“Lovely peaceful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2013

We have just returned from our stay at the old rectory and found it to be a very pleasant hotel. The staff and owner were friendly and helpful our room was was comfortable with a lovely bathroom. We stayed in the old barn annexe and could only just hear the trains mentioned by another reviewer, and they seemed to stop before I needed to go to sleep anyway. Unfortunately it was not warm enough to try out the swimming pool which was a shame. The food was excellent I particularly enjoyed my breakfast bacon sandwich. We had dinner on one night of our stay and this was also very good especially the crab starter.
Our only disappointment was that we only met one of the two Birman cats !!

We decided to stay at the Old Rectory based on the reviews from trip advisor and yet again we weren't let down. The hotel was very pretty and has a host of original features but doesn't feel dated - its comfortable and relaxing but the absolute best bit is the food ( although the very very friendly staff come a close second). The breakfasts are excellent and to be highly recommended but please please try the food at night it's wonderful. The chief is truely talented and his puddings MUST NOT BE MISSED! As someone who is a bit of a dessertaholic the ones I had here were well up on my list of all time favourites and if you find a semolina cake on the menu- TRY IT. I hated semolina at school and therefore didn't order the cake but my husband did and when I tried his pudding I realised what a mistake I'd made - it was feather light yet buttery and packed with flavour. If you're need a base in Norwich we can't recommend this highly enough!

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the pretty front Garden and if you struggle with stairs don't book the...

We stayed four nights at The Old Rectory in room 2. It's a beautiful Georgian building dating to 1754 with nice grounds, a garden area, a restaurant, and a pool. The drawing room is comfortable with a selection of books.

However, what ISN'T mentioned anywhere is that there is a railroad track right across the street and a commuter train runs every five to ten minutes.

If traffic noises don't bother you, then this is the place for you. The staff is helpful and polite. The breakfasts are to order and very nice.

But, the clackety-clack of the trains drove me nuts quickly. To avoid the noise, the double paned windows had to be closed, which meant that the room got hot. We asked for and got a large floor fan which helped some, but every night was too hot for me.

Our room was large enough with space for a computer, but the large bathroom has no counter space to put things that one needs in the bathroom. There is a tiny glass shelf under the basin and that's all.

I had picked this hotel over many others, but regretted it from the start due to the railroad track and incessant trains.

We have regularly visited North Norfolk and Norwich area for the last seventeen years. We have always, until recently, chosen to stay at the Norfolk Mead Hotel where we enjoyed the excellent hospitality and comfort provided by its previous owners Don and Jill Fleming. However, our experience with the new owner when we attempted to book a stay earlier this year was decidedly negative, an impression which was not improved by our receipt of a couple of petulant e-mails from the owner after we contacted him three times to book. We decided instead to stay at The Old Rectory on the outskirts of Norwich. Booking was simple and straight-forward. All the staff greeted us with a smile and we felt that they were genuinely interested in making our stay enjoyable. Chris and Sally the owners was most welcoming and friendly, and was happy to engage and chat to us. We thoroughly enjoyed the food served in the restaurant and thought the local produce excellent, particularly the locally made cheeses and English wine. We booked a comfortable en- suite room with a pretty balcony which faced front, and we enjoyed sitting there in the warm evenings with a glass of wine. The Old Rectory sits in its own grounds, set back a distance from the road and well screened by conifers. Our only negative comment would be that it was a little noisy with road traffic when sitting on the balcony or with windows open, but it was the first weekend of school summer holidays and a warm start to the August holiday season which may have increased the volume of traffic in the area. In any case, it didn’t spoil our enjoyment of our stay. We were fortunate to have booked across a very warm weekend so we were able to enjoy using the outdoor pool for refreshing dips when it got too hot. The Old Rectory had a warm and happy atmosphere and we very much enjoyed our first stay. We have already booked for next Easter.

I stayed in Room 1 for only one night (had to cut my trip short) as it was SO comfortable. I had been concerned about the proximity of the road and the railway line, but can honestly say I didn't hear a thing throughout the night. Breakfast was very good, and I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Room 1 was simply lovely with it's own balcony overlooking the gardens. The bed would have been...

We stayed for 1 night arriving Saturday 3rd August 2013. We stayed in rooms 1 & 2 and could not fault anything. Our rooms were excellent, we even had a fantastic balcony overlooking the gardens. What a lovely place to stay. Chris and Sally have created the most wonderful place, we just wished we could have stayed longer. The pool was a real bonus, the sun was shining so we were able to make full use of the terrace. We had friends joining us for dinner, the meal was fantastic. The staff could not have been more attentive, they have thought of everything. Breakfast was equally as good as dinner with everything locally sourced. They accommodated our daughter very well by providing a meal that was not on the menu, she loved it. Overall a great place to stay, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed for 2 nights in a large comfortable room (1) and would highly recommend this hotel. This is a warm and inviting hotel run by a couple who make you feel very welcome. The standard of food is excellent, with the use of well prepared local ingrediants coupled with a well considered selection of wines. An excellent base for visiting this part of Norfolk.
