“Nice drive”

Highland Scenic Highway
Reviewed 14 July 2014

There was very little traffic, so we could go as slowly as we wanted to, to admire the beautiful scenery. Plenty of places to pull over. Lots of marked trails to hike.

The Scenic Highway is a spectacular bicycle ride. The road is in good condition (no trucks or snowplows) and the views wonderful. A rewarding ride both ways. Start at the Visitors center and ride as far as you want then turn around and head back for another set of views.

Because my town, Richwood WV, sits at the edge of the Monongahela National Forest, it is surrounded by natural beauty. A drive along Route 39 through the forest offers numerous natural attractions suitable for hiking, camping, fishing, picture taking as well as painting, and just stretch-your-legs adventuring. Well-marked forest trails, lake and riverside camp sites, deep water and fly fishing opportunities, along with waterfalls, Canadian-type bogs, and a scenic highway (Route 150) which cuts across mountain tops and ridges like a two-lane expressway are there for enjoyment. Offering assistance along the way are the Gauley Ranger Station and the Cranberry Mountain Nature. Center. All in all, these wonders lie along a 43-mile byway. Of course, seasonal restrictions apply, so it is always wise to check with 1-800-CALL-WVA in late fall and winter.
