels.

The house was very clean, except the floor, which I think is an impossible project to keep clean due to the coal dust from the railroad in the air everywhere. (Just don't walk in the house in socks!)

The only not-modern feature are the door locks: The house has both front and back doors, and neither has a dead-bolt, and they use a regular house key, not key-cards.

These are truly a gem and the price makes them a real bargain. We really enjoyed our stay and our visit to the park. We would definitely stay here again.
