“It Doesn't Get Any Better...”
Reviewed 27 May 2013

We usually take the 2 1/2 hr. trip just to dine at the Rookery. This time, we decided to stay over for a couple of nights. The lodge was so clean, comfortable and quiet. We listened to the sounds of the forest as we relaxed in our room. This is truly a destination for those who are seeking a northern Wisconsin getaway that also includes fine dining, (which is not usually found anywhere else in this part of the state).
The Rookery, located below the lodge, is superb. I highly recommend ordering the rookery salad as a part of your dining experience. The micro greens are locally sourced and incredibly fresh, no matter what time of year. We always order a bottle of wine from their thoughtfully chosen wine list. This time we did not share an appetizer, but we have in the past, and have never been disappointed. The entrees are beautifully presented, and as always, unique and outstanding. The only thing missing from this visit was the owner's lovable black lab named Callie. She used to greet us at each visit. Sadly, she recently passed away, leaving behind a lot of broken hearts.
If you need to unwind, celebrate, or partake of the many outdoor activities, Cable Nature Lodge is a great choice.

We stayed for two nights in November. Unfortunately it was the only two nights of the week when the lodge's restaurant, the Rookery, was closed. Not only did the menu for this restaurant look delicious but all the locals said great things about it.

Our room, "White Pine" was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. This being midweek and off season, we were the only guests so it was very quiet. The room was equipped with a coffee machine (and coffee packets), a small fridge, a microwave, plates, glasses and cutlery. We bought fruit and other things in town to eat a light breakfast in the room. The bathroom lacked a tub (no problem for us) but the shower had tons of hot water.

The lodge is located within a mile of trailheads for hiking, X-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. There is no lake frontage and, as we weren't there for water activities, we didn't investigate public water access--although I saw lots of signs along the road indicating canoe landings.

The owner was extremely cordial and anxious to make our stay a pleasant one.

This place is really special. Located just 7 miles east of Cable, WI on hwy 7, near to the Telemark Ski area and just about a half hour north of Heyward, WI - home of the Birkibiner ski race. I have no problem recommending this place for both the wonderful rooms and the awesome food. The Rookery at the Cable Nature Lodge has such a complete menu for fine dining...I had the seared scallops appetizer, the chicken wild rice soup and the Rookery salad, which was full of beautiful and perfect size green beans, baby portabella mushrooms, and lots of other mixed veggies on a bed of micro greens...very fresh. Friends had the Buffalo Chili and said it was incredible - there was so much on the menu that will be tried in the future - lots to choose from for vegetarians and meat lovers alike! The dining room is filled with gorgeous wildlife photography and the lighting really brings a person into the magic space of the North Woods. Our bed was super comfortable, nice linens, very clean room of knotty pine and high ceilings and windows looking into the woods...with all the perks - coffee maker and good coffee, small refrigerator, lovely bathroom...BIG! Bill, the owner and host was super kind and took care of all our needs - hiking trail tour guide and a great bartender too! You can tell that a lot of care has been taken to make the Lodge what it is. Probably a great place to stay for any reason!

It's taken me a long time to write, but better late than never. Came up to our cabin for New Year's weekend to do some snowshoeing. Arrived to a very cold cabin with no heat. Didn't take long to figure out we had frozen pipes. Took longer to admit we had to stay somewhere else. We'd eaten at the Rookery many times and we had reservations for dinner so we took a chance. When being greeted as we walked through the door we asked if a room was available and we were thrilled to learn there was one left. We stayed two nights while the pipes & cabin were thawed out & enjoyed it so much we stayed a third night even though our cabin was now warm enough to stay in.
We would (and have) recommend this place to anyone interested in staying in the area. There is so much to do year round and this is a quiet, comfortable place to stay. The room was clean and tastefully decorated and we even had cable and wi fi. Not really roughing it. The view out our window as the snow fell on the pine trees was also a special treat. If we ever sell the cabin, this will be our place to stay when we come up north.

Room Tip: Camp Cable is the best room!

Pros: The lodge was quiet and comfortable. Located in a scenic area.
Cons: There was very shotty housekeeping services. We stayed 5 nights and only had someone come in once to make bed and give new cups. We did not receive fresh towels or washcloths (I'm ok with using the same towel, NOT the same washcloth). We were the only people staying at this place; even the workers leave after the restaurant closes. The restaurant is overpriced and not that good either. The waitress forgot about us and we waited near 20 minutes just to order. I had mushroom risotto - it was way too salty and not worth $20. Tasted like uncle Bens. Overall I think that at this price point- both for our stay and at the restaurant, we were ripped off.

We're never happy when one of our guests is dissatisfied with their stay at Cable Nature Lodge. Fortunately it doesn't happen often. And with a typical guest stay of just 1-2 days it's usually too late by the time we become aware of any problems to address them in the manner we aspire to. However, in this case it's a bit puzzling why guests staying five full days wouldn't make their unhappiness known sometime prior to their departure. We are a small (7 room) and quite informal lodging establishment. Several times our housekeeper approached their room, thought he heard voices, and elected not to disturb them. Most of our guests seem to appreciate this courtesy. And when guests do want something like extra towels they are always welcome to come downstairs to the bar and restaurant, where someone is available every evening in the summer and happy to assist them. Perhaps these guest are simply more accustomed to very large hotels with 24 hour maid and front desk service. I'm not sure how else to interpret their comment that "even the workers leave after the restaurant closes." What did they expect exactly? As for their review of our restaurant, again we are never happy with such displeasure. Perhaps we had an unusual off night. All I know is that our restaurant recently was awarded a 2011 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for our overall average rating of more than 4.8 on a 5 point scale. At least there is one positive thing about this review from our perspective. These guests stated they were the only ones staying at the lodge. In actuality 3-4 of our 7 guest rooms were occupied every night of their visit, thereby affirming their statement that "the lodge was quiet and comfortable."

I made my first journey up to Cable this month, and stayed overnite at the Cable Nature Lodge, as my reservation was made for me. Even though it was not on lakeshore, it was a most delightful visit, which gave me a true flavor of the area. Exceptionally friendly people inhabit Cable Wi. with some of the best food to be had at the Cable Nature Lodge for true gourmet dining at reasonable cost. My dinner was one of the best I have had in weeks, and I went home telling friends about the fine homemade pasta that melted in your mouth, not to mention the orange and lemon zest shrimp in pineapple butter sauce no less..mmmmmm i wish I had some now... Dont miss this establishment if you in Norther Wisconsin, as you can sit at the bar and make friends in 5 minutes. a fun and great experience.

Not a bad place to stay. Doing construction now for a new pub onsite so lots of construction debris laying around the property. The owner is nice, he has a friendly dog, and the room we stayed in ($99+ tax) was clean and confortable. Good: location to the ski trails, near plenty of dinner dining choices, friendly owner, nice bed. Less good: poor site with limited tree cover (not very nature-like) and lots of construction debris. Also the walls have NO insulation so we were up one of the two nights because of loud snoring in the next room! The walls of our room shook when the whirlpool in another room was turned on.

The construction noted in this review was completed several months later and the resulting pub and restaurant has greatly added to the guest experience as planned (see Rookery Pub & Cafe reviews in the Trip Advisor "Cable restaurants" section).

It does seem a little unfair to place such an emphasis in the review on some unavoidable construction debris outside the building which had only temporary visual impacts. But I am even more baffled by the comment that our site has limited tree cover and is not very nature-like. With the exception of a gravel parking area and adjacent wetlands, trees surround the lodge and can be viewed from every guest room. A travel writer who recently visited our property expressed similar bewilderment after reading this review.

Regarding hearing snoring in an adjacent room I have to agree that despite our best attempts to insulate the walls (two layers of soundboard sandwiched between two layers of sheet rock) it turns out that exceptionally loud sounds can occasionally be heard between certain rooms. Similarly, the vibration from one air jet tub can be sensed in the common wall shared by this particular guest room (although saying the walls "shook" is a bit of an hyperbole).
