We visit Chippewa Falls several times a summer and decided to try the James Sheeley House for a special dinner based on the reviews for its atmosphere, good food and especially the cashew crusted walleye. We arrived around 7pm and found the restaurant almost empty. That should have been our first clue that something was amiss. Our waitress was friendly, although young and inexperienced. When asked about the walleye, she said she had never tried it, but people said it was good. Dinners are served with a warm dinner roll, choice of soup or salad, potato and vegetable. The french onion soup was tasty and the salad was wonderful with a garlic basalmic vinaigrette dressing. The menu describes the walleye as pan fried with crushed cashews and panko breadcrumbs and an amaretto glaze. At $21.00, (twice the price of the broiled or fried cod fish fry), we were looking forward to something really tasty. When the entrees arrived, the walleye was a slab of white fish with cashew halves sprinkled on top. There was no evidence of breading, and the fish was soggy with a sickly sweet flavor. When the waitress came back to ask how we liked the meal, we told her of the disappointment with the walleye. She apologized and told us she would talk to the manager. When she returned, she said the manager had said that was how the entree was supposed to be; there was nothing to be done about it. Not satisfied, my husband asked to speak to the manager directly. When he came out, he was quite defensive and stated that people "love" this dish...and that the amaretto glaze gives the fish a sweet flavor. When I asked about why the fish differed so from the menu description, he said he had to get back to the kitchen and would refund the price of the entree. Our conclusion was that either the regular chef had quit or at a minimum was on vacation. The fact that the dining room was almost empty on a mid-summer Friday night suggests that the restaurant has some ongoing issues. Needless to say, given that and the almost rude attitude of the manager, we will not be back.
