“Fine dinning in Baleys Harbor”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Great choice for dinner in Baileys Harbor.

Nice ambiance and interior with beautiful harbor views.

Fresh modern menu that was well explained by our server Maria who was friendly and knowledgeable .

It's not cheap but well worth the price.

We will be back!

“Excellently prepared food, Clever menu”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Chives Resturaunt opened this year in Baileys Harbor in the location of a former restaurant (Saveur) which closed two years ago. The dining room is comfortable, albeit small, and affords an excellent view of Lake Michigan and the activity in Baileys Harbor. There is a bar area and a very small outdoor seating area. I live in town and have eaten here several times. The first thing that catches your attention is the small menu. It is arranged in three categories, Small Plates, Medium Plates, and Large Plates. As you can imagine, the cost of the "plates" increases with size. The small plates can be thought of as starters or tapas, but they can also serve as a meal with a couple in combination. The medium and large plates represent enough food for most appetites. They also have daily chef's specials and changing soup choices. I went there for a late lunch and enjoyed a BLT. Now this was not your ordinary BLT. The bread was excellent, the bacon thick and smokey, the vegetables fresh and there was a slice of avocado. My wife has had the crab cakes a couple of times and loves them. Last time I had the lamb mixed grill which was a special. The lamb chop was prepared very well (not over-cooked), the green beans were crisp and it was served with slices of an excellent, mild homemade sausage. I would have that again.

The prices at Chives are about average for a nice restaurant in Door County, a popular tourist area. The large plates can be expensive but for the most part, without drinks, you can get a good meal for a reasonable price. Their drink prices are pretty high, so you might want to have that extra cocktail at home. Our bill for the two of us, including several drinks, was about $90. The portions here are reasonably sized, but if you expect huge amounts of food so you can have enough to take home for the next several days, this is not the place for you.

One hint I would provide is that the front entrance of the restaurant, facing the lake, requires you to park on the street and climb a rather steep, short set of stairs. However, you can also park in the back of the building (off Ward Street) which affords easy access to the rear entrance with no steps.

Overall this is an excellent addition to the other nice restaurants in Baileys Harbor. I recommend Chives and will be dining there again myself.

“Sneaky Good”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This restaurant location in quaint, picturesque Baileys Harbor on Wisconsin's Door Peninsula has had three different iterations over the past ten years and Chive is, by far, the best restaurant to occupy the space. It is an offshoot or a restaurant of the same name in Green Bay. The menu is unusual and appealing, consisting of three sections, "small plates", medium plates", and "large plates". Each is priced appropriately with dishes ranging from under $10 for salads and appetizers to over $30 for large, full dinners. But don't be fooled by the terminology. I had a great italian sausage risotto last week that was billed as a "medium plate" and priced at $20 that was quite a substantial serving and my wife had steamed mussels and home-made (delicious!) fries, priced at $18 and the portion was HUGE, plenty for two hearty eaters. The wine list is good and the servers friendly and experienced. The bartender is great and the drinks are delicious. The restaurant opened with little fanfare and snuck up on the tourists and residents, delivering a a great dining experience. It's well worth a try.

“Terrific food, nice atmosphere”
Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

My friend and I split the chicken and goat cheese wontons (which came with a delicious apricot and Sriracha sauce) as a starter. I had the salmon cakes as my entree. They were tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, and a large portion (from the "Medium Plates" section of the menu). My friend's mushroom risotto topped with arugula was excellent as well. Try the raspberry iced tea if you're looking for a refreshing beverage!

“A Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 21 July 2014 via mobile

Chives is one of the best meals we have had in months. Their menu is set up as Small, Medium and Large plates. The small plate portions are large enough to share. Things to try...goat cheese and chicken wontons, crab cakes, mussels, any of their seafood although we did not have the beef filet it looked great.
