“Amazing Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

This place was beautiful. It was a little rough getting up into Dolly Sods. The road was washed out in some places and major pot holes but we made it up into Dolly Sods. Beautiful views from everywhere off the Road. Plenty of places to pull over to view the area. Be prepared for the people that love the outdoors but love to speed out of the area which can be difficult due to lack of area to pull over in spots! Spent a few hours in this area. Can't wait to go back.

“Been hiking and backpacking here since the 1970s”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014 via mobile

I never tire of visiting Dolly Sods. I have backpacked all over the country and am glad Dolly Sods is in my home state.

No visit would be complete without walking out the ridge at Bear Rocks. It is an east short hike to get a flavor of Dolly Sods if you only have a short time to visit.

A 6 mile round trip on Blackbird Knob trail will take you down to the forks of Red Creek. Bushwhack a little over a 1/4 mile down the creek to an area called the slide. Another favorite of mine.

There are also numerous possibilities for hiking off trail for those who are more adventurous.

“A variety of wonderful scenery”

High meadows, mountain streams, panoramic views - they are all in Dolly Sods. But have a good map and be prepared for mud bogs on some of the trails.

“A Unique Spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014

Dolly Sods has no trees because it was deforested thru logging; then the humus caught on fire, leaving little soil to cover the ground. As a result, it is quite open, with only small trees, rocks and lots of blueberries in late summer, which brings bears.
It is a great place for star gazing, but there is little shade, so it can get warm in the summer. It is really worth going out of your way to see.
