Every month the art galleries located on Capitol Street and the adjoining streets have an event called an "Art Walk." The galleries stay open past their usual closing time, and they put up special exhibits featuring the work of local fine artists. They also offer FREE wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and hors d'oeuvres to the public. You do not need to make any kind of purchase to enjoy the free food and drinks.

The Art Walk is held on the 3rd Thursday of every month of the year except June. In June it is held on Thursday of the same week as FestivAll, which means it is usually on the 4th Thursday of that month.

Sometimes the galleries also have live music, and one is guaranteed to be able to enjoy live music during the June Art Walk!

Hours are 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Artwork consists mostly of paintings and drawings, but other forms are available (stained glass, pottery, photographs, etc.), and many of the works are of high quality.

I recommend starting and ending at Taylor Books, located at 226 Capitol Street, across the street from Ellen's Homemade Ice Cream. They have an art gallery on the left side of the store, and a coffee shop and restrooms on the right side. You should also be able to get a map that shows the locations of participating galleries from the check-out desk in the main bookstore.

A map isn't necessary, however. Participating galleries usually have a sign on the sidewalk, and you can always just follow the crowd!

You can also get more information on the Art Walk's website, http://charlestonartwalk.com/, or on Taylor Books' website, http://www.taylorbooks.com/annex_gallery.nxg.

Parking is available on the street (parking is metered until 6:00 PM), or in a park-for-a-fee parking lot located on the left side of Capitol Street, just a couple of doors before you reach Taylor Books. (Capitol Street runs one-way from the Kanawha River toward the hill located behind Charleston.)
