“A cool visit”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

We live in metro DC and decided on a visit to the mountains to cool off. We were agreeably surprised by the Lodge and its facilities. We had booked a suite and the living room and balcony outside had beautiful views. Good walking at all levels, beautiful waterfalls. We only ventured out of the park once to a nearby brewery and otherwise had our meals at the Lodge restaurant. We found the staff there to be friendly and helpful and their long opening hours were much appreciated as we would come in from a walk at different times. Their baked apple pancake for breakfast was scrumptious. Overall we felt the meals were more than satisfactory. There are some areas which could use updating, but there appeared to be new carpets and covers on the furniture and there was a very comfortable lounge area. Piping hot water in the bathroom and shower. The pool and hottub were lifesavers for aching limbs. Hope to return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the canyon side for the best views.

Didn't stay overnight but ate at the lodge
And the food was worth going back again
The staff was great the views were great
And also got rained on , that even felt great . And yes I would do it all again

A nice park with waterfall scenery and hiking trails. Not many local choices for lodging. This is a dated lodge with little soundproofing, but it is clean and in an excellent location. Beware of the restaurant- the reviews are correct about the HORRIBLE service. I would consider another stay at the lodge, but I will not visit the restaurant again.

A week in a cabin at Blackwater Falls is worth two weeks in a lot of other places. The two-bedroom cabin we rented had a well-equipped kitchen, a real plus for folks who like to cook. The fireplace, with wood supplied, was a treat on rainy days in the mountains. The whole place was clean, with good linens for bed and bath. Porches on front and back provided nice places to sit, and there's even an outdoor barbecue available. We couldn't help but contrast this cabin with one we rented not so long ago at Yosemite -- Blackwater Falls wins hands down for cleanliness, spaciousness and supplies. Looks like West Virginia can show California a thing or two.

Room Tip: We recommend cabins 1-26, especially the ones on the uphill side of the road.

We have stayed here before and knew what the place offered. It's clean, well cared for, but could use some updating. The rooms have large flat screens, but most everything else is older. Terrific views, ample parking, pool, and the staff was friendly. The restaurant is satisfactory, but nothing special.

At most hotels you are greeted. The front desk staff seemed annoyed that I had interrupted their conversation. They were not particularly helpful.

After staying at the newly renovated Canaan Valley Lodge, we had decided to stay in the more rustic Lodge at Blackwater this trip for a more homey experience. That was not going to be satisfied but the room was fine and the view terrific. At least after we asked to switch us to the other side of the building. Most rooms and the restaurant seemed to have few guests. Perhaps they have business rules to assign people to the parking lot view first. You will want to ask for a valley view.

The facilities were actually okay but tired and some great trails started near the Lodge. The pool was locked and the hot tub jets did not work. I had asked a staff member how to get to the pool and she did not volunteer that I would have to go to the main desk to get a key. Her directions sent me straight into some active meeting from a room she had just left. I learned there was an unobtrusive entry just beside it. She seemed not to care.

When I returned to the desk to ask for the key, the desk clerk did not seem interested but did warn me that the hot tub jets did not work. That is getting ahead of myself though. When I first followed the direction of the young woman, I arrived at the pool entrance and there was no sign on the door telling you you needed a key to gain access and I had waited there 15 minutes for an attendant to return. None ever came.

The pool did have fresh towels and clean space as well as a pleasant view.

The meal experience was varied. The dining room is large with many windows. First breakfast was poor. The wait staff seemed preoccupied. The potatoes were extremely salty. The omelette was dark from burning but tasted okay. The toast was forgotten but that was not a major offense. The senior menu items I looked at seemed the same price as the regular menu and she could not explain what was different.

The last day of the stay with a different waitress was very different. She was attentive and friendly. The omelette was terrific. She gave suggestions that were appreciated. The potatoes were not drenched in salt and this time there was butter with the toasts.

At least on 3 occasions I heard staff saying how guest requests were causing them extra work. Comments included "they will just have to wait" and "I can't wait to leave." I witnessed an argument between the hostess and a waitress because the hostess had seated a couple where they had asked to set instead of in her domain.

There seems to be a lack of hospitality and perhaps leadership.

This place could use some updating, but that was part of the charm. Our room was very small--had a queen and twin bed and not much room to move around. It was dated but clean. We were right next to the stairs and overlooking the parking lot, so I was concerned about noise, but it ended up not being an issue. Staff was generally friendly. We enjoyed playing pinball and ping pong in the game room. Loved the big room where you could just hang out and play games, watch TV or just chat. It's also nice to walk from the hotel right down to the gorge overlook. The pool was small but nice.
