We stayed in the brand new hotel rooms inside the main lodge for 2 nights to attend the Navy Day Ball in their large conference room. The bed linens were so comfy, we felt like we were home. The decor was very stylish. The customer service from the maids to the desk clerk to security to the gift shop cashier went beyond our expectations. The buffet food was incredible! If you're coming from the south, try to either avoid Hwy 33 (very windy road) or drive in the day light. We took a different route home -- it was mostly straight freeway.

We were the first guests in the almost ready new rooms. Apparently this was a very dated and near should have been leveled resort... I stayed for a wedding and while the rooms weren't completely ready unless the post-it notes with our door numbers were part of their plan, I was super glad to be in the new rooms. The color scheme is modern with dark woods, burnt orange and neutrals. The rooms are bright and fresh. The stone work looks to be a nice touch for the future.

Unfortunately nothing else was ready, but I can assure you this was a complete overhaul of the facility, and I would be excited to return once completed. Beautiful mountain views and hiking trails at your doorstep.

I was on a bus trip with our senior tour group for a two night stay to see fall foliage and take two train rides into the mountains and was happy when we pulled in front of the lodge only to be told we would be staying in the lodges in back of the "good" lodge. The rooms were dirty, old, musty, moldy bathrooms and very dark. The coffeemaker even had a layer of dust on it. The parking lot from the place we had to go for breakfast and dinner were unlit and the pavement had potholes that were treacherous. The power to the whole building was from the parking lot with a generator, which went off in the middle of the night. The room was very dark because we were in the woods. It was off for several hours, which was very upsetting. The food was excellent but didn't make up for the lodging. We learned on our second day that our "old" lodge was being torn down the next week. And to add insult to injury, we paid the same price as the other White Star group. Someone really made hay off our misery. Wouldn't consider ever going here again!!!

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get booked in the Bates Motel with the fancy lobby

Please accept our most sincere of apologies. It is never our intention to disappoint our guests and we are so sorry that you did not feel the true hospitality of Canaan Valley. It is true, just as soon as the new lodge is fully complete, the former lodges will be razed.

We are so very sorry that we did not meet your expectations and understand your frustrations. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have to agree with Wordmobile.......this is a super "made-over" hotel. Yes, they were still banging and sawing, working like obsessed beavers to get ready for ski season. SO WHAT? The building crews were courteous and totally focused on their jobs. Meanwhile, the room we had was overlooking valleys and hills, beautifully decorated and appointed, with super comfy beds and sparkling clean bath. Skiers will be happy to see nicely designed in-room racks for their gear, and the closet is ample. Breakfast is a well-stocked buffet, with nothing missing that I could see. They even had oatmeal AND grits ---yea!---and hot stuff was shot and cold stuff was cold. Dinner was mediocre to me, but several of my companions found it just fine. The staff was really nice and helpful.
I hope they do tear down the old part; there were some people staying in it while we were there and they flat out hated it.
The indoor pool and jacuzzi were just right (on the small side) and the outdoor pool looked just fine, but it naturally wasn't open while were were there.

Yes, I had seen a lot of not-happy-camper reviews, so I was just going to tough it out traveling with a tour group for a two-night stay to ride several railroads in the area. This was late September '13 and while there were some final signs of construction, the rooms were spanking new in decor, sheets, shower curtains, carpet, etc. There was a smaller motel-like structure to the left which someone said was the "old" place to stay. It's still there, but I don't know if they book rooms in it. Make sure you know which unit you want.

The dinner and breakfast buffet were well above average, and the wait staff very accommodating. Drinks purchased separately and served by the staff. Martini (decent) for $5.83. Wow! The bar and lounge were nearby and seem to have a crowd in there. View from 2nd floor was to the valley and hills. Nice. It did have a tiny balcony that accommodated two chairs. And, windows you can open. AC was quite. Bathroom super clean.

They are a conference center, so the corridor to the bar and restaurant houses several conference rooms which seemed to be occupied. Also, notices golfers were staying at the hotel.

It's hilly country, but I got the feeling that we were on a high level plateau since getting there was on winding roads that sloped upward for most of the trip. Would think arriving after dark would require careful driving and a good map/instructions. Allow enough time to get there.

I visited Canaan Valley Resort recently, having fond memories of the place from a visit years ago. I read the recent Tripadvisor reviews, many scathing in their criticism of the construction of the new lodge and the condition of the 30+ year old motel-type rooms (heard they will be torn down). FYI, ONLY brand new rooms in two newly constructed guest wings on either side of the former lobby (completely renovated) will be available after construction is done at end of October...so complaints about the former rooms are moot. The resort is essentially brand new (check out my pics!). I was SO impressed with the beauty of the new guest rooms...high quality cotton & down bedding, high ceilings, large HD flatscreens, great cell phone reception, gorgeous fabrics and carpets, lots of stone and woodwork...and the same incredible views overlooking the valley with mountains all around (most rooms have balconies with seating!). No more exterior corridors, no more hiking to the next building...the lodge is self contained with all guest rooms, meeting rooms, the restaurant and lounge, indoor pool , exercise room, etc under one roof. Service was excellent, from the restaurant to the front desk, I was welcomed with a smile and treated courteously.

My favorite thing was the hiking trails, you can set off right from the hotel and be in a moss covered forest in minutes, with just the sound of birds in the trees or rushing water along a stream. Don't miss the short and easy hike called Blackwater River Trail (I think), it is less than a mile and the trail head is at the golf course parking lot. It was magical - a wild crabapple orchard attracts deer, who graze unafraid (it is a state park, no hunting allowed). The trail meanders along the river, home to ducks and there was a beaver dam. I happened to be there during the peak of fall color, the trees ablaze in orange, yellow and red. Canaan Valley is a very special place for nature lovers and can now be enjoyed while staying in luxury accommodations that reflect a very good value for the money.

Room Tip: Request a room with a balcony overlooking the valley, spectacular views!

As a member of a retiree's group, 50 of us stayed at this large resort just completing expansion and renovation, about an hour from Elkins. Beautiful location, beautiful modern furnishings, with golf course, indoor and outdoor pool, indoor hot tub and many meeting rooms of various sizes makes this the perfect location for a conference of intermediate size!
The dining room has a generous buffet for all meals, with fresh fruit, salad fixin's, wonderful pastries and desserts. The view is breathtaking, especially at breakfast with the mist shrouding trees and hills!
Various sized rooms and suites are found on each of four levels. We got to examine each type in a 'walk through' with our friends. Some suites have remote-controlled fireplaces and wet bars! Complete facility with all the amenities, the staff is friendly and helpful! Our group was impressed! Plenty of well-lit parking, an outdoor patio, and a large mezzanine with coffee service makes this a welcoming gathering place for vacationers and businesspersons.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on higher floors (3 or 4) for a fantastic view, especially mornings on the East side...
