I'd like to offer two ratings -- one for the rafting experience itself and one for the guides.
First, the rafting. The biggest disappointment is that it was a lesser experience then i expected from the description on the web site and the brochure -- but that's not a knock on Cantrell specifically, all rafting providers in the area do that. Yes, we were at the "low water" time; still i expected more. Even though there are 16 rapids to go through, only 3 or 4 elicited any kind of excitement -- and there are significant stretches of calm water in between. Second, I was told on the phone that the half day trip covers about 2/3 of the distance that the full day trip covers -- NOT TRUE. the difference is that they cover the same distance but half day takes 2 hours, and full day is 4-4.5. The difference is that the pace is more leasurely (you don't have to paddle all the time) and you have an opportunity to swim (the water was amazingly warm), have a repeat run ( or two ) through one rapid and stop for lunch on a "full day trip". And we were back at the base by 2 pm. The lunch was surprisingly good, with a lot of options, and most of it healthy optiuons, too. So the rafting component gets a 3.5
Our guides were Randy and Chops. They made the trip very fun and fulfilling. The safety instructions at the beginning were comprehensive and to the point; Randy expertly led us through all the difficult patches and made it easy -- since he sits in the back, you don't realize how much work a guide does until you look at the sequence of pictures of going through a higher category rapid. The service was very personal, with a lot of attention to the kids. Randy kept the trip entertaining with a lot of stories about past experiences and the river -- without being overwhelming or detracting from the surroundings. The giudes get a 4.5 -- the only reason for knocking it down a bit is that both guides smoked almost non-stop. Even outside, it bothered me a bit.
Overall, the scenery was amazing, the trip fun, the service great. I give it a 4 for the reasons above.

We just got back from WV this afternoon--what a phenomenal trip. Our guide Tim was incredibly skillful in guiding a crew that included a complete novice; Jen, Chops, Mike, Nancy, and everyone else added to the experience. His knowledge of the river, its history, and the area are encyclopedic (and very interesting). Our full-day New River trip on August 1st included a fabulous lunch, swimmer's rapids, and jumping from an 18-foot high rock into the river (my sons thoroughly enjoyed this feature). The trip had an "unrushed" feel without taking away from the excitement of riding the rapids. Cantrell's is a family-owned business which allows them to give very personal service,to have staff with many years of experience, and to provide a more thorough trip than one of the larger, corporate rafting companies. We definitely will go back again and stay in the cabins (we didn't this trip, but should have, but that is another review entirely.....)

Randy was awesome, best guide I have ever had on a rafting trip. Been on white water in TN MT and WA. The lower new is a great entry level trip. My family had a wonderful time thanks to Randy. He knows the river well and made sure we had a great time. This company does well because of employees like this one.

Took a Lower New River half day trip with Randy and had a blast! This was my fourth time on the river and have to say the people at Cantrell far exceeded my expectations. Randy really knew what he was doing how to make sure we were having a great time. Cantrell is a smaller company which gives it a personal touch and a lot more flexibility when comes to meeting your individual needs. Also, they had the best prices I could find on the river with the most experienced guides. I would definitely recommend anyone to give them a call if you're looking to go rafting in the New or Gauley rivers.
