“Stout Island Lodge - Memories of Days Gone By”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

We lived in Menomonie, WI for over 20 years - home of the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Yes - the same Stout that built this lodge. When It opened to the public several years ago - it went on our list of places to go.

This past August - we had our family reunion on the island. My wife and I stayed in the original lodge - it's somewhat dated - but that is part of the charm.

The breakfasts were just ok. We ate dinner on the island one night and it was a pleasant dining experience.

Room Tip: Not all rooms are air conditioned. If staying during extremely hot weather - that is something to c...

Every once in a while I come across a place so special that I am torn between telling everyone how amazing it is and hoping to keep it my own little secret so that it will never change. I recently spent a weekend at Stout's Island Lodge and now find myself faced with that very dilemma.

At the last minute my boyfriend and I decided to go away for the weekend. He had heard about this place from a friend and decided to surprise me. It was supposed to be a rainy weekend, but between the 5 kids, 3 dogs and our busy jobs even a rainy weekend away on an island sounded enticing. We were not disappointed and in fact, left this magical place counting the days until we could return. I think it will be this weekend, if they have availability....

From the moment we stepped on the pontoon, we could tell this was something special. We were easily checked in and met the 2 other couples that would be sharing our cabin. We were quickly escorted to our comfortable accommodations and our luggage was soon to follow. I loved the fact that there were no keys to the rooms. The lack of formalities (check in, keys, etc) made it feel as though it was our own place, rather than a sterile hotel environment. The staff was virtually non-existent except for when you needed something and then they magically appeared.

The room was cozy and comfortable. Not fancy, but just right for us. We spent our time exploring the many paths of the island, admiring the gardens, reading by the fire, playing a competitive game of ping pong and sitting in the Adirondack chairs, watching the fish jump and admiring the brilliant fall colors. The restaurant was impressive, both aesthetically and gastronomically. We shared a wonderful meal and a bottle of wine. The bill was less than $100, which seemed very reasonable. Each night there was a roaring bonfire and we enjoyed chatting with the other guest. The complimentary breakfast was quite good and very substantial.

If you are looking for a quiet, romantic escape from the real world and appreciate a little rustic elegance, this is the place for you. For those desiring a more active vacation, complete with nightlife, you will be bored and I think there are places that would be a better fit. Stout's Island Lodge is a very special place and we can't wait to return.

My husband and I went at the end of September for our anniversary, and we had the perfect time. Since we went during the week, and school is back in session, this is their slower time. I think there were only 10 other guests on the island, and so it was very, very quiet and peaceful. We rarely saw anyone except when we went to the lodge for dinner. Prepare yourself to spend a little bit on meals there, but the food is excellent! Everything we tried, we loved.

Everyone was extremely friendly, very helpful. The rooms were immaculate and very cozy. This is the perfect place to go for a quiet, romantic getaway. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: We stayed in Wilson 1. We had our own private balcony, gas fireplace, steam shower, and an extremel...

A place that will force you to relax, Once dropped off time will stop. We stayed in a cabin on the furthest part of the island. The rooms were updated and very comfortable. There is no TV and very limited access to cell phone coverage. The lodge over the boat house provides a game room and TV - if that's what you are looking for, The hiking paths are beautiful and will lead you to beautiful corners of the island. I chatted with a woman who works in the gardens, very friendly and passionate, You will notice this as the flowers and gardens are very well maintained.

We ate dinner at the restaurant, highly recommend the trout. The price is steep but the food was fabulous.

There are cabins that have a small kitchen suite, I would bring some snacks next time I visit the island.

The fire pit is lit every night and small lights will lead you back on the path to your room/hotel. I didn't want to leave. Highly recommend for those needing to relax or couples !

Room Tip: photos on their website are very accurate. Clara's cabin is very quiet

My son married his beautiful bride this past weekend at Stout's Island Lodge. Everything was absolutely perfect. The day before the wedding we enjoyed swimming, canoeing, the waterbikes, hiking on the trails and relaxing outside our cabins. The cabins were very clean. The ceremony on the lawn facing the water was breathtaking as a pair of bald eagles flew above us. The dinner was 5 star at minimum. Hats off to the chef and the staff who served us. The evening ended sitting by the campfire eating smores. We definitely will return to the island for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Dear Brenda,

Thank you so much for your kind words! You were all a God-send to work with--just absolutely fabulous people. We hope that you come back every week (even though this is probably not realistic, but wouldn't it be great?)! We are so happy that your daughter and son-in-law had the wedding they were looking for and everything went according to plan.

Thanks again and hope to see you soon!

Stouts Lodge on the Island of Happy Days is a special place. This is not a 5 star hotel and I really don't think that the management has any intention of it being such. This is a historic lodge and it is rustic. Things haven't changed in years and because it is historic it probably shoulded. I agree with othe reviewers that this past year the effort from the staff has improved. On our most recent visit -- the staff were excellent and there seemed to be less students manning the fort, so to speak. The breakfast is good and varied -- could make more effort here, as this would really improve ratings. The other meals are good but variety of course is lacking. However many of the cabins/rooms have kitchens and you are allowed to bring all your food and drink - -this is huge for a family.

Room Tip: Look at all the options -they are varied.
