“Lacking in basic comforts”

Stayed with my husband and two kids (ages 6 & 9) on Thurs/Fri night of Labor Day Weekend. Far drive on windy roads to the lodge. Few people upon our arrival on Thurs night and we were the only ones at the on site restaurant . The food was average and they had run out of hot dogs. Best available restaurant, CJ's, was located in Parsons about 30 minutes away. The rooms are dated and still using an actual "key" to enter room. Rooms are clean. Lots of staff sitting around behind front desk that area not helpful or forthcoming with information. No laundry facilities. Pool and hot tub are one of the better amenities. Did find helpful parks dept employees driving around. Falls and hiking trails are nice. Recommend this location for couples, but not families.

I would have rated the cabin excellent except for the few stains on the ceiling in the bathroom. Other than that the cabin was clean, included all linens and towels (no shampoo), pots, pans, saute pans, utensils, glasses and plates. If you do not want to cook at the cabin you can get dinner at the Lodge Restaurant. The fireplace was stocked with wood, that was nice to have on the cool evenings we had in August. The cabin was spacious, two bedrooms, eat in kitchen, full size refrigerator and oven. Be aware: No TV, but you can go to the Lodge for TV and internet at no charge. Very nice wooded setting. The cabins in the parks older section are spaced well apart to give you a secluded feeling. Picnic table and grill outside. Our deck on the back had seating, but not on the front porch. We really felt it was a homey comfortable place to stay.

If you want creature comforts like AC, TV and Wi-Fi ask for a newer cabin, but be aware those cabins are in cleared fields, and almost on top of each other.

Room Tip: There is a spa and indoor swimming pool at the Lodge. There are rooms at the Lodge, but I did not s...

We spent two nights at the lodge and found it to be very comfortable if a bit outdated. Rooms are small and without the standard amenities such as coffee maker, hair dryers, mini fridge or microwave. There is, however, wifi and a nice flat-screen tv in each room. That said, it was exactly what we expected to find in this somewhat isolated area--high in the Alleghenies. The scenery is spectacular and if you are a hiker you will not be able to cover all the trails that are available. Some are very challenging...some not so much. Food in the lodge was very good if a bit pricy for the area. Great breakfast and dinner buffets if you enjoy that sort of thing. Very clean and well-maintained with indoor pool, jacuzzi and exercise room. Many things within a short drive--Dolly Sods Wilderness area, Canaan Valley Resort, Seneca Rocks and, of course, Blackwater Falls which is worth every step down the mountain to see. Get a room with a view of the canyon...also worth the few extra dollars.

Room Tip: Check bed sizes carefully and pay the extra few dollars for a canyon side room.

Hotel needs updating. It was clean but out of date. Backwater falls is a nice site to see you can walk there on the trail. It's not for the handicap, because of the steps and rocks on the way. Dinning at the hotel was great.

But, other than that, it was a perfect place to stay. Restaurant with limited menu, but good, country, home cooking. Try the fried potatoes and gravy.
Spend the extra few dollars for a canyon view room with balcony. It is amazing! Plus, there is a pool, exercise room and hot tub. Take the time to walk to the falls, it is worth every step.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a canyon view room with balcony. It is worth the extra few dollars.

The Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge is located near the rim of the Blackwater Canyon. One side of the lodge faces the canyon and the other faces the parking lot. Always try to get a canyon side room unless you want to look at the parking lot. The canyon side gives a forest view with modern windmills in the distance. I will let you decide if this source of electricity is good for the view. The first thing you notice upon entering the room is that it is very small. The bathroom is small as well. This gives the room a dated look. The room and the entire lodge has been kept up well. It is clean and it looks like they try to do the best possible with what they have. The room does not have many of the amenities that we have gotten used to from roadside motels. No, mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot, hair dryer, iron or ironing board. There really isn't room for any of these extras. The room did have a large flat screen tv mounted on the wall which was a plus. I believe there are some larger suites. These book up early and I have never been able to reserve one. Many of the rooms have twin beds. When you make reservations, watch the type of bed closely. The lodge does have a great location. This is a big plus. There is limited accomodations in the Davis/Canaan Valley area. I believe this is the best place to stay in the area. However, Canaan Valley State Park/Resort is currently building a new lodge. I will probably be trying the new lodge when it opens.

Room Tip: Choose a canyon side room for a better view. Check bed types when making reservations, some rooms h...

Our visit to Blackwater Falls State Park was very good. The lodge was built, I believe, in the 1950's, and some parts of the lodge and its rooms are somewhat dated, but it is very well-cared-for, and by no means run down. The lodge rooms are pretty small (at least ours was), but I was impressed with the cleanliness of our room. The housekeeping staff did an excellent job - our room was spotless when we arrived, and they kept it clean and neat for the duration of our three-night stay. Our room was equipped with a large HD TV - larger than you usually see in most hotel rooms these days...BUT, there is so much to do in this area, I can't imagine wasting time sitting around in the room watching TV. I personally would have preferred a small refrigerator in the room in lieu of such a large TV (but TV addicts would probably disagree).

We had two breakfasts, a lunch, and a dinner at the lodge restaurant. Servers were friendly and gave us good service each time. The menu choices are the regular standards, nothing unique, but our food was good each time. It's a little pricey for what it is, but the area is very rural and remote, so you don't exactly have unlimited alternatives. The only other options in the immedate vicinity are little mom&pop places in the nearby towns of Thomas and Davis. The closest fast-food chains (McDonalds, Subway, etc) are about half an hour away in the town of Parsons, WV.

The lodge at Blackwater Falls is a good place to stay while exploring West Virginia's mountains. Not only is Blackwater Falls an excellent state park in its own right, it is located in an area where there is far more to do than one could ever accomplish in one or two trips. West Virginia has many bike trails - trails for mountain bikers, as well as rail trails for cyclists. There is a bike rack outside the front door of the lodge, but unfortunately, no place to store your bike inside. For hikers, you could spend months, if not years, on all of the hiking trails in the area. Not only are there hiking trails in Blackwater Falls State Park, but there are mile after mile of trails, for every skill level, in the nearby Monongahela National Forest, where you will find some national-park-quality views if you choose the right hikes. (There are many guidebooks, but I recommend Johnny Molloy's "Day & Overnight Hikes in West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest"). There are also some Civil War sites in this area of West Virginia, though they are of the more obscure, lesser-known variety. The names of the engagements may be familiar to the Civil War enthusiast, but they will probably not be familiar to the everyday tourist.

What you will not find in this very rural area, are big box stores, urban sprawl, and a clusters of everyday tourist jip joints. This area is a secluded, remote, outdoor lover's paradise. If you're looking for a stereotypical, touristy destination type experience with mile after mile of restaurants, night clubs, t-shirt shops, go-cart tracks, theme parks, and outlet malls, you'll be disappointed here.

Speaking of the rural nature of this area, one final word of advice. Before coming here, get yourself an old-fashioned West Virginia state road map - do NOT rely solely upon your GPS, or you will find yourself making some very long, tedious drives on some very tight, hilly roads (with little or no cell phone signal to call for help in the event of trouble). Even the main highways here are just two-lane roads, and the secondary roads are narrow, winding, and sometimes bumpy or pothole-ridden. ALL of the roads in this area are mountainous - i.e., very long and steep ascents and descents, with more horseshoe curves than you can count. Make sure your tires have adequate tread, and your brake pads aren't worn thin. To drive these roads on bald tires or worn-out brakes would be suicidal.

Room Tip: The view from the "Canyon-view" rooms is partially obstructed by the trees behind the lodg...
